A Mixed-Method Analysis Of The News Media Framing Of Gender Non-Conforming Victims Of Homicide In The U.S. From 2012-2022., Susana Avalos, Hayley Jackey, Iyan Wickel

Graduate Student Government Association Research Conference

Recent analyses of transgender homicide victims find that the news media often uses improper terminology, delegitimizes, and victim blames them. These analyses, while insightful, are limited as they have largely analyzed cases involving trans women and trans feminine individuals. The present study employs a mixed method approach to analyze news media articles (N=88) published in U.S. online news media outlets about 17 gender non-conforming victims killed between 2012 and 2022. We found that most articles did not delegitimize or victim-blame. However, we find 1) victim blaming occurred when reporting on cases of officer-involved shootings, 2) certain victims receive more coverage …

Airport Electrification: Funding, Microgrids, And Sustainability, Irene A. Miller, Amy Rutledge Jan 2025

Airport Electrification: Funding, Microgrids, And Sustainability, Irene A. Miller, Amy Rutledge

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The demand for air travel is increasing, and although the aviation industry only accounts for 2% to 3% of global emissions, it is a challenging industry to decarbonize (Ritchie, 2023). To assist with decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, US airports are transitioning to electric vehicles and electricpowered ground support equipment to reduce the environmental impact on the communities they serve. The Federal Aviation Administration provides grant incentives for airports to purchase zero-emissions vehicles, with the intention to reduce pollution in the communities they serve. Currently, many airports do not have the power generation capability or electrical infrastructure required to support the …

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

In developing countries in Africa and Asia, meeting challenges of water scarcity and pollution has often been hampered by shortcomings in higher education, including insufficient research productivity and funding, lack of opportunity for university graduates, and a mismatch between university activities and societal needs. To address these issues, we developed novel programs integrating technical instruction and preparation for professional practice in hydrology for cohorts of graduate students from Morocco and Egypt (2012–2013) and from Türkiye and Indonesia (2013–2014). Students participated in an initial online course and a follow-up workshop featuring geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and hydrologic modeling with …

Aligning Audience Needs With Scientists’ Information In The Complex Harmful Algal Bloom Outreach To Engagement Continuum, Erica Clites, Heather Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Algae, an important foundation of aquatic ecosystems, can become a nuisance or harmful when it grows in excess. Many government agencies have a role in monitoring, responding to, and confirming a harmful algal bloom (HAB). HAB scientists have important information to share, however, given the complexities of HABs, which often involve decoupled drivers from observed impacts, presents challenges to outreach and engagement. Understanding key audience information needs can help scientists prioritize key science communication and engagement opportunities to maximize the impact of such efforts. Scientists may need additional science communication training or support for scientist-community partnerships. This will be evermore …

Making Science-Inquiry Learning Accessible For Students With Complex Support Needs, Sarah Koebley, Shawnee Wakeman, Lindsay Ruhter, David Pugalee, Meagan Karvonen

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Inquiry learning through engagement with scientific practices has proven to be an effective instructional practice for general education students. Although students with complex support needs (CSN) are required to have access to the same grade-appropriate academic content in science as their peers without CSN, it remains a challenge for special education teachers to design instruction around student inquiry and science conceptual understanding. The 5E Science Education for Special Educators (5E-SESE) Model combines three well-established conceptual constructs (three-dimensional science standards, Universal Design for Learning [UDL], and the 5E Model) to support special educators in delivering quality science instruction. With the 5E …

What's Their Story? To Help Save The Humanities, Let's Listen To English Majors, Kevin T. Caffrey

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Amid declining enrollment in humanities programs throughout the United States, the English major has been hit the hardest. This article gives voice to current English majors about why they choose to enroll in a program that often receives criticism pertaining to its value and worth. This study provides a literature review of the history of higher education in the United States, an examination of the humanities backlash that has evolved over the past half-century, and an exploration of the value of a degree in English. In addition, it provides survey results from a small group of English majors currently enrolled …

The bones, which were found scattered above an alluvium fill in the cave, were well preserved. They represent at least forty individuals, the majority of which were adult males. Many of the bones manifested an inflammatory disease, which would account for the burial manner and the absence of children under the age of ten.

