Making Junba Good In The Kimberley: Applied (Ethnomusicological) Research And Its Discontents, Sally Treloyn, Johnny Divilli, Rona Charles
Making Junba Good In The Kimberley: Applied (Ethnomusicological) Research And Its Discontents, Sally Treloyn, Johnny Divilli, Rona Charles
Talking Heads Seminar Series
In 2007 the Junba Project was conceived of by elder Ngarinyin practitioners of the Junba dance-song genre in the northcentral Kimberley in conversation with ethnomusicologist Sally Treloyn, in response to a decline in youth participation and concerns for youth social and emotional wellbeing. Elder song man and composer Scotty Nyalgodi Martin declaimed “Without culture we will all be lost”, referring not just to members of his own community but to all Australians and indeed humanity in general. Since that time the Junba Project, in partnership with elder and youth leaders, the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre, Kimberley Language Resource …

Soundtrack De Los 90: Argentine Popular Music And Memory, Delia Pamela Fuentes Korban
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on how popular music not only captures and records historical events, but also creates what Pierre Nora termed lieux de mémoire, or sites of memory. Music is a privileged art form because it reaches a wider audience and its lyrics manifest the changes occurring within its genres. My dissertation focuses on and analyzes song texts produced during the 90s from three musical genres: tango, rock chabón (from the hood) and cumbia villera (a derivative of cumbia, but from the shantytowns or villas). Framed against the historical context of the Menem years (1989-1999), the selection of songs that …

Verifying Modeling And Audiovisual Stimuli As Strategies For Mastering Guedes Peixoto's Maracatú, Rodrigo Clementino Diniz
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT
Literature has been saying that auditory Modeling can be a useful tool in order to develop or broaden musical interpretive ideas. In the same way, literature ventilates that audiovisual stimuli can be applied to musicians in order to raise emotions that some scholars consider as indispensable when it comes to deliver expressive musical communications. More specifically, research in the Music Performance field points out that Modeling and Audiovisual stimuli are useful strategies in the learning process of building up a musical interpretation, both, fostering expressive tools for aiming musical performance.
This research is intended to empirically verify the applicability …

Sunésis: Evolving Aesthetic Discourse In Traditional Music Practices In Ireland, Nollaig Ó Fiongháile
Sunésis: Evolving Aesthetic Discourse In Traditional Music Practices In Ireland, Nollaig Ó Fiongháile
Research Theses
The enquiry ‘Súnesis’ investigates aesthetic awareness in traditional music practices in Ireland and seeks to evolve an aesthetic discourse with the practices at hand.Súnesis undertakes a critical examination of a suite of performances from contemporary and traditional folk music practices in Ireland. Engaging an interpretative model evolved by Paul Ricoeur, the author designs a dimensional pathway to articulate the modes of consciousness and aesthetic awareness at work in the creative act.
It is proposed that a rethinking of traditional folk music is required, beyond the disciplinary, geographical or political boundaries more typically conceived in music studies. With an alternate …

Kelvin Burzon Interview, Maya Boustany
Asian American Art Oral History Project
Kelvin Burzon is a Filipino-American artist whose work explores intersections of sexuality, race, gender and religion. He was born on March 26, 1989, in Bataan, Philippines. As a child growing up in a Filipino culture, Burzon’s initial ambition was to become a Catholic Priest. “I have always been interested in the religion’s role in culture and familial relationships and have been drawn to the religion’s traditions, imagery, theatricality, and its psychological vestige.” His work is inspired by cerebral influences growing up in and around the church. “My cultural and familial identity, my memories as a child, cannot be separated from …

A Failure Of The Music Industry: The Frustration Of Women Of Color, Christina Estes-Wynne
A Failure Of The Music Industry: The Frustration Of Women Of Color, Christina Estes-Wynne
Backstage Pass
Throughout the history of the music industry, women of color have not received the same recognition as their male counterparts because males have dominated the industry resulting in lack of female representation. Women have been oversexualized reducing their clout in their fields and the lack of acknowledgement of success, which discourages future generations of colored women from attempting to reach their highest potential.
The Role Of Music In Assimilation Of Students At The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Abigail C. Winston
The Role Of Music In Assimilation Of Students At The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Abigail C. Winston
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Despite the vast research on the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, music is often overshadowed by the recognition of the school’s athletic program in the discussion of the place of extracurricular activities in Native American assimilation. This paper discusses the role of music in the assimilation of students at the Carlisle Indian School, drawing from the fields of both history and ethnomusicology to demonstrate that music had a much more profound effect on assimilation than athletics. Through a discussion on the differences between Native American and Western art music, and the disparity between their functions in society, it is clear that …

Leoš Janácek: The Theory Of Speech Melody In His Piano Sonata 1.X.1905 And In The Mists., Mirette Hanna
Open Access Dissertations
Janáček’s fascination with the intonation of speech started at an early age, and it accompanied him throughout his life. The study outlines elements of speech found in Janáček’s two piano works: the piano sonata “1. X. 1905” and the piano cycle “In the Mists” based on comparing and drawing parallels between his speech melody snippets that he collected during his lifetime with a number of motifs and techniques he employed in those studied works. This parallelizing process also relies on Janáček’s written articles, interviews and essays, as well as on research conducted on his operas and vocal works. Their importance …
Margulis Revisited: Once More On Program Notes And Audience Enjoyment, Jocelyn Abrahamzon
Margulis Revisited: Once More On Program Notes And Audience Enjoyment, Jocelyn Abrahamzon
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
In a 2010 study, Elizabeth Margulis finds that audience members enjoy classical music less when they read information about the piece before they hear it. Her result is surprising because conventional wisdom suggests that such pre-concert information would add to an audience members’ enjoyment of a concert. To gain further perspective, I decided to conduct a similar study on JMU’s campus that differed from Margulis’ in many ways. For example, participants attended a live concert rather than listening to excerpts of music through headphones. I created a survey that asked participants questions about their experience at a concert they attended …

