Assessing The Water Quality Of Three Bar-Built Estuaries In The Central Coast Of California, Micaelina Sarmiento Martinez Sep 2021

Assessing The Water Quality Of Three Bar-Built Estuaries In The Central Coast Of California, Micaelina Sarmiento Martinez

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Estuaries are coastal confluences with innumerable ecosystem services. With the continuous change in land use including the increasing number of people moving to live in coastal areas and on-going agricultural operations, these coastal systems are being adversely impacted. Climate change is also negatively affecting estuaries. Subsequently, this research study assessed the water quality, monthly, at three different locations of three bar-built estuaries in the Central Coast of California. Water quality was evaluated by the change in chlorophyll-a, nitrogen, phosphorus, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductivity over the course of 19 months. The eutrophication potential and the role of open …

Working Memory Task Performance In Children With Sli: A Behavioral And Erp Study, Megan V. Mcveety Sep 2021

Working Memory Task Performance In Children With Sli: A Behavioral And Erp Study, Megan V. Mcveety

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In addition to language deficits, children with Specific Language Impairment often show deficits in tests of various aspects of working memory, including capacity, updating, and selective attention. The purpose of the present study is to examine the specific drivers of differences in working memory processing in 8–11 year-old children with and without SLI using behavioral and electrophysiological measures. Participants completed an n-back task with three working memory load conditions (0-back, 1-back, 2-back), with the addition of distractor trials at the 1-back and 2-back levels. The SLI group performed significantly less accurately across all task conditions. The children with SLI also …

The Behaviour Of Rare Earth Elements From South African Coal Fly Ash During Enrichment Processes: Wet, Magnetic Separation And Zeolitisation, Mero Lee Ursula Cornelius, Alechine Emmanuel Ameh, Chuks Paul Eze, Olanrewaju Fatoba, Asel Sartbaeva, Leslie Felicia Petrik Sep 2021

The Behaviour Of Rare Earth Elements From South African Coal Fly Ash During Enrichment Processes: Wet, Magnetic Separation And Zeolitisation, Mero Lee Ursula Cornelius, Alechine Emmanuel Ameh, Chuks Paul Eze, Olanrewaju Fatoba, Asel Sartbaeva, Leslie Felicia Petrik

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential raw materials in a variety of industries including clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and wind turbines. This places an ever-increasing demand on global rare earth element production. Coal fly ash (CFA) possesses appreciable levels of REEs. CFA, a waste by-product of coal combustion, is therefore a readily available source of REEs that does not require mining. CFA valorization to zeolites has been achieved via various synthesis pathways. This study aimed to evaluate one such pathway by monitoring how REEs partition during CFA processing by the wet, magnetic separation process and zeolitisation. South …

Resistive Switching Properties Of Zro2 Film By Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition For Non-Volatile Memory Applications, Aleksey A. Sivkov, Yuan Xing, Zoe Minden, Zhigang Xiao, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao Sep 2021

Resistive Switching Properties Of Zro2 Film By Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition For Non-Volatile Memory Applications, Aleksey A. Sivkov, Yuan Xing, Zoe Minden, Zhigang Xiao, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Resistive switching properties of nanoscale zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) thin film deposited by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) have been investigated. A resistive memory device has been formed with a 10-nm-thick ZrO2 film as an active switching layer sandwiched between an aluminum top electrode and a silver bottom electrode. Bipolar resistive switching characteristics were demonstrated by current–voltage measurements with a read memory window of 6.6 V, an ON/OFF current ratio of nearly 105 , and a retention time of 104 s. Current conduction at low resistance states follows Ohm's law while at a high-resistance state governed …

Understanding The Impact Of Intrinsic, Extrinsic, And Altruistic Motivation On Principal Persistence In An Urban School District: A Case Study, Kimberly Washington

