African Art Music For Flute: A Study Of Selected Works By African Composers, Wendy Kristin Hymes Onovwerosuoke Jan 2007

African Art Music For Flute: A Study Of Selected Works By African Composers, Wendy Kristin Hymes Onovwerosuoke

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recent years have witnessed an increase in the number of Western classical music performers actively programming works employing multi-cultural musical idioms. Though there exist many compositions by African composers, African art music is not often programmed by Western performers because of the lack of exposure these compositions have received, lack of commercially-available recordings, and the difficulties of obtaining information about African musical styles. The information presented in this research aims to aid performers in their preparation and approach to performing African art music compositions, specifically those for the western flute. This research includes biographical information and compositional philosophies of five …

To Cite Or Not To Cite? Confronting The Legacy Of (European) Writing On African Music, Kofi Agawu Jan 2007

To Cite Or Not To Cite? Confronting The Legacy Of (European) Writing On African Music, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

English Abstract:

The current citational practice in Western scholarship is ideologically loaded, being far more suited to a written economy than a primarily oral culture in which knowledge is preserved in memory and disseminated through repeated performance. The impact of orality on musical scholarship should be more closely investigated; African scholars have all too often become informants rather than theorists of their own traditions. It is therefore proposed that the routine citation of a body of scholarship developed without Africa's historically-specific intellectual needs and ambitions in mind should in fact be discouraged.

Absolute Pitch Perception And The Pedagogy Of Relative Pitch, Elizabeth West Marvin Jan 2007

Absolute Pitch Perception And The Pedagogy Of Relative Pitch, Elizabeth West Marvin

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

While intuition suggests that aural skills pedagogy should be closely linked to findings in music-cognitive research, music theorists have only infrequently written about this relationship (Butler 1997, Butler and Lochstampfor 1993). Gary Karpinski's research is a notable exception (Karpinski 2007, 2000, 1990), as are occasional articles appearing in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy and elsewhere (Lake 1993, Larson 1993, Marvin 1995, Potter 1990). More recently, two experimental studies have empirically tested the effectiveness of various dictation and sight-singing strategies (Killam, Baczewski, and Hayslip 2003, Lorek and Pembrook 2002). Even so, researchers from other fields as disparate as developmental psychology, …

A Study Of The Pedagogy Of Selected Non-Western Musical Traditions In Collegiate World Music Ensembles., James B. Morford Jan 2007

A Study Of The Pedagogy Of Selected Non-Western Musical Traditions In Collegiate World Music Ensembles., James B. Morford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Music teachers are often influenced by pedagogical practices in the collegiate ensembles in which they performed. Opportunities to participate in collegiate world music ensembles have increased in recent decades; West African ensembles and steel bands represent the second and third most common of these in the United States. The absence of scholarly research regarding the nature of the teaching and learning processes that occur in these non-Western ensembles represents a significant problem in music education. In this study, two collegiate West African ensemble directors and two collegiate steel band directors were interviewed using an instrument developed by the researcher to …

The Interpenetration Of Indonesian And Western Elements In Trisutji Djuliati Kamal's "Sunda Seascapes"., Pinkcheer Shintai Tamio Jan 2007

The Interpenetration Of Indonesian And Western Elements In Trisutji Djuliati Kamal's "Sunda Seascapes"., Pinkcheer Shintai Tamio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trisutji Djuliati Kamal (b Jakarta, 1936) is one of the most prolific of Indonesian composers. Her compositions encompass a wide range of genres including orchestral, chamber, choral, solo piano, opera, ballet, and film music. Due to her childhood musical background, which was dominated by the Javanese musical culture and tradition, combined with her Western musical training in Europe, many of her compositions exhibit the ingenious amalgamation of the musical idioms taken from both traditions. Sunda Seascapes is a set of seven character pieces written for solo piano. Two of the pieces in the set that most strongly exhibit the unique …

A Practical Guide To The Digitization Of Analog Reel Tapes, Lowell H. Lybarger Oct 2006

A Practical Guide To The Digitization Of Analog Reel Tapes, Lowell H. Lybarger

Faculty Scholarly Works - Library

The purpose of this document is to provide a condensed version of the specialized technical information available from the Bradley and CLIR/NRPB publications, and gleaned from various primary and secondary sources. In other words, this work is strictly a "bare-bones" guide for those persons seeking to learn the basics of the archival preservation of noncommercial audio recordings. It is strongly suggested, however, that one eventually consult the resources listed at the end of this document to gain in-depth knowledge of analog reel preservation.

