How Certain Is The Continuity Of The Panama Canal And How Will It Affect The Global Supply Chain Industry?, Enmanuel Rodriguez Correa

Honors Theses

The Panama Canal, a critical artery of global trade, is under mounting threat from prolonged droughts, water scarcity, and evolving geopolitical dynamics, casting doubt on its long-term viability. This thesis investigates the continuity of the Panama Canal’s operations amid intensifying climate change, and assesses the broader implications for the global supply chain. As the canal facilitates approximately 5% of global maritime trade and provides billions in annual cost savings to shipping companies, any disruption poses severe consequences for global commerce, economic stability, and trade logistics.

The analysis begins by situating the canal within its historical and geopolitical context, emphasizing its …

Conditional Quantization For Some Discrete Distributions, Edgar A. Gonzalez, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury, David A. Salinas, Vishal Veeramachaneni May 2025

Conditional Quantization For Some Discrete Distributions, Edgar A. Gonzalez, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury, David A. Salinas, Vishal Veeramachaneni

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Quantization for a Borel probability measure refers to the idea of estimating a given probability by a discrete probability with support containing a finite number of elements. If in the quantization some of the elements in the finite support are preselected, then the quantization is called a conditional quantization. In this paper, we have determined the conditional quantization, first for two different finite discrete distributions with a same conditional set, and for a finite discrete distribution with two different conditional sets. Next, we have determined the conditional and unconditional quantization for an infinite discrete distribution with support {12𝑛:𝑛∈ℕ}. We have …

Karcı Fractional Artificial Neural Networks (Karcıfann): A New Artificial Neural Networks Model Without Learning Rate And Its Problems, Meral Karakurt, Hülya Saygili, Ali̇ Karci May 2025

Karcı Fractional Artificial Neural Networks (Karcıfann): A New Artificial Neural Networks Model Without Learning Rate And Its Problems, Meral Karakurt, Hülya Saygili, Ali̇ Karci

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The learning rate parameter used in classical artificial neural networks (ANNs) designed with stochastic gradient descent causes problems such as failure to learn, getting stuck in local minima, memorization, and long training times (divergence problem). To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel ANN method that uses a fractional derivative instead of Newton’s derivative. This method is referred to as Karcı fractional ANN (KarcıFANN). In classical ANNs, the weight update is done by assigning the same constant value to the learning rate in each iteration or for a set number of iterations. In contrast, in KarcıFANNs, the weight update …

A Proposed Coding Algorithm With Ai-Assisted Restoration Capability, Parviz Gharehbagheri, Hamid Haj Seyyed Javadi May 2025

A Proposed Coding Algorithm With Ai-Assisted Restoration Capability, Parviz Gharehbagheri, Hamid Haj Seyyed Javadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces an innovative encoding method based on the concept of "distancecodes" , which allows characters to appear randomly in different locations during the decoding process. Codeword-based algorithms decode and present their characters sequentially, which can hinder accurate reconstruction in the event of incomplete text decoding, as there is no intelligent or non-intelligent model available for continuing the text reconstruction. In contrast, our proposed algorithm allows for the non-sequential and scattered appearance of characters throughout the data during the decoding process. This enables AI algorithms to restore undecoded characters using contextual information such as decoded characters, adjacent complete and incomplete …

Hotlangbench, A Tiny Benchmark Suite For Higher-Order Statically Typed Languages, Konstantin Laufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This work in progress aims to compare various HOT (higher-order and statically typed, a term coined by Phil Wadler) through reproducible course-grained, wall-time benchmarks. Our overall goals include simplicity, agility, and reproducibility.

There is currently only one benchmark, but it brings out substantial performance differences among the various languages and platforms. It uses function composition and other higher-order constructs to build a pipeline of transformations, along with a brute-force iteration that is computationally expensive for input files specifying large ranges as function domains. We currently include versions in Modern C++, C#, Go, Haskell, Kotlin, Modern (stream-based) Java (24), OCaml, Scala …

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry May 2025

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry

Theses and Dissertations

First-generation college students (FGCS) often encounter greater challenges than their peers. Universities offer transition programs like bridge programs, orientations, and advising, but service gaps contribute to FGCS difficulties. Bridge programs are often implemented for specific student groups that the university believes to be at-risk or more vulnerable than their peers. Targeted students are asked to come to campus early for additional training, education, and advising. The program is thought to bridge the gap between what they know and what they need to know to be college-ready and on-level with their peers. This case study examines the transition experiences of seven …

