Scientific Visual Communication And Collaboration Within Text-To-Image Genai: A Scoping Review, Hao Wei Tu, David Mesa, Christine Thong
IASDR Conference Series
Text-to-image generation artificial intelligence (T2I GenAI) tools such as DALL·E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney have emerged as fast and flexible tools for creating scientific visualisations since 2020. However, their application in scientific communication and collaboration remains fragmented across disciplines. To map this landscape, we conducted a scoping review of 38 peer-reviewed articles published after 2020, following the Arksey & O’Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We combined manual searches in Web of Science, Scopus, ACM, and IEEE with AI-assisted searches through Elicit. Then we applied strict inclusion criteria and subject coding. Our analysis identified four main mechanisms by which T2I GenAI …

Designing Interactive Reward Mechanisms Application For Children With Different Learning Motivations And Related Reading Behaviors, Yu-Shiuan Lin, Ko-Chiu Wu
IASDR Conference Series
Based on design thinking principles, this study explores how children with different types of learning motivation—curiosity-driven and task-oriented—engage with a prompt-based interface to search for books and record their reflections after reading. By integrating the concept of prompt engineering into library search and information retrieval interfaces, the researcher conducted qualitative observations of children’s behavioral responses during interface interactions. The study identified two distinct interaction patterns among participating children (ages 7 to 11), leading to the development of two corresponding interface strategies and the subsequent creation of initial prototype tests. For curiosity-driven children, the interface encourages open- ended exploration, while for …

Safety Risks Of Elderly Bicyclists: A Systematic Review, Kevin C. Tseng
IASDR Conference Series
Growing environmental awareness and health consciousness, along with government initiatives, have contributed to the increasing popularity of bicycling as both a mode of transportation and a form of recreation. However, this increase in popularity has been accompanied by growing concerns about safety, particularly among elderly cyclists. Research in this area is challenging due to variations in cultural contexts, individual backgrounds, and statistical methodologies. This study addresses these challenges by integrating a discussion with an analysis of the occurrence ratio to systematically examine potential safety risks for elderly cyclists. The findings of the literature review indicate that elderly men and children …

Decoding Intangible Cultural Heritage Ecology: A Co-Creation Framework For Systemic Design --- Insights From The Dali National Eco-Cultural Protection Zone, Ziyue Zhang, Xiaolei Min
IASDR Conference Series
At present, the protection of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has entered the stage of systematic protection. The National Eco-Cultural Protection Zones (NECPs), first created by China, are an important model for protecting ICH in the social-natural-cultural ecosystem. However, their sustainable development faces continuous systematic challenges: (1) Intergenerational Transmission Fracture and Policy Misalignment (aging inheritors, youth out-migration, misaligned policies); (2) Digital Activation Gap (static digital archives failing to drive innovation); and (3) Fragile Protection Ecosystem (fiscal dependency, product homogenization, weak market competitiveness). Tobreakthis vicious cycle, we propose a novel Design-Driven Multi-stakeholder Collaborative Co-creation Governance Framework. Its core innovation elevates digital technology …

Establishing Generalizable Garment–Body Interaction Models Through 4d Biomechanical Analysis, Xiaolu Li, Chongyang Ye, Joanne Yip
IASDR Conference Series
Accurate simulation of garment–body interactions is essential for enhancing virtual prototyping in apparel design. However, conventional virtual prototyping platforms rely on rigid avatars that inadequately reflect the complex deformation of human soft tissues, particularly for tight-fitting sportswear. Biomechanical models have been developed to address this issue. Nevertheless, their subject-specificity and reliance on specific imaging data limited their applicability across diverse body types and motions. To overcome these limitations, this study establishes a comprehensive scientific basis for understanding the biomechanical characteristics of soft tissues in young female adults, based on population-level 4D body scanning analysis. Specifically, 4D body scanning technology was …
Making Meaning Manifest: Communication And Relevance In Design Thinking, Luke Feast
Making Meaning Manifest: Communication And Relevance In Design Thinking, Luke Feast
IASDR Conference Series
This paper examines communication in design thinking, drawing on Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory as an alternative to the prevailing information-processing model. While design thinking is commonly framed as problem-solving, we propose that designed artefacts function as ostensive stimuli that guide users' inferential processes rather than encoding fixed meanings. The ostensive-inferential model reveals how designers communicate through intentions, where users actively infer meaning based on evidence, context, and relevance. This framework explains complex communicative phenomena, including affordances, metaphors, cross-cultural design considerations, and ethical dimensions of design practice. This perspective has significant implications for design thinking education and practice, emphasising communication …

