Customer Service Operations: A Gatekeeper Framework, Maqbool Dada, Brett A. Hathaway, Evgeny Kagan

Faculty Publications

Customer service has evolved beyond in-person visits and phone calls to include live chat, AI chatbots and social media, among other contact options. Service providers typically refer to these contact modalities as “channels”. Within each channel, customer service agents are tasked with managing and resolving a stream of inbound service requests. Each request involves milestones where the agent must decide whether to keep assisting the customer or to transfer them to a more skilled – and often costlier – provider. To understand how this request resolution process should be managed, we develop a model in which each channel is represented …

Origami Folding Pattern Development For Gossamer 18 Structures, Larry L. Howell, Ivy Running, Carolina Wright, Robert J. Lang, Spencer Magleby

Faculty Publications

Gossamer structures for satellites are large, thin deployable structures that are attractive for space applications because they can be stowed compactly for transportation and deployed to have large functional surface areas. Reflectarray antennas, in particular, are candidates for gossamer structures because they can be realized on thin membranes. However, the efficiency of reflectarray antennas decreases with any deviations from a flat plane, including those induced by plastically deformed creases. Rolling membranes can prevent some plastic deformation, but requires relative slipping between layers that are rolled together. In this work, we describe, analyze, and demonstrate two rolled configurations for deployable gossamer …

Netchoice, Regulatory Competition, And The Real Battle Behind Social Media Regulations, Tao Huang, Assistant Professor Of Law

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Regulating online social media platforms has been a fiercely debated issue for years. The NetChoice case decided by the US Supreme Court 2023 Term arises from a circuit split regarding Florida and Texas laws that regulate social media content moderation. Most discussions on regulation of social media content moderation have focused on whether social media platforms are speakers (editors) or carriers (conduits), and whether their moderation practice constitutes editorial judgment (i.e., protected speech). This Article argues that this framing of the debate ignores another more important role of social media platforms—as regulators. Platforms, when they enact and enforce their content …