Emerging Investigator Series: Are We Undervaluing Septage? Rethinking Septage Management For Nutrient Recovery And Environmental Protection, Kevin Orner, Stetson Rowles, Sara F. Heger, Ben Howard May 2025

Emerging Investigator Series: Are We Undervaluing Septage? Rethinking Septage Management For Nutrient Recovery And Environmental Protection, Kevin Orner, Stetson Rowles, Sara F. Heger, Ben Howard

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications

An estimated 20–25% percent of households in the US rely on on-site sanitation via septic tanks to manage their wastewater. Septage management strategies such as land application, treatment at wastewater treatment plants, and treatment at independent septage treatment plants are common regulated and protective processes for managing septage. There can, however, be potentially negative environmental impacts such as groundwater contamination if septic systems are failing or improperly designed. In this perspective, we reimagine septage management at each step of the septage value chain, identify barriers to change, and propose solutions to overcome these existing barriers. Reimagined septage management can take …

Personalizing Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Regimens For Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Using A Biology-Based Digital Twin, Chase Christenson, Chengyue Wu, David A Hormuth, Jingfei Ma, Clinton Yam, Gaiane M Rauch, Thomas E Yankeelov

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Despite advances triple negative breast cancer treatment, ~50% of patients will not achieve a pathological complete response prior to surgery with standard of care neoadjuvant therapy (NAT). We hypothesize that personalized regimens for NAT could significantly improve patient outcomes, which we address with a patient-specific digital twin framework. This framework is established by calibrating a biology-based model to longitudinal magnetic resonance images with approximate Bayesian computation. We then apply optimal control theory to either (1) reduce the final tumor cell number with equivalent dose, or (2) reduce the total dose of NAT with equivalent response. For (1), the personalized regimens …

The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore middle school teachers’ perceptions of how homework influenced academic achievement and student learning in Southern Maryland. The theory guiding this study was Bandura’s theory of social knowledge. Bandura suggests that observation, modeling, and role-play are significant in how individuals learn because these direct experiences shift one’s environment. In this study, 14 middle school teachers in Southern Maryland were interviewed, seven of whom were employed at a school with the standard practice of homework, and seven worked at a school with a “No Homework” policy. Data collection, interviews, and questionnaires were …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study investigated the challenges confronting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Western Sierra Leone, with a particular focus on the impacts of rising tax rates. These increasing tax burdens restrict investment opportunities and impede growth, resulting in cash flow issues that jeopardize the sustainability of many SMEs. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research involved in-depth interviews and structured surveys with SME owners, representatives, and officials from the National Revenue Authority (NRA). The findings indicated that escalating tax rates, along with other issues such as corruption and political connections, significantly hindered SMEs growth, underscoring critical implications for their development.

Fired And Fractured: An Analysis Of Broken Ceramics, Evan Mcguire May 2025

Fired And Fractured: An Analysis Of Broken Ceramics, Evan Mcguire

Honors Projects

How does the construction of a ceramic object affect how it breaks? How does the force applied affect this break? These questions are based on my first-hand observations of the multitude of ceramic fragments found in different states of decay at archaeological sites. To answer these questions, I created samples that imitate ancient ceramics and then broke them in different ways. I then analyzed the fracture surfaces and looked for evidence of weak points in the objects. Pieces that were hit by a blunt force, such as a hammer, had radial fractures that formed along paths that had clusters of …

South Carolina And The Blue Ridge Rail Road, 1852 To 1873: Dreams Of Linking The South And West, Steve E. Gibson May 2025

South Carolina And The Blue Ridge Rail Road, 1852 To 1873: Dreams Of Linking The South And West, Steve E. Gibson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

While the 1850s were productive and railroading did innovate with the initial adoption of steel, the embrace of the telegraph, the use of coal as a fuel, and the opening of generally long railroads, particularly in South Carolina, the railroads themselves generally remained conservative (almost timid) in their business models and strategic thinking. This was especially true in the South. Northern railroads recognized the need to connect major cities, connect seaports with crop productive hinterlands, and generally understood that railroad mobility, mixed economic development, and prosperity were intertwined and mutually reinforcing with the prosperity of both the railroad and the …