IASDR Conference Series
In countries with rapidly aging populations and shrinking workforces, socially assistive robots offer a potential solution to societal development. The robots' appearance serves as a clue to the various forms of interaction, indicating how safe it may be to interact with them and what functions to expect. This study investigated how the overall appearance of 15 socially assistive robots contributes to emotional perception, including Anshin-kan (anxiety, fear, surprise), Acceptance (willingness to interact, societal benefit, likability, ease of use, and usefulness), and Social Perception (familiarity, friendliness, intelligence, and kindness). We also explored the strength to which specific appearances are associated with …

Mindmesh: A Collaborative Canvas For Designing Generative Ai In Creative Context, Cong Fang, Yujie Zhu, Le Fang, Zhiyuan Lou, Elif Ozden Yenigun, Wei Liu, Stephen Jia Wang
IASDR Conference Series
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly integrated into creative design practices, but designers often struggle to effectively align its capabilities with their workflows. Current approaches to GenAI development frequently emphasise technological innovation over the practical needs and experiences of designers. This technology-centred focus overlooks the diversity of designers’ practices, including their workflows and habitual methods, thus limiting opportunities for meaningful collaboration and interaction between designers and GenAI systems. To address this gap, we introduce Mindmesh, a collaborative design canvas developed to support interdisciplinary teams in designing GenAI tools within creative contexts. Developed through literature review, co-occurrence analysis, and expert feedback, …

Knowledge Graph Application In Input-Defined Design Education Under Transdisciplinary Contexts, Liang Dong, Can Lu, Yijun Huang, Xuejing Feng, Chun-Hsien Chen, Meng Wang
IASDR Conference Series
As transdisciplinary design education evolves to meet complex societal and technological demands, it is increasingly challenged by curricular fragmentation and pedagogical inefficiencies. To address these issues, this paper first proposes the Input-Output Design Education Model (IODEM), which conceptualizes design education as a structured interplay between three categories of knowledge inputs (procedural, product, and contextual) and three types of design outputs (conceptual, representational, and critical). Subsequently, the course Product Design Based on Origami Structures is introduced as a representative case to examine how a Rigid Origami Knowledge Graph (ROKG) can facilitate transdisciplinary education, which is developed by synthesizing structural engineering knowledge …

Developing Publics In Companies Through Infrastructuring For Data-Driven Workplaces In Japan, Masako Kitazaki, Riichiro Take, Ryoko Koborita, Yuichi Nakamura
IASDR Conference Series
This study investigates how the participatory design concept of infra structuring and the formation of a public manifests differently in Japanese workplaces under data-driven management. Building on recognized pillars for public formation—incorporation of authority, development of attachment, and cultivation of ownership—we explore how these elements are shaped by Japan's unique organizational and cultural dynamics. Although employees in Japan express concerns about data use in the workplace, such as potential increases in bias, discrimination, deskilling, and unsafe practices, these anxieties rarely lead to open discussion or collective action. We argue that socio cultural factors, including a deep-rooted emphasis on harmony and …

Exploring The Factors Associated With The Effectiveness Of Airline Safety Briefings: An Information Design-Based Perspective, Yuhan Cao, Chunxi Huang, Hao Tan
IASDR Conference Series
In air travel, passengers’ safety knowledge is a critical factor in ensuring their survival in life-threatening or hazardous situations. Aviation regulations require airlines to provide safety briefings that inform passengers about in-flight safety procedures to ensure appropriate responses in emergencies. However, the effectiveness of in-flight safety briefings remains a concern. To this end, the current study explores the factors associated with the effectiveness of airline safety briefings from an information design- based perspective. More specifically, a 2×2×2 experimental design was employed, considering three key variables: information format (i.e., narrative vs. non-narrative), information framing (i.e., gain vs. loss), and information presentation …

E-Broidery In Wonderland: A Pilot Study On Tangible Narratives With Interactive E-Textile, Wenhui Yue, Jeanne Tan
IASDR Conference Series
While tangible narratives (TNs) move intangible stories into the physical world, research has often prioritized technological novelty or external goals over the narrative itself. To address the gap, this paper presents "E-broidery in Wonderland", a collection of interactive e-textile artifacts for storytelling. Four electronic embroidery prototypes were created for the story of Alice in Wonderland to explore how prior knowledge of stories influences user interaction (RQ1) and to assess the impact of e-textiles on a familiar story in TNs (RQ2). Through a mixed-methods pilot study with 12 participants, a critical pattern emerges between users' familiarity and their primary interaction with …