The Don Dance: An Expression Of Karen Nationalism, Heather Maclachlan Oct 2006

The Don Dance: An Expression Of Karen Nationalism, Heather Maclachlan

Department of Music Faculty Publications

How do Karen people define themselves as Karen? This question has particular import for one community in New York State—the Karen of Utica. The two hundred members of this group affirm their distinctiveness in part by celebrating a day that is special to Karen people worldwide. Since their arrival in Utica in 1999, every January they dance the don dance, a dance created and practiced only by Karen people. This article will discuss the performance of the don dance in another context: in a refugee camp in Southeast Asia, the dance functions to create and reinforce a particular ideal of …

Peace Through Music: Music And Multiculturalism In Fiji, Felice Carey Oct 2006

Peace Through Music: Music And Multiculturalism In Fiji, Felice Carey

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The music of Fiji is as diverse as its population, and acts as both a mirror and catalyst to the culture. Indo-Fijians and indigenous Fijians have been the main players in Fiji’s multiculturalism, and are therefore focused upon. This paper explores the ways in which music is used to extol the benefits and cope with the problems of Fiji’s multiculturalism through cross-cultural listening (viewed from a perspective of radio) and fusion music. Fusion between Indo-Fijian and indigenous Fijian music is especially important – although extremely rare, it is in many ways a metaphor for attempts at racial reconciliation in Fiji.. …

The Riddim Method: Aesthetics, Practice, And Ownership In Jamaican Dancehall, Peter L. Manuel, Wayne Marshall Oct 2006

The Riddim Method: Aesthetics, Practice, And Ownership In Jamaican Dancehall, Peter L. Manuel, Wayne Marshall

Publications and Research

The Jamaican system of recording and performance, from the 1950s to the present, constitutes a distinctive approach to notions of composition, originality and ownership. Emerging from a tradition of live performance practice mediated by (and informing) sound recordings, the relative autonomy of riddims and voicings in the Jamaican system challenges conventional ideas about the integrity of a song and the degree to which international copyright law applies to local conceptions, as enshrined in decades of practice, of musical materials as public domain. With the spread of the ‘riddim method’ to the sites of Jamaican mass migration, as evidenced by similar …

Redefining Multicultural Education And Its Applications In The General Music Classroom, Emily C. Hardwick Jul 2006

Redefining Multicultural Education And Its Applications In The General Music Classroom, Emily C. Hardwick

Theses and Dissertations

"Understanding music in relation to history and culture" is the ninth standard for music education developed by the National Association for Music Educators (MENC) in 1994 (Mark, 1996, p. 50). This principle is very broad and it is up to individual teachers to make sure they include history and multiculturalism in their curriculum. The term multicultural education is extensive and because many teachers do not understand what all it entails, some students do not get a comprehensive multicultural education.

In the general music class for example, teaching students a Japanese folk song is a typical multicultural lesson. I do not …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Librarians, faculty and professional researchers, and students often encounter difficulties in locating pertinent journal articles for the field of archaeology. This article examines the coverage given to ninety-three archaeology journals originating in the United States over a fifty-year interval by twelve discipline-specific and subject-oriented indexes available online. The coverage provided by the individual indexes and some of the larger issues surrounding the coverage of the field itself are discussed, and several recommendations are offered.

The Study And Application Of Rhythmic Analysis For Wind Band Repertoire, Christopher Keith Dye

Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of this thesis is to inspire an interest in rhythmic analysis and an understanding of its tools and applications, particularly to the repertoire of the wind band. The content is divided into two sections. Part I deals with a general overview of the subject matter. It includes a review of literature on the subject of rhythm, an outlining of terms and systems that attempt to reconcile the broad approaches taken in the literature, and a general look at the tools and applications of rhythmic analysis. Part II deals directly with applications of rhythmic analysis. It consists often …

Religion And Spaces Of Technology: Constructing And Contesting Nation, Transnation, And Place, Lily Kong May 2006

Religion And Spaces Of Technology: Constructing And Contesting Nation, Transnation, And Place, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, I focus on one particular technological development that has come to influence religious practice in significant ways-religious broadcasting. Whereas computer-mediated communications now garner growing research attention, I have chosen to remember the influence of the older technology of broadcasting for its continued influence on myriad lives. In bringing this focus to bear on another major phenomenon, that of trans nationalism, I have come to understand how religious broadcasting does not contribute in a straightforward, linear fashion to perpetuating transnational identities and communities, but is instead implicated in the assertion of the national in the face of transnational …
