Ohio is home to 452 cooperatives, including some of the largest agricultural co-ops in the country, and is the birthplace of rural electric cooperatives in the U.S. However, prior to this analysis there was little information about the economic impact of those cooperatives on the state’s economy. The research team used various public sources and interviews to gather data on 58 agricultural and food cooperatives and 25 rural electric cooperatives in Ohio. This study found that agriculture, food, and rural electric cooperatives supported an estimated 12,910 full-time and part-time jobs in the state, attained $875 million in labor income, and …

Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) is defined as a speech disorder mainly characterized by intermittent involuntary disruption in normal fluency, time patterning, and rhythm of speech. Although extensive functional neuroimaging studies have explored brain activation alterations in stuttering, the main affected brain regions/networks in PDS still remain unclear. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated resting-state whole-brain functional connectivity of 15 adults who stutter (PDS group) and 15 age-matched control individuals to reveal the connectivity abnormalities associated with stuttering. We were also interested in exploring how the severity of stuttering varies across individuals to understand the compensatory mechanism of …
Quantification Of Marine Acoustic Environments, Dylan Charles Wilford
Quantification Of Marine Acoustic Environments, Dylan Charles Wilford
Master's Theses and Capstones
The soundscape is an acoustic environment made up of all sounds arriving at a receiver. A methodology for the analysis of soundscapes was developed in an attempt to facilitate efficient and accurate soundscape comparisons across time and space. The methodology included generating and combining results from a collection of traditional soundscape metrics, statistical measures, and acoustic indices that were selected to quantify several salient properties of marine soundscapes: amplitude, impulsiveness, periodicity, and uniformity. The metrics were calculated using approximately 30 hours using semi-continuous passive acoustic data gathered in seven unique acoustic environments. The calculated values for each candidate metric were …

Background: People with chronic shoulder pain have been shown to present with motor adaptations during arm movements. These adaptations may create abnormal physical stress on shoulder tendons and muscles. However, how and why these adaptations develop from the acute stage of pain is still not well-understood. Objective: To investigate motor adaptations following acute experimental shoulder pain during upper limb reaching. Methods: Forty participants were assigned to the Control or Pain group. They completed a task consisting of reaching targets in a virtual reality environment at three time points: (1) baseline (both groups pain-free), (2) experimental phase (Pain group experiencing acute …

Human neutrophil elastase (HNE) is a uniquely destructive serine protease with the ability to unleash a wave of proteolytic activity by destroying the inhibitors of other proteases. Although this phenomenon forms an important part of the innate immune response to invading pathogens, it is responsible for the collateral host tissue damage observed in chronic conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and in more acute disorders such as the lung injuries associated with COVID-19 infection. Previously, a combinatorially selected activity-based probe revealed an unexpected substrate preference for oxidised methionine, which suggests a link to oxida-tive pathogen clearance by neutrophils. …

Cripping The Welfare Queen: The Radical Potential Of Disability Politics, Jina B. Kim
Cripping The Welfare Queen: The Radical Potential Of Disability Politics, Jina B. Kim
English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications
Drawing together feminist- and queer-of-color critique with disability theory, this essay offers a literary-cultural reframing of the welfare queen in light of critical discourses of disability. It does so by taking up the discourse of dependency that casts racialized, low-income, and disabled populations as drains on the state, reframing this discourse as a potential site of coalition among antiracist, anticapitalist, and feminist disability politics. Whereas antiwelfare policy cast independence as a national ideal, this analysis of the welfare mother elaborates a version of disability and women-of-color feminism that not only takes dependency as a given but also mines the figure …
Doing Well By Doing Good? Strategic Competition And United Nations Peacekeeping, Bryce Loidolt
Doing Well By Doing Good? Strategic Competition And United Nations Peacekeeping, Bryce Loidolt
INSS Strategic Perspectives
The Joseph Biden administration’s Interim Strategic Guidance emphasizes the importance of ensuring that international organizations “continue to reflect the universal values, aspirations, and norms that have underpinned the UN [United Nations] system since its founding 75 years ago, rather than an authoritarian agenda.”1 In this context, several trends in competitor contributions to UN peacekeeping operations could be cause for alarm and warrant greater U.S. engagement. Although Washington remains the largest billpayer for these missions, both Russian and Chinese personnel contributions to UN peacekeeping have surpassed those of the United States. Chinese financial contributions are slowly increasing and, unlike the United …

The continued rise of Apple's macOS in both the home and workplace has led to a significant rise in the capabilities of both malware and attacker toolkits that target the operating system and its users. Over the last several years there have been numerous documented instances of macOS users being targeted by governments, intelligence agencies, and criminal groups, and the end results of these attacks were the victims having highly sophisticated malware installed on their systems. Unfortunately, the rise of these threats has not been met with an equal research and development effort by the memory forensics community. This has …

Validation Of A Single Channel Eeg For The Athlete: A Machine Learning Protocol To Accurately Detect Sleep Stages, Kayla Thompson, Kamil Celoch, Frankie Pizzo, Ana I. Fins, Jaime Tartar
Journal for Sports Neuroscience
There is a large and growing movement towards the use of wearable technologies for sleep assessment. This trend is largely due to the desire for comfortable, burden free, and inexpensive technology. In tandem, given the competitive nature of professional athletes enduring high training load, sleep is often jeopardized which can result in adverse outcomes. Wearable devices hold the promise of increasing the ease of monitoring sleep in athletes which can inform health and recovery status, as well as aid performance optimization. However, wearable devices typically lack sufficient validity to assess sleep – and especially sleep stages. To address this concern, …

Is Clinically Measured Knee Range Of Motion After Total Knee Arthroplasty ‘Good Enough?’: A Feasibility Study Using Wearable Inertial Measurement Units To Compare Knee Range Of Motion Captured During Physical Therapy Versus At Home, Ryan M. Chapman, Wayne E. Moschetti, Douglas W. Van Citters
Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Total knee arthroplasty is highly successful, in part due to range of motion (RoM) recovery. This is typically estimated goniometrically/visually by physical therapists (PTs) in the clinic, which is imprecise. Accordingly, a validated inertial measurement unit (IMU) method for capturing knee RoM was deployed assessing postoperative RoM both in and outside of the clinical setting. The study's objectives were to evaluate the feasibility of continuously capturing knee RoM pre-/post-op via IMUs, dividing data into PT/non-PT portions of each day, and comparing PT/non-PT metrics. We hypothesized IMU-based clinical knee RoM would differ from IMU-based knee RoM captured outside clinical settings. 10 …

Separating Preemption From The Subject Matter Analysis Of 35 U.S.C. § 101, Swartz, Rodney
Separating Preemption From The Subject Matter Analysis Of 35 U.S.C. § 101, Swartz, Rodney
Santa Clara Law Review
With what seems to be a fluke of history, the Supreme Court has developed a subject matter analysis framework embodied in 35 U.S.C. § 101 that relies on the preemption doctrine to justify invalidation. This Article establishes that preemption has a distinct objective that is more closely aligned with the written description framework of § 112 than with the subject matter eligibility framework of § 101. As a result of relying on preemption, the Court has created an arbitrary and difficult to apply test, resulting in a chasm between the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and courts that …
