Even A Scorpion Sting Hurts Just As Much: A Sobering Look At Men As Victims Of Intimate Partner Abuse And Violence, Nelson Mwesiga Ishengoma Jan 2026

Even A Scorpion Sting Hurts Just As Much: A Sobering Look At Men As Victims Of Intimate Partner Abuse And Violence, Nelson Mwesiga Ishengoma

Tanzania Journal of Sociology

The subject of intimate violence and abuse has piqued the interest of different groups of people, including psychologists, scholars, and human rights activists over the past 45 years. Even though the epidemiological literature has consistently shown that at least one out of every three people who experience intimate partner violence is a male partner, current initiatives have chosen to ignore this fact. Instead, the phenomenon has been described by most of its advocates as a gender-cockeyed social issue, with a man penned in an “offender” position and a woman in that of a “helpless victim”. Consequently, the exploited man and …

Uncovering Hidden Struggles Among Disaster Survivors In Tanzania: Are They Vulnerable Survivors Or Resilient Victims?, Egidius Kamanyi

Tanzania Journal of Sociology

Understanding experiences of disaster survivors as they struggle to bounce back from disaster-caused traumatic experiences, requires concerted and focused efforts involving scholars and practitioners. Developing countries like Tanzania accommodate people who after crisis end up living in misery and not completely recovering. Notwithstanding, however, those labeled resilient or vulnerable usually simply portray a distorted 'face value' reality of the struggles endured. Using a qualitative approach informed by a Chordal Triad of Agency Conceptualization, the paper’s main objective is to uncover hidden struggles among disaster survivors. By recapitulating on the previous study conducted in Kagera14, I extend the argument based on …

Adversarial Comparativism: The Role Of Emotion In United States–China Comparative Law Projects, Matthew S. Erie

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Contemporary comparative law operates across a landscape riven by protectionism, nationalism, and securitization, all of which complicate comparative law projects. Nowhere is this more evident than in the U.S-China relationship, the most important bilateral relationship in the world. Despite economic “delinking,” the U.S. and Chinese legal systems are interacting more than ever; however, how this interaction works is poorly understood. This Article proposes “adversarial comparativism” to explain this dynamic. It is an approach to comparative law and politics that includes different modalities: competition, aggressiveness, transactionalism, misunderstanding, opportunism, and gaslighting. Many of these are underpinned by emotion. As such, while this …

How Are African Livestock Farmers Responding To Climate Variability And Change? A Systematic Review, M A. North, Nina B. Hunter, K Queenan, R Slotow

Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Livestock underpin livelihoods and food security in Africa, using marginal lands to produce high-quality protein for the household or as a source of income. For mixed farmers, livestock provide draught power, manure for fields, and buffer variations in crop productivity. Livestock also hold cultural significance. However, African livestock farmers are especially vulnerable to climate hazards, and attempt to reduce impacts in different ways, with varied outcomes. A synthesis of the state of knowledge of livestock farmers’ responses to climate variability and change would assist policymakers and practitioners to make informed decisions, and guide researchers towards gaps that need to be …

Reducing Youth False Confessions With Attorney Presence, Rosa Bowden-Maccalla Jan 2026

Reducing Youth False Confessions With Attorney Presence, Rosa Bowden-Maccalla

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Interrogation techniques are influenced by the interrogator's style and the individual being interviewed. Most law enforcement agencies use adult-centered interrogation methods, leading to suboptimal results when working with youth. The research has focused on youth offenders in the interrogation room and the choices they make, often leading to false confessions when an attorney is absent. This suggests that the presence of legal representation helps protect youths' vulnerability, suggestibility, and rights, thereby reducing the likelihood of false confessions. This qualitative collective case study aimed to understand why youth offenders falsely confess by collecting seven anonymous questionnaires from multigender U.S. practicing attorneys …

System For Autonomous Behavioral Verification And Remediation Of Migrated Database Code, Khushmeet Rekhi Jan 2026

System For Autonomous Behavioral Verification And Remediation Of Migrated Database Code, Khushmeet Rekhi

Defensive Publications Series

The migration of database code may result in data corruption when static translation tools do not fully account for behavioral differences between source and target platforms, for example, in rounding or null value handling. A dynamic verification approach can address this. A system may passively observe a legacy database to capture truth vectors, which can be records linking transaction inputs to their verified outputs. Translated code can then be executed in an isolated sandbox environment using these inputs. A semantic comparator may analyze the new output against the legacy output from the truth vector. If a material discrepancy is found, …

Hull structures must withstand design loads throughout their expected lifetime. Industry practice often uses a comparative approach, which works for designs similar to proven ships with good service records. However, it can leave some members overly heavy while others barely meet strength criteria, and errors may remain hidden until construction. To prevent such issues at the initial design stage, scantlings should be optimised and reviewed numerically. To address these limitations in the initial design stage, this study aims to develop and demonstrate a practical numerical framework for optimising hull scantlings by integrating a fully automated single-objective optimisation procedure with direct …

Visual Relocalization Method Combining Region Classification And Local Feature Enhancement, Yining Wang, Yanli Liu, Guanyu Xing

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Visual relocalization tasks have important application value in fields such as digital twin and augmented reality. The current mainstream methods still face challenges such as mismatch between coordinate regression scale and receptive field and insufficient attention to local information. A visual relocalization method that combines region classification and local feature enhancement is proposed. The coordinate regression problem in large space is transformed into a multi-region classification problem and a coordinate regression problem inside a small scene, which significantly reduces the uncertainty of coordinate regression and makes the network globally have a large receptive field. A conditioning layer using deep …
