Background
In response to the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, a K–12 workforce development initiative was launched to embed microelectronics education across US school districts. To promote sustainability, the initiative employed a district-wide vertical alignment strategy that progressively integrates microelectronics content and engineering-related career experiences from kindergarten through high school. While vertical alignment is often used for curriculum planning, its broader potential as a systems-level strategy remains underexplored.
Purpose
This study investigated how vertical alignment functions within a K–12 engineering workforce development initiative, focusing on enablers/barriers toward expanding and sustaining integration efforts. The research questions addressed stakeholder experiences with the …

With the recent increase of interest into artificial intelligence (AI), graphics processing units (GPUs) have been used as the main hardware architecture for AI computation. Because of their high power consumption and large size, it is necessary to consider other architectures to perform AI computing in outer-space where size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) are tightly constrained. One such architecture is the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Versal Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (ACAP), which can achieve acceptable AI throughput at a lower power and size compared to a GPU. As the Versal ACAP gets used in space applications, it is necessary …

We report reproducible magnetization anomalies appearing below room temperature in copper-doped apatite materials belonging to the LK-99 family synthesized via hydrothermal methods. These anomalies are observed consistently across samples prepared under comparable conditions. Although the extracted Mydosh parameter lies within the range often associated with vortex-glass behavior in superconductors, a detailed analysis of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, field dependence, and magnetic memory effects demonstrates that the observed phenomena are not related to superconductivity. Instead, the data are consistent with glassy magnetic freezing of interacting clusters. Compositional and structural analysis identifies covellite (CuS), one of the constituent phases in these multiphase …

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) provides dense spatial measurements of the dynamic strain along fiber optic cables, offering high-resolution wave sensing for ground motion monitoring and subsurface imaging applications. However, DAS records the axial strain or strain rate, whereas traditional seismic and engineering ground motion equipment and derived metrics are based on particle displacement, velocity, or acceleration, necessitating reliable strain-to-velocity conversion methods. This study evaluates three widely used conversion approaches: the fk-rescaling, curvelet-based conversion, and slant-stack methods. These approaches are applied to a unique high-energy, near-field, active-source dataset collected at the Birds Landing Site in Sherman Island, California. The dataset includes …

Between Promise And Power: Artificial Intelligence, Shareholder Activism, And The Corporate Governance Of The Next Generation, Pierluigi Matera
Journal of Science & Technology Law
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to influence the dynamics of corporate governance, with shareholder activism emerging as a particularly dynamic and contested domain of transformation.
Institutional investors are already leveraging sophisticated AI-powered tools to enhance decision-making and manage risk. At the same time, AI offers new possibilities for smaller and traditionally marginalized shareholders. By enabling real-time monitoring and strategic analysis, AI can amplify the power of individual investors—especially younger cohorts who combine technological fluency with values such as environmental sustainability and diversity—to shape identity-driven proxy campaigns. Although not AI-driven, the campaign led by Engine No. 1 against ExxonMobil illustrates how …

Exposing The Wizard Of Oz: Transparency And Testing Of Artificial Intelligence Systems, Henry H. Perritt
Journal of Science & Technology Law
The press and media, elected officials, some high-tech entrepreneurs, and a new breed of “ethicists” are calling loudly for governments to regulate artificial intelligence (“AI”), especially generative AI, popularized by ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Much of the clamor is ill-informed about the technology and based on exaggerated concerns about its risks. Nevertheless, the pressure for regulation is real and is already evoking governmental responses. Transparency requirements are far better than command-and-control regulation. The technology is far too new, however, for any form of command-and-control regulation. Would-be regulators need to take a deep breath and sit back for a while to …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Vignette studies present specific challenges for replications, yet vignettes are a popular choice for replication studies in leadership. In our review of eight vignette-based leadership publications, only two were able to fully replicate the original study's findings. We suggest that part of the failure to replicate the results of vignette studies may be due to a misalignment between the vignettes and social reality at the time of data collection. This paper highlights the challenges vignettes present due to societal progression and includes recommendations regarding potential methodological artifacts including the appropriateness of the sample, vignette content, and modality. We first discuss …