Traditional Irish Musical Elements In The Solo-Piano Music Of Ryan Molloy, Brian Thomas Murphy
Dissertations
Music in Ireland has become increasingly popular in recent decades. There is no shortage of Irish musical groups, recordings, and live performances featuring Irish music both in Ireland and abroad. Contemporary art music in Ireland has also seen an increase in support and notoriety. Irish composers face a decision of how, if at all, to engage with traditional folk music that is so prominent in their culture. Ryan Molloy (b. 1983 in Pomeroy, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland) is a composer and performer who incorporates elements of traditional Irish music in the context and in the language of modern art music. …

Faculty Format Preferences In The Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study, Joe C. Clark, Jonathan Sauceda, Sheridan Stormes
Scholarship and Professional Work
Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction.
Death Ends A Life Not A Relationship: The Embodied Mourning And Memorializing Of Pets Through Material Culture, Gemma N. Koontz
Death Ends A Life Not A Relationship: The Embodied Mourning And Memorializing Of Pets Through Material Culture, Gemma N. Koontz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many individuals develop strong bonds with their pets, viewing them as close “furry” friends or family. When these beloved companions die, both their relational and physical absences are deeply felt. Lacking socially recognized rituals to mourn and memorialize their pets, owners turn to and adapt traditional “human practices,” primarily that of keeping meaningful or significant items of the deceased.
Using both personal experiences and perspectives from multiple fields, this thesis discusses the life-cycle of the human-animal bond, examines the types of items owners keep or create, and how these are used to facilitate both mourning (the outward expression of grief) …

They Never Stopped Rockin': A Brief History Of The Chitlin' Circuit, Mississippi, And Their Effects On America's Music, Warren Beebe
Honors Theses
This work focuses on the development of one of America's first musical tour routes: the Chitlin' Circuit. While its name may sound strange, the Chitlin' Circuit was responsible for the development of numerous distinct musical genres throughout the United States, such as blues and rock and roll in the twentieth century. Southern roadhouses, dive bars, and juke joints proudly showcased performers that gained initial fame touring with old medicine shows. As these artists gained recognition for their new musical stylings and elaborate showmanship, the owners of these local nightspots began to exchange contact information to better capitalize on these highly …

Music, Dance, And Tourism In Los Cabos, Mexico, Melanie E. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
For a thriving music and dance scene to flourish in tourist destinations, certain factors for performers must be present including economic stability, a baseline level of patronage, resilience to seasonal tourist fluctuations, and adaptation to demographic changes over time. In the Los Cabos arts community, local aesthetics are transformed and embodied by work of performers whose activities are multicultural and multilingual. Over the past fifty years, Los Cabos was transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a major international destination. The island-inspired arts scene includes live performances featuring cultural representations from other lands besides Mexico. Grounded in the humanities, I …
North Of Ourselves: Identity And Place In Jim Wayne Miller’S Poetry, Micah Mccrotty
North Of Ourselves: Identity And Place In Jim Wayne Miller’S Poetry, Micah Mccrotty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Jim Wayne Miller’s poetry examines how human history and topography join to create place. His work often incorporates images of land and ecology; it deliberately questions the delineation between place and self. This thesis explores how Miller presents images of water to describe the relationship between inhabitants and their location, both with the positive image of the spring and the negative image of the flood. Additionally, this thesis examines how the Brier, Miller’s most prominent persona character, grieves his separation from home and ultimately finds healing and reunification of the self through his return to the hills. In his poetry, …
A Case Study Of The Culturally Diverse Worship At The Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Richard Edwin Hickam
A Case Study Of The Culturally Diverse Worship At The Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Richard Edwin Hickam
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Florida Hospital Seventh-day Adventist Church (FHC) is a multicultural, multigenerational church in Orlando, FL. This case study will examine the history of the worshiping community with particular attention to the change in the culture of the worship services enacted in 2014 and its ongoing impact. The church moved from a traditional and a contemporary service to two identical culturally conscious worship services. This format is unusual in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) denomination. Seventh-day Adventism was named in a Pew study as the most diverse religion in the United States, but that does not mean its people are racially worshiping …

As children grow up surrounded by various ethnicities, races, and religious beliefs, we teach them music and dance to cultivate respect and empathy for the diverse people in our multicultural society. On the other side of the globe, China is also a multi-ethnic country and is home to 56 ethnic minority groups that speak multiple different languages. “Chinese music” is thus a collective term for the many disparate styles and genres of music in the country, which is especially rich in the varieties of folk music heard and played. Although Chinese folk music frequently appears in music textbooks in elementary …
Missa Arirang: A Fusion Of Korean And Western Music, Imgyu Kang
Missa Arirang: A Fusion Of Korean And Western Music, Imgyu Kang
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
This article examines Korean nationalism in Cool-Jae Huh’s Missa Arirang; this sense of nationalism is an extension of a movement that began in the late 19th century. Missa Arirang utilizes elements from Arirang, a popular Korean folk song, in the context of a Missa, or Mass; the work consequently follows the typical structure of a Mass Ordinary. The first movement, Kyrie, morphs from Western to contemporary Korean style using predominantly Western techniques. The Gloria, which follows, symbolically brings peace between two feuding provinces by blending together their respective Arirang traditions, and the Credo continues to allude to provinces …
