Elementary Students' Science Attitudes And Teachers' Implementation Of The Ngss Science Practices: A Mixed Methods Study, Michelle Laborn

Dissertations

It has been recorded in the literature that student science interest drops as students enter and transition to middle and high school. This dissertation takes up the areas of student science interest and the teaching of the science practices in the context of elementary education. This study seeks to understand student science interest in elementary students in the years before entering middle school where a drop of interest is frequently reported. It is hypothesized that an increased use or implementation of the NGSS science practices by classroom teachers would generate higher science interest in elementary students. In a framework of …

Challenging Patriarchy: How Romantasy Reshapes Gender Roles, Desire, And Female Agency, Carly Mankin '26 May 2026

Challenging Patriarchy: How Romantasy Reshapes Gender Roles, Desire, And Female Agency, Carly Mankin '26

Student Research

Romantic fantasy has become increasingly popular among women and offers a unique lens to examine how gender roles and sexual scripts shape perceptions of identity, desire, and empowerment. This analysis centers on the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, specifically the second book, A Court of Mist and Fury. Sexual scripts, role congruity theory, and gender role conflict theory are useful in analyzing how these books challenge traditional gender norms and redefine expectations of femininity, masculinity, and relationship dynamics. By highlighting what different forms of identity and intimacy can look like, romantasy moves beyond being solely an escape, …

Predicting Psychosis Through Speech: A Case For Nlp In Clinical Practice, Lydia Britton '27 May 2026

Predicting Psychosis Through Speech: A Case For Nlp In Clinical Practice, Lydia Britton '27

Student Research

Psychosis is difficult to identify in early stages; however, changes in speech and language offer insights and indicators of emerging symptomatology. This paper examines the potential for Natural Language Processing (NLP) and other computational linguistic techniques for improving the predicition of psychosis disorders through automated analysis of speech. Existing research shows that lingustic markers that are aligned with Formal Thought Disorder, including reduced semantic coherence, poverty of content, tangentiality, reduced syntactic complexity, and pragmatic deficits, can help to distinguish between individuals who are experiencing or at risk for psychosis from healthy controls. Traditional clinical assessments may have difficulty identifying and …

Simulation Of Post-Tensioned Clt Rocking Wall And Platform Structure Response Under Earthquake Lateral Loads With Simplified Equivalent Model, Yunxiang Ma, Qingli Dai, Da Huang, Miaomiao Li, Xiang Zhao

Michigan Tech Publications

The post-tensioned cross-laminated timber (CLT) rocking wall is a recently developed resilient CLT lateral force-resisting system with a self-centering feature. The structural responses of the systems with different designs need to be determined and evaluated efficiently to promote the development and standardization of industrial applications. This study developed a computationally efficient, component-assembled numerical model for post-tensioned cross-laminated timber (PT CLT) rocking walls that captures decompression, post-tension self-centering, and energy dissipation within a framework. The single wall model was assembled using nonlinear zero-length springs for the compression at the CLT bottom, truss bar element for the PT tendon, and elastic shell …

Investigating Affordable Indoor Mobile Lidar Sensing For Bim-Based Facility Management: A Usability And Condition Sensitivity Study, Amr Mousa, Ahmed Elyamany, Mohamed Nabawy

Civil Engineering

This paper analyzes how capture parameters affect indoor mobile LiDAR scan fitness for-purpose for BIM-based facilities management. Despite extensive research on geometric accuracy and automated modelling performance, limited work has systematically examined how acquisition conditions influence the practical usability of raw scans for BIM/FM applications. A controlled experimental investigation used an Apple iPhone 16 Pro's integrated LiDAR sensor to capture 36 indoor scans under twelve factorial combinations of scan speed, illumination level, and motion pattern. Each condition was repeated three times. Usability was assessed using several components,Fco a gate-based pass/fail criterion, enclosure geometry, openings, ceiling services, and geometric clarity using …

Grounding In Place And Space, Levi Anthony Walker May 2026

Grounding In Place And Space, Levi Anthony Walker

MFA in Visual Art

The foundation of Levi Walker’s artistic practice relies on the use of natural materials that reference the landscape. The materials within his sculptures, in combination with sculptural processes, create a conceptual language that is in conversation with the land and the ways that we engage with it as a community. As a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, his work addresses the relationship that Indigenous tribes have with the federal government, and the ways the tribe must navigate colonial systems in order to support their communities without erasing their identities or beliefs. Influenced by his upbringing, a strong …

