Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu Apr 2006

Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

Polyrhythmic dance compositions from West Africa typically feature an ostinato bell pattern known as a time line. Timbrally distinct, asymmetrical in structure, and aurally prominent, time lines have drawn comment from scholars as keys to understanding African rhythm. This article focuses on the best known and most widely distributed of these, the so-called standard pattern, a seven-stroke figure spanning twelve eighth notes and disposed durationally as <2212221>. Observations about structure (including its internal dynamic, metrical potential, and rotational properties) are juxtaposed with a putative African-cultural understanding (inferred from the firm place of dance in the culture, patterns of verbal discourse, …

Piracy, Biopiracy And Borrowing: Culture, Cultural Heritage And The Globalization Of Intellectual Property, Olufunmilayo B. Arewa Mar 2006

Piracy, Biopiracy And Borrowing: Culture, Cultural Heritage And The Globalization Of Intellectual Property, Olufunmilayo B. Arewa

ExpressO

Discussions of both “piracy” and “biopiracy” often start from questionable assumptions about the nature of borrowing. In addition, legal treatment of local or traditional knowledge is often based on inadequate conceptions of the nature of culture and borrowing among cultures. Uses of local or traditional knowledge are embedded within an at times contentious discourse between North and South and have led to accusations of misappropriation, exploitation and “biopiracy.” This discourse reflects historical hierarchies of culture and power that continue to exert a strong influence on discourse, policy and the shape of legal doctrine. Many countries in the South lack the …

What Happened When A Mathematician Found Himself Funded By The National Endowment For The Humanities, Joel K. Haack Mar 2006

What Happened When A Mathematician Found Himself Funded By The National Endowment For The Humanities, Joel K. Haack

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Exploring the relationships between mathematics and the humanities can be stimulating for both faculty and students. That there are connections should surprise no one in interdisciplinary studies, but finding them might prove to be more difficult; humanists and mathematicians have not been involved in extensive dialogue in recent years. This study provides a field guide to the kinds of connections that one might find with examples of each.

Musical Life At Mission Santa Clara De Asis, 1777-1836, Margaret L. Cayward Jan 2006

Musical Life At Mission Santa Clara De Asis, 1777-1836, Margaret L. Cayward

Research Manuscript Series

The Spanish missions in Califomia1 were frontier outposts established in order to defend northern borderlands and also to extend Spanish civilization to the peoples of California. From the founding of Mission San Diego in 1769 to the secularization of Mission Santa Clara in 1836, these settlements remained distant from the Spanish metropolitan areas, yet not "off the end of the road" when it came to European cultural life. The Spanish crown, in conjunction with the Roman Catholic Church,2 sent Franciscan missionaries3 to "reduce" the Indian communities in California into concentrations of the population into religious settlements known …

The Politics Of Implementing Local Cultures In Music Education In Taiwan, Wai-Chung Ho Jan 2006

The Politics Of Implementing Local Cultures In Music Education In Taiwan, Wai-Chung Ho

Research & Issues in Music Education

Recent studies of the localization and globalization of Taiwan’s music education cannot explain the complicated interplay between localization and the pursuit of local cultures in national development and policy making in the broader society, and in school education in Taiwan between the late 1980s and 2004. Features of localization in Taiwan’s music education include the highlighting of local artists and musical styles such as Taiwanese opera, puppetry shows, and local folk music in the curriculum. More importantly, music education to support the indigenous core values of peace, the beauty of the homeland, and harmony in society and in everyday life …

Frustrations Of The Documentary Linguist: The State Of The Art In Digital Language Archiving And The Archive That Wasn’T, Robert E. Vann

Department of Spanish Research

This paper is a qualitative review and critique of existing electronic language archives from the perspective of the documentary linguist. In today’s day and age there are many online archives available for storage of and access to digital language data, among others: AILLA, ANLC, ASEDA, DOBES, ELRA, E-MELD, LACITO, LDC, LPCA, OTA, PARADISEC, Rosetta, SAA, THDL, and UHLCS. It is worth pointing out that I use the term language archive loosely in this paper, referring to a variety of organizations and resources such as those listed above that store and provide digital language data to different degrees and for different …

Richard Wallaschek's Nineteenth-Century Contributions To The Psychology Of Music, Amy B. Graziano, Julene K. Johnson Jan 2006

Richard Wallaschek's Nineteenth-Century Contributions To The Psychology Of Music, Amy B. Graziano, Julene K. Johnson

Music Faculty Articles and Research

RICHARD WALLASCHEK (1860-1917) is most widely known for his contributions to comparative musicology; however, he also made significant contributions to the field of music psychology. From 1890 to 1895, Wallaschek pursued interdisciplinary studies at the British Museum in London. During this time Wallaschek proposed theories about the perception and production of music. According to Wallaschek, the perception of music occurs through two types of mental representation: Tonvorstellung (tone representation), which referred to the perception of individual musical elements, and Musikvorstellung (music representation), which referred to the perception of the higher-order structure of music. Wallaschek emphasized Gestalt-like concepts in his discussion …

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2006

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the use of Contour Icons in the design and implementation of musical patterns, for the purposes of detection and recognition. Research work had endeavoured to deliver musical patterns that were both distinct and memorable, and to this end a set of basic melodic shapes were introduced using a Sonification application called TrioSon that had been designed for the purpose. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning Earcon design) has considered the mechanisms by which patterns may be made distinctive, but it is argued that separate consideration must be given to the method of making such …

Harmonically Combined Contour Icons For Concurrent Auditory Display, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2006

Harmonically Combined Contour Icons For Concurrent Auditory Display, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the harmonic combination of basic melodic shapes known as contour icons in concurrent auditory displays. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning earcons) has considered the combination of patterns designed using low level cognitive features, and so effective streaming is difficult. This work investigates means by which musical patterns with high level cognitive features (such as contour) representing data values can be rendered concurrently, so that multiple data sets can be effectively conveyed using an auditory display. The detection and comprehension of harmonically combined contour icons was tested in comparison to those combined uniquely (non …

Brazilian Nationalistic Elements In The Brasilianas Of Osvaldo Lacerda, Maria Jose Bernardes Di Cavalcanti Jan 2006

Brazilian Nationalistic Elements In The Brasilianas Of Osvaldo Lacerda, Maria Jose Bernardes Di Cavalcanti

LSU Major Papers

Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda (b. 1927) is an important figure in the Brazilian nationalist school of composition, following the tradition of Camargo Guarnieri. This study examines Brazilian nationalistic elements in the Brasilianas, a series of twelve suites for piano composed by Lacerda. These piano suites, written between 1965 and 1993, each comprise four movements, utilizing a wide variety of genres. This monograph is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides a background on Brazilian history and Brazilian musical nationalism. The second chapter consists of information about Lacerda. The third chapter contains historical aspects and musical characteristics of the genres …
