Treatment Modifications And Development For Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I, Sarah Hurt Oct 2024

Treatment Modifications And Development For Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I, Sarah Hurt

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a pediatric lysosomal storage disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the α-L-iduronidase (IDUA) gene that lead to the loss of a functional form of IDUA enzyme. Loss of this necessary enzyme leads to pathogenic accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in lysosomes, leading to cellular distention and dysfunction. IDUA is necessary in every cell of the body and, as a result, a loss of function leads to clinical manifestations of the disease such as developmental delay, cardiac dysfunction, bone disease (dysostosis multiplex), upper respiratory complications, and premature death. A range of severity occurs, with Hurler …

Pilots' Desire To Become Future Space Tourism Pilots: Polynomial Regression Using Response Surface Analysis, Robert A. Goehlich, Ralf Bebenroth

Publications

In this study, we investigated the impact of pilots’ motivation on their desire to be space tourism pilots or to remain in their current occupation (adherence). We analyzed the feedback obtained from a survey questionnaire on a sample consisting of 106 pilots with flying experience. In particular, we compared the pilots’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to investigate two outcomes: the desire to become future space pilots or to remain as air pilots. Applying the self-determination theory, we found that intrinsic motivation mattered more than extrinsic motivation. Furthermore, by applying response surface analysis as our statistical tool, it was revealed that …

What Do We Know About Hugging Face? A Systematic Literature Review And Quantitative Validation Of Qualitative Claims, Jason Jones, Wenxin Jiang, Nicholas Synovic, George K. Thiruvathukal, James C. Davis

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Background: Collaborative Software Package Registries (SPRs) are an integral part of the software supply chain. Much engineering work synthesizes SPR package into applications. Prior research has examined SPRs for traditional software, such as NPM (JavaScript) and PyPI (Python). Pre-Trained Model (PTM) Registries are an emerging class of SPR of increasing importance, because they support the deep learning supply chain.
Aims: Recent empirical research has examined PTM registries in ways such as vulnerabilities, reuse processes, and evolution. However, no existing research synthesizes them to provide a systematic understanding of the current knowledge. Some of the existing research includes qualitative …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The choice of appropriate physical quantities to characterize the biological effects of ionizing radiation has evolved over time coupled with advances in scientific understanding. The basic hypothesis in radiation dosimetry is that the energy deposited by ionizing radiation initiates all the consequences of exposure in a biological sample (e.g., DNA damage, reproductive cell death). Physical quantities defined to characterize energy deposition have included dose, a measure of the mean energy imparted per unit mass of the target, and linear energy transfer (LET), a measure of the mean energy deposition per unit distance that charged particles traverse in a medium. The …

Enhanced Shoulder-Surfing Cued Recall Graphical Password System: Sequential Passpoint, Titus D. Fofung Oct 2024

Enhanced Shoulder-Surfing Cued Recall Graphical Password System: Sequential Passpoint, Titus D. Fofung

Cybersecurity Graduate Research Symposium

During the past two decades, many graphical passwords have been used widely as an alternative to text-based passwords. However, most graphical password systems are plagued by shoulder-surfing problems, usability, and remembering capability. This study proposed a new graphical password called SPP (Sequential PassPoint), allowing users to remember three click-points on two images in specified order and image order. When the image order changes, the click order is reversed. Two decoy images for three random clicks were introduced to enhance the security of SPP. The proposed SPP system was validated both theoretically and empirically

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The study tested the nematicidal effects of essential oils from Bubonium graveolens and Launaea arborescens on the potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiens. The chemical composition of the essential oils was analyzed using GC-MS. To determine the concentration that killed 50% of the nematode population (LC50), five concentrations of the essential oils were applied to the tested organisms. The effects of essential oils on the hatching of cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis sp.) eggs in vitro demonstrated a wide variety of effects ranging from no impact to mild, moderate, and strong effects, which increased dramatically with exposure duration and concentration. All the …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

This study presents an in-depth examination of the energy levels and decay properties of Gadolinium (Gd) isotopes with mass numbers (A=156-160), utilizing the Interacting Boson Model-1 (IBM-1) within a broken SU(3) symmetry framework. Through this approach, we systematically calculated and analyzed the energy spectra, B(E2) transition probabilities, quadrupole moments, and potential energy surface (PES) which provided valuable insights into the shape and collective behavior of nuclei, as well as the decay properties of the selected Gd isotopes. The broken SU(3) symmetries provide a good description to the isotopes under study. This comprehensive analysis enhances the understanding of the nuclear structure …

Breathing Inequality? Income, Ethnicity And Pm2.5 Exposure In Bologna, Italy, Alessandra Drigo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This study addresses the presence of an environmental justice issue along the dimensions of income and ethnicity in the urban context of Bologna, Italy. Among other Italian cities, Bologna has historically had a left-leaning political tendency and has made considerable substantial efforts to address social issues extensively. This makes it a useful cross-section dataset links gridded PM2.5 concentration data at 0.01°x0.01° resolution with census demographic characteristics and income per capita information for the year 2011. This study presents two main findings. i) It confirms the existence of an environmental justice gap, which affects vulnerable segments of the population along both …

Antitrust Without Competition, Daniel Francis Oct 2024

Antitrust Without Competition, Daniel Francis

Duke Law Journal

Competition is everywhere in antitrust. Courts, agencies, and scholars routinely insist that antitrust can, does, and should measure the legality of conduct by asking whether it has harmed or promoted “competition.” The idea that competition is, without further definition, a coherent value that can be increased or reduced—and used to guide the development and application of antitrust rules—has dominated doctrine for a century, and is deployed freely by judges, enforcers, and writers across the political spectrum.

This does more harm than good, and it should stop. There is no single value or quantity, in economics or antitrust law, that competition …

Relocating Justice, Ruhan Sidhu Nagra Oct 2024

Relocating Justice, Ruhan Sidhu Nagra

Duke Law Journal

Managed retreat—the planned relocation of people facing imminent climate threats—is an inevitable part of future climate adaptation in the United States. Given that Black, Brown, and low-income communities are disproportionately vulnerable to climate hazards, managed retreat has significant justice implications. This Article explores what I call an apparent “justice paradox”—two “justice problems” with managed retreat that seem to point to opposite solutions. On the one hand, managed retreat can be inaccessible to marginalized communities, many of whom lack the resources to successfully navigate the relocation process. This justice problem suggests that decision-makers should prioritize managed retreat for marginalized communities since …