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this case study was to understand the impact of intrinsic, extrinsic, and altruistic motivation on principal persistence in Aberdeen Public Schools (APS, pseudonym). Principal persistence is generally defined as a principal staying in each school for a longer period or the lack of change of a principal within a school. The theories guiding this study are Frederick Herzberg’s theory of work and motivation, Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and Self-determination theory. The study focused on the following central research question: What are principal descriptions of their efforts to persist in their administrative positions in Aberdeen Public Schools? …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenology qualitative inquiry was to understand the efficacy of the Basic Georgia Certified Emergency Manager Program curriculum on preparing local emergency managers in each of Georgia’s eight geographical regions for their role. Emergency managers are professionals tasked with helping communities and organizations to anticipate all hazards and undertake measures to deal with disasters (McEntire 200 7). Demands placed on local emergency managers have increased significantly since the turn of the century. Between 2002 and 2020, the number and frequency of disasters have dramatically increased, and Georgia's social and economic demographics have undergone significant changes, presenting …

Rotten Green Tests In Java, Pharo And Python, Vincent Aranega, Julien Delplanque, Matias Martinez, Andrew P. Black, Stéphane Ducasse, Anne Etien, Christopher Fuhrman, Guillermo Polito Sep 2021

Rotten Green Tests In Java, Pharo And Python, Vincent Aranega, Julien Delplanque, Matias Martinez, Andrew P. Black, Stéphane Ducasse, Anne Etien, Christopher Fuhrman, Guillermo Polito

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rotten Green Tests are tests that pass, but not because the assertions they contain are true: a rotten test passes because some or all of its assertions are not actually executed. The presence of a rotten green test is a test smell, and a bad one, because the existence of a test gives us false confidence that the code under test is valid, when in fact that code may not have been tested at all. This article reports on an empirical evaluation of the tests in a corpus of projects found in the wild. We selected approximately one hundred mature …

Fourth-Order Adjoint Sensitivity And Uncertainty Analysis Of An Oecd/Nea Reactor Physics Benchmark: I. Computed Sensitivities, Ruixian Fang, Dan Gabriel Cacuci Sep 2021

Fourth-Order Adjoint Sensitivity And Uncertainty Analysis Of An Oecd/Nea Reactor Physics Benchmark: I. Computed Sensitivities, Ruixian Fang, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This work extends the investigation of higher-order sensitivity and uncertainty analysis from 3rd-order to 4th-order for a polyethylene-reflected plutonium (PERP) OECD/NEA reactor physics benchmark. Specifically, by applying the 4th-order comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology (4th-CASAM) to the PERP benchmark, this work presents the numerical results of the most important 4th-order sensitivities of the benchmark’s total leakage response with respect to the benchmark’s 180 microscopic total cross sections, which includes 180 4th-order unmixed sensitivities and 360 4th-order mixed sensitivities corresponding to the largest 3rd-order ones. The numerical results obtained in this work reveal that the number of 4th-order relative sensitivities that …

Comparative Study Of Hermitian And Non-Hermitian Topological Dielectric Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Shuang Zhang, Ran Zhao, Zhihao Lan, Wei E.I. Sha Sep 2021

Comparative Study Of Hermitian And Non-Hermitian Topological Dielectric Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Shuang Zhang, Ran Zhao, Zhihao Lan, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of gain and loss on the band structures of a bulk topological dielectric photonic crystal (PC) with C6v symmetry and the PC-air-PC interface are studied based on first-principal calculation. To illustrate the importance of parity-time (PT) symmetry, three systems are considered, namely the PT-symmetric, PT-asymmetric, and lossy systems. We find that the system with gain and loss distributed in a PT symmetric manner exhibits a phase transition from a PT exact phase to a PT broken phase as the strength of the gain and loss increases, while for the PT-asymmetric and lossy systems, no such phase transition occurs. …

Physical-Based Training Data Collection Approach For Data-Driven Lithium-Ion Battery State-Of-Charge Prediction, Jie Li, Will Ziehm, Jonathan W. Kimball, Robert Landers, Jonghyun Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Data-Driven approaches for State of Charge (SOC) prediction have been developed considerably in recent years. However, determining the appropriate training dataset is still a challenge for model development and validation due to the considerably varieties of lithium-ion batteries in terms of material, types of battery cells, and operation conditions. This work focuses on optimization of the training data set by using simple measurable data sets, which is important for the accuracy of predictions, reduction of training time, and application to online estimation. It is found that a randomly generated data set can be effectively used for the training data set, …