Khirbat El-Hawarit: A Ceramic Workshop On The Mount Hermon Slopes (Pp. 131–155), Moshe Hartal, Nicholas Hudson, Andrea M. Berlin

'Atiqot

A large mound of pottery sherds was exposed on the northern slope of the hill on which Khirbat el-Hawarit is located. Excavation of the mound revealed that it contained the debris of a workshop: vessels broken during the firing process, kiln ash and bricks. Although only fragmentary walls were unearthed, precluding the reconstruction of any building, the dump in itself is sufficient to identify the site as the main pottery production center of Mount Hermon, Banias and the northern Golan region during the Late Roman–Byzantine periods. Two distinct wares were found: Golan ware (late Hellenistic–late Byzantine periods) and Khirbat el-Hawarit …

Survey And Salvage Excavations On The Menashe Spur, Near Ḥorbat Bareqet And Kibbutz Regavim (Hebrew, Pp. 83–107; English Summary, Pp. 59–61), Amir Gorzalczany

'Atiqot

A large area, located in the catchment basin of Naḥal ‘Ada, was surveyed and consequently excavated, revealing a large number of walls and installations. Among the installations are many stone heaps and square towers. A trapezoidal enclosure was examined and partly excavated; it was most likely used to store agricultural produce. The remains in this area are probably part of an Iron Age satellite settlement, under the aegis of the city of Dor. The enclosures located in the area were dated to the Roman and Byzantine periods, and were possibly connected with the city of Caesarea. During the Islamic period …

Anthropological Analysis Of The Human Skeletal Remains From Naḥalat Ahim, Jerusalem (Pp. 121–124), Joe Zias

'Atiqot

The remains of 51 individuals were recovered from a Byzantine-period tomb at Naḥalat Ahim: 47% were adults, 40% were sub-adults and 4% were between 6–12 months; no neonates were identified. There was no discernible demographic pattern regarding age, sex or place of burial within the tomb. Two benign bone tumors were found in two different individuals; both types are previously unreported in excavations in Israel.

Petrographic Analysis Of The Persian-Period Pottery From Ḥorbat Malta (Pp. 81–86), Amir Gorzalczany

'Atiqot

Twenty-six samples of Persian-period wares from the Ḥorbat Malta excavations were studied. The pottery was divided into four petrographic groups: two groups point to the local production of amphorae, storage jars and cooking pots; the other two, to middle- and long-range imports. The middle-range imports are represented by two oil lamps, a jug and possibly a krater, and the long-range import is represented by a mortaria.

'Atiqot

A farmhouse, equipped with agricultural installations, was uncovered; it was surrounded by an ancient road and agricultural terraces. Two main occupation periods were observed within the farmhouse: the Late Iron Age (Stratum 2) and the Second Temple period (Stratum 1). The Late Iron Age building was built in accordance with the four-room house plan. It was part of an agricultural/industrial complex comprising a vineyard, a winery and a cellar. The pottery indicated that it was built during the eighth century BCE and was used until the end of the Iron Age. The Second Temple-period building reused the earlier one, with …

The Archaeozoological Finds From The Shoham (North) Caves (Hebrew, Pp. 161–168; English Summary, Pp. 64–65), Moshe Sade

'Atiqot

The archaeozoological findings from Shoham (North) originated in three caves and are associated with the Chalcolithic period, Early Bronze Age IB and the Intermediate Bronze Age. The main domestic mammal in the Chalcolithic period was the donkey, representing an outstanding percentage, probably reflecting its importance during this period.

Subterranean Storage Chambers From The Early Bronze Age Ib At Giv‘At Qesem (Pp. 1*–12*), Deborah A. Sklar-Parnes, Emanuel Eisenberg

'Atiqot

Some 2 km east of Tel Afeq, an excavation was conducted in three subterranean chambers exposed during construction works. The chambers, which were accessed by vertical shafts, probably served as storerooms for a nearby settlement. The pottery and flint objects, found in fills within the caves, date to Early Bronze Age IB. The surface treatment of the pottery reflects aspects of the northern EB IB culture, while the shapes of the vessels reveal a southern influence. These finds shed light on domestic and storage activities in the fourth millennium BCE.