Nutrient Enrichment Of Palm Oil Mill Effluent Digestate (Pomed) With Fish Amino Acid And Boiler Ash For Biofertilizer Production, Aryati Putri Maharani, Ziyaulhaq Umar, Shahrul Ismail, Zulkarnaini Zulkarnaini
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Palm oil mill effluent digestate (POMED) has potential as a biofertilizer. However, its application is limited by unbalanced macronutrient composition, particularly low nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). This study investigated a laboratory-scale nutrient enrichment strategy for POMED using fish amino acid (FAA) as an organic nitrogen source and boiler ash (BA) as a potassium source. Nitrogen content was determined using a CHNS– O analyzer, while phosphorus and potassium were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP). Fertilizer quality was evaluated based on the standards and industrial research institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) and Indonesian national standard (SNI 2803:2010). FAA and …

Development Of Computational Imaging Pipelines To Advance Virtual Pet Imaging Trials, Suya Li
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Positron emission tomography (PET) provides functional information that is essential for disease diagnosis, treatment assessment, and biomedical research. However, the development and validation of PET imaging methods often require simulated imaging data with known ground truth, as well as large clinical datasets that are realistic and scalable. These requirements are difficult to satisfy using clinical studies alone, motivating the development of virtual PET imaging techniques. Physics-based simulation can model PET acquisition with high accuracy, but its computational cost limits its large-scale usage. Meanwhile, conventional digital phantom-based image generation approaches often lack the anatomical diversity and heterogeneous tracer uptake patterns observed …

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant diversity, consistent with top-down control patterns where predator gains cause herbivore declines, enhancing crop outcomes. In grasslands and forests, increasing plant diversity was associated …

The processes of moulding and reinforcing chemical elements have a big impact on the balance of chemical composition in copper-based bearing alloys. This has a direct impact on how well the material works. This study examines Cu–Sn alloys produced via sand casting and Cu–Zn alloys fabricated through permanent mould casting, with the incorporation of nickel, which remains uncommon. The objective was to examine the variations in the equilibrium of the chemical composition and the performance potential of the bearing alloy metal when subjected to different casting techniques and nickel concentrations ranging from 0% to 4%. Some of the methods used …

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) surveillance is critical for patient safety. Many healthcare systems use electronic algorithms to flag candidate infection events but still require manual chart review to confirm CAUTI cases. We evaluated the use of a large language model (LLM) to enhance CAUTI surveillance.
METHODS: We analyzed 919 potential CAUTI cases flagged by the electronic surveillance algorithm at Barnes-Jewish Hospital from 2021 to 2024. These cases were previously classified as 291 CAUTIs and 628 non-CAUTIs by trained infection preventionists (IPs). Several approaches for applying the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) CAUTI definition after extracting clinical data from …

This paper proposes to solve the challenge of making databases more user-friendly by interfacing them with OpenAI's ChatGPT-3.5 model. We implemented this solution to assist researchers in easily finding others with similar research interests. Our study involves 184 researchers from 14 departments at Southern Methodist University (SMU). We collected researchers' areas of expertise and biographies and stored them in a Neo4j graph database. We used OpenAI's embedding models to create vector representations of the collected data, allowing for accurate similarity assessments via Neo4j's built-in algorithms. By integrating this system with LangChain, we enabled natural language queries. The results demonstrated high …

Dam Negotiations: Water, Diné Sovereignty, And The Navajo Dam, George Smith
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
On July 30, 1958, contractors working for the Bureau of Reclamation broke ground on the Navajo Dam, located about 35 miles east of Farmington, New Mexico. Diné Tribal chairman Paul Jones had called the dam a “new hope for [his] people,” anticipating increased agricultural and industrial capacity from irrigation and flow management. Though officially approved in 1962, the contingent Navajo Indian Irrigation Project (NIIP) that was to provide those many of those benefits remained to be completed in 2024. By contrast, the San Juan Chama Project (SJCP), the other project contingent upon the dam, diverted water from the San Juan …

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen responsible for infections ranging from superficial mucosal disease to life-threatening systemic candidiasis, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Its pathogenicity is enhanced by morphological plasticity, biofilm formation, and immune evasion, contributing to antifungal resistance. Limitations of existing antifungals have driven interest in emerging therapeutics. This review highlights strategies including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), host-directed therapies (HDTs), CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, and phytochemicals. MOFs offer high drug-loading capacity, controlled release, and enhanced penetration into biofilms, showing promise against drug-resistant strains. Selected phytochemicals demonstrate inhibitory effects on virulence traits such as hyphal formation and enzyme secretion. CRISPR-Cas9 …