Co-design is essential for creating innovation and acceptable solutions, yet scheduling and on-site access often make in-person sessions infeasible. Social virtual reality (VR) is emerging as a promising alternative for co-design efforts. However, the specific challenges associated with VR make it difficult to directly apply co-design methods that are effective in traditional in-person workshops. This study aims to propose and evaluate a novel co-design method using social virtual reality (VR) for asynchronous collaborative designing in the context of childcare. The virtual environment included photo gram metric scans of a childcare room to simulate on-site design activities virtually, as well as …
Sensing Soil Habitability: Relational Data For Multispecies Attunement, Diya Samit, Mathias Funk, Bahareh Barati
Sensing Soil Habitability: Relational Data For Multispecies Attunement, Diya Samit, Mathias Funk, Bahareh Barati
IASDR Conference Series
Design research increasingly engages with ecological complexity through the emerging bodies of More- than-Human design (MtHD) and biodesign. While these fields share topical concerns, they differ in their onto-epistemological orientations, particularly in how they employ data. Biodesign often harnesses data to engineer novel functions in living systems, whereas MtHD emphasizes relationality, care, and designing with other-than-humans. Despite growing interest in bridging these perspectives, data practices at their intersection remain predominantly representational or oriented towards instrumental control. This paper responds to calls for rethinking data by introducing Soil Habitability as both a conceptual and methodological lens, grounded in an exploratory research-through-design …

The Creative Process In Interdisciplinary Teams: A Dual Mechanism Model, Shyhnan Liou, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Davi A. Gomez Celis, Yu-Chen Chen, Shin-Bou Lin, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
Interdisciplinary teams are crucial for organizational innovation but face a dual-process challenge: disciplinary differences can either foster creativity-enhancing integrative complexity or hinder it through intellectual centrism. This study examines these opposing mechanisms and their contingent factors. Drawing on paradox theory, we propose that conflict arising from disciplinary differences activates: (1) integrative complexity (the differentiation and integration of contradictory perspectives), which enhances creative performance; and (2) intellectual centrism (a rigid adherence to one’s discipline), which inhibits creativity. Paradoxical task framing (e.g., pursuing novelty and practicality) intensifies both mechanisms. Notably, these effects primarily emerge during the convergent phase (idea selection) of the …
Bridging Data Gaps In Automotive Hmi: A Triple Diamond Framework For Data-Driven Design And Cross-Functional Collaboration Through Interactive Dashboard, Zhenli Liu

Automotive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) innovation faces a critical paradox: user-centred design in software-defined vehicles requires agility. However, this demand conflicts with the rigidity of manufacturing's stage-gate processes, resulting in a systemic challenge. This research delves into the complex issues of fragmented data practices and cross-functional collaboration in HMI design. A mixed- methods qualitative study within an automotive UX design department revealed barriers including varying data literacy, fragmentation, and silos. To address these challenges, the research introduces emerging technology - Business Intelligence (BI) System that enables real-time visualisation of data and facilitates seamless access across multidisciplinary teams by user insights dashboard, …
Memories Evoked By Prototypes: Proposal Of A Priming-Based Method To Foster Co-Creation, Keita Mitomi, Seiko Shirasaka
Memories Evoked By Prototypes: Proposal Of A Priming-Based Method To Foster Co-Creation, Keita Mitomi, Seiko Shirasaka
IASDR Conference Series
Our results indicate that personal memory connections—rather than prototype fidelity per se—appear to be more strongly associated with stakeholders’ willingness to co-create with early-stage prototypes. Although prior work emphasizes prototype fidelity in relation to willingness to co-create, the cognitive interpretation process by which people make sense of prototypes remains a black box. We model interpretation as a memory-based mapping process: viewers (i) notice prototype cues, (ii) recall relevant experiences, (iii) map specific elements from those memories onto the cues (“mapped base nodes”), and (iv) update their mental image of the final product. A formative think-aloud study (n = 6) with …

This study presents the user-centered development and heuristic evaluation of a mobile application designed to support emotional care for children aged three to six during medical visits. Drawing on a spiral development model, the research integrated expert interviews, caregiver surveys, and user interviews to define user needs, identify use scenarios, and establish a comprehensive interaction structure. Four primary functions were proposed: (1) symptom tracking, (2) health education, (3) disease information, and (4) therapeutic games. Based on the defined structure, a static prototype was created and evaluated through a heuristic evaluation by five interdisciplinary experts using Nielsen’s usability principles. The heuristic …

As global environmental challenges intensify, sustainable human-computer interaction (SHCI) research has gained increasing importance. Eco-feedback technology, which monitors and provides feedback on individuals' environmental impact, plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable behaviors. However, existing eco-feedback mechanisms exhibit significant limitations, including monotonous feedback formats and content, lack of fine-grained perception of individual energy behaviors and personalized feedback, and inadequate integration of multi-source energy information for real-time targeted responses. These limitations result in users' vague understanding of their energy consumption patterns and difficulty translating energy conservation awareness into concrete actions. This problem is particularly pronounced in office environments where users typically …