Protohistoric Settlement Remains At Hittin, On The Fringes Of The Arbel Valley (Hebrew, Pp. 13–24; English Summary, Pp. 70*–71*), Nimrod Getzov

'Atiqot

A survey and a salvage excavation conducted on the western slope of the village of Peqi‘in exposed three strata of a large settlement (c. 100 dunams): the lower two strata (III–II) dated from the Late Chalcolithic period, and the upper stratum (I), from Early Bronze Age IA. The discovery of a large proto-historic settlement is of considerable importance, as until now, only small settlements from this period were known in Upper Galilee. The discovery of this settlement also contributes to our understanding of the finds at the nearby Chalcolithic burial cave excavated in 1995. The settlement’s large size might explain …

Faunal Remains From A Late Chalcolithic–Bronze Age Dwelling And Burial Caves At Shoham (North), Lod Valley (Pp. 1*–15*), Liora Kolska Horwitz

'Atiqot

Four Late Chalcolithic burial caves were excavated at Shoham (North). Within these caves, 1052 identifiable animal bones were recovered: 712 bones originated from Chalcolithic deposits; 179, from Early Bronze Age I deposits; 9, from Intermediate Bronze Age deposits; and 152, from mixed Chalcolithic/EB I sediments. The identified species were similar in both Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age samples, representing mainly domestic animals, e.g., sheep, goats, pigs and dogs, as well as large-sized equids (wild ass?). The samples differ, however, in their relative frequencies, which might represent different activities in the cave. The data presented in this article suggest that both …

A Late Chalcolithic And Early Bronze Age Settlement At Peqi‘In, In Upper Galilee (Hebrew, Pp. 1–12; English Summary, Pp. 69*–70*), Nimrod Getzov

'Atiqot

Along the western fringes of the remains of Hittin, two settlement layers were revealed: Stratum II, from the Early Chalcolithic period, and Stratum I, from the beginning of Early Bronze Age IA. Potsherds from the Pottery Neolithic period, EB IB and the Intermediate Bronze Age were found as well. The remains from Stratum II consisted of meager construction; the finds included bowls and holemouth jars with rope decoration, churns, bow-rim jars and flint implements. Stratum I comprised the remains of a wall and an adjacent pavement, accompanied by characteristic Gray Burnished Ware.

The Enemy Of My Enemy, Alessandro Stringhi, Sara Sara Gil-Gallen, Andrea Albertazzi Jan 2025

The Enemy Of My Enemy, Alessandro Stringhi, Sara Sara Gil-Gallen, Andrea Albertazzi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper studies how competition between groups affects cooperation. In the control condition, pairs of subjects play an indefinitely repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma game without external competition. In the treatment, two pairs compete against each other. No monetary rewards are tied to winning, isolating the bare impact of competition. In the treatment, cooperation increases by 16 percentage points. Strategies estimation shows a shift from selfish strategies (Always Defect) to cooperative ones (Grim Trigger). A theoretical model provides a rationale for the experimental results.

Perspectives On Usability And Adoption Of A New Acl Injury Prevention Programme For Female Handball Players: A Mixed Methods Approach, Anne Inger Mørtvedt, Tron Krosshaug, Erich Petushek

Michigan Tech Publications

Effective injury prevention programmes (IPPs) hold promise for mitigating ACL injuries in female handball players, yet adherence remains a challenge. This mixed methods study explores the relationship between programme usability characteristics and the potential effectiveness of a newly developed ACL IPP through survey and interview data from 23 female handball players aged 15-18 and their four coaches. Players' knee abduction moment (KAM) was measured during a cutting task and used to measure potential effectiveness. Findings reveal significant correlations between reductions in KAM and players' perceived effectiveness of the programme in reducing ACL injury risk and their intention to use it …