A Kantian Guide To Understanding Agentic Ai And Its Ethical Consequences, Amelia Wang May 2026

A Kantian Guide To Understanding Agentic Ai And Its Ethical Consequences, Amelia Wang

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

The rapid emergence of Agentic AI, which are systems capable of autonomous, multi-step decision-making with minimal human oversight, has prompted growing discourse and concern regarding whether such systems possess a form of agency comparable to that of human beings, and subsequently, what ethical responsibilities ensue if they do. This thesis argues that many of the ethical risks surrounding Agentic AI stem from a fundamental misconception, which is the tendency to describe these systems using the language of agency ("deciding," "acting," "choosing") without examining whether they satisfy the philosophical conditions for genuine rational agency. Drawing on Immanuel Kant's Groundwork of the …

Ontario High School Teacher Perspectives On Failure: Bridging Policy And Practice, Dan Guadagnolo, Kelly Li, Klea Mosho, Megan Anderson, Nicole Laliberte, Fiona Rawle May 2026

Ontario High School Teacher Perspectives On Failure: Bridging Policy And Practice, Dan Guadagnolo, Kelly Li, Klea Mosho, Megan Anderson, Nicole Laliberte, Fiona Rawle

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study explores teacher perceptions of the role of failure in secondary school education. Our case study analysis, based on 23 interviews in Ontario, Canada, suggests secondary school teachers understand failure as a core element of the learning process. However, teachers do not feel they can easily use failure as a pedagogical tool. Teachers perceive Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines regarding student success to have created an institutional culture within which student failure is administratively burdensome and is framed as external to the learning process. These success narratives in government assessment guidelines have created a situation wherein teachers often feel …

Feminist Solidarities And An Ethos Of Care: Reflecting On Faculty Marshal Experiences At The University Of Denver, Andrea L. Stanton, Dheepa Sundaram May 2026

Feminist Solidarities And An Ethos Of Care: Reflecting On Faculty Marshal Experiences At The University Of Denver, Andrea L. Stanton, Dheepa Sundaram

Gatherings

Spring 2024 witnessed student encampment protests around the US and world protesting the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Israeli occupation in Palestine. The University of Denver (DU) became part of this movement in April when students established a Palestine solidarity encampment, permitted by DU's then-current freedom of expression policies. To protect students' free speech rights, we trained as marshals alongside faculty and staff colleagues to ensure student rights, peacefully de-escalate tensions, and keep all community members safe. This essay adopts an autoethnographic approach grounded in our lived experiences and care-based interactions with campus and broader community. Taking an intersectional approach …

Knock To Disrupt, Knock To Make Visible: Writing And Teaching About Architecture And Palestine Amidst The Ongoing Genocide, Nama'a Qudah May 2026

Knock To Disrupt, Knock To Make Visible: Writing And Teaching About Architecture And Palestine Amidst The Ongoing Genocide, Nama'a Qudah

Gatherings

In his seminal novel Men in the Sun (1970), Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani poses a haunting question: “Why didn’t they knock on the walls of the water tank?”.  This paper reflects on that question and how it became the compass guiding my writing and teaching about Architecture and Palestine amidst the ongoing genocide. Knocking here is more than an act of refusal; it is a demand to rupture domination, insisting on justice and on noise against the enclosures that prefer quiet compliance. Kanafani’s question echoes beyond fiction, exposing the asymmetry between oppressor and oppressed, and the violence embedded not only …

A Hell Of A Fix: Television And Cultural Transfer During The Iran Hostage Crisis, Grace A. Chapnik May 2026

A Hell Of A Fix: Television And Cultural Transfer During The Iran Hostage Crisis, Grace A. Chapnik

Madison Historical Review

During the Iran Hostage Crisis, television served as a central method of communication between Iran and the United States. Ultimately, saturation of American networks with coverage of the Crisis had a profound impact on the administration of President Jimmy Carter, as a "cultural transfer" of Iranian messaging led the American populace to question their President's abilities to challenge Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Carter was portrayed in the American media as a floundering leader unable to counter the authority of the new Iranian regime, leading the President's popularity to plummet and severely harming his prospects for re-election in the 1980 presidential …
