Background: Harms from opioid use disorder (OUD) cause significant morbidity and mortality, responsible for over 107,000 overdose-related deaths in 2022 and igniting an urgency to expand access to OUD-related care to new settings such as primary care. A critical element of successful OUD care is engaging patients throughout the OUD care continuum and ongoing retention, yet OUD care engagement rates in outpatient settings are hugely variable, ranging from 4%-70% for initial (14-30 day) treatment engagement, and markedly diminishing over time. The barriers that patients cite to engagement point to the need to deliver more patient-centered OUD care, yet little …

Macrophages are innate immune cells that patrol tissues and are the first responders to detect infection. They orchestrate the host immune response in eliminating invading pathogens and the subsequent transition from inflammation to tissue repair. Macrophage dysfunction contributes to age-related pathologies, including low-grade inflammation in advanced age that is termed "inflammaging." Our laboratory has previously identified that macrophage expression of a fatty acid desaturase, stearoyl-CoA desaturase 2 (SCD2), declines with age. Herein, we delineate the precise cellular effects of SCD2 deficiency in murine macrophages. We found that deletion of

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has been an immense threat to global public health and has also had a negative socioeconomic impact worldwide. However, although the pandemic is now under control, it has demonstrated that society is unprepared to use analysis methods that are applicable to various types of viruses nor apply new therapies to prevent infections, considering the extensive time needed for vaccine development. The use of nanomaterial-based diagnostics and therapeutics can provide essential strategies for both virus detection and treatment. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are the nanomaterials most commonly used to enhance virus …

Writing As A Mean To Rehabilitate The Traumatized Self In Vivre Vite By Brigitte Giraud, Nadia Naboulsi Iskandarani
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
In her novel Vivre vite, Brigitte Giraud writes the story of a disaster that obsesses her: on June 22, 1999; her companion Claude died in a motorcycle accident in Lyon. This vehicle, a powerful and dangerous Honda, was prohibited on Japanese territory and was reserved for export to Europe. It did not belong to Claude, but to the writer's brother. She was only able to return to the drama that inhabited her in 2022, that is to say twenty-three years after Claude's death. The reader cannot help but wonder about this long silence and why this return to the minutiae …

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. It manifests in different forms, with type 1 and type 2 being the most prevalent. Type 1 diabetes results from the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells, whereas type 2 diabetes primarily stems from insulin resistance. Despite advancements in treatment, accurate detection and prediction of diabetes remain challenging. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management and prevention of complications. Another obstacle lies in interpreting vast amounts of health data, including DNA sequencing, which poses difficulties for healthcare professionals in identifying relevant patterns and associations. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise …

The Relaying Network In Free-Space Optical Communications Using Optical Amplifiers In Cascaded Configuration, Ucuk Darusalam, Arockia Bazil Raj, Fitri Yuli Zulkifli, Purnomo Sidi Priambodo, Eko Tjipto Rahardjo
Makara Journal of Technology
Optical relaying is the best technique to implement free-space optical (FSO) communications as a terrestrial platform. However, atmospheric turbulence (AT) limits the optical-propagation path length. In this study, the implementation of some optical amplifiers (OAs) in cascaded configuration, namely, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, semiconductor OAs, and Raman amplifiers (RAs), are investigated through simulation. This study aims to search for the maximum link distance of an optical propagation and enhance the FSO performance caused by each configuration of OAs. The optical relaying network consists of three nodes, with each node designed with a space of several kilometers under the influence of AT. …
Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment Of Skin: Penetration Into Hair Follicles, Kseniia Konina, Theresa A. Freeman, Mark J. Kushner
Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment Of Skin: Penetration Into Hair Follicles, Kseniia Konina, Theresa A. Freeman, Mark J. Kushner
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Sterilization of skin prior to surgery is challenged by the reservoir of bacteria that resides in hair follicles. Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) have been proposed as a method to treat and deactivate these bacteria as atmospheric plasmas are able to penetrate into structures and crevices with dimensions similar to those found in hair follicles. In this paper, we discuss results from a computational investigation of an APPJ sustained in helium flowing into ambient air, and incident onto a layered dielectric similar to human skin in which there are idealized hair follicles. We found that, depending on the location of …

Improving Irrigant Flow Characteristics For Enhanced Root Canal Therapy: A Numerical Study, Bibek Banjaday
Masters Theses
This numerical study investigates the flow characteristics within a root canal during a manual endodontic treatment. To underscore the difference in root canal geometry, a simplified root canal (frustum of a cone) and a more complex (realistic) root canal geometry were considered. The needle utilized in all simulations is a side-vented 30G KerrHaweIrrigation Probe, KerrHawe SA, Bioggio, Switzerland. For both root canal geometries, the effect of variation of fluid inlet velocity, needle insertion depth, and needle tilt angle on flow characteristics was examined via velocity contours, turbulent intensity, wall shear stress, and streamline and vector plots. The fluid was Sodium …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Subsurface geologic formations such as depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, deep saline aquifers and shale formations have been considered promising targets for carbon dioxide and hydrogen storage. A solid understanding of the interfacial properties of multiphase systems, including binary (pure gas-water) and ternary (gas mixtures and water), is vital to assess for reliability and storage capacity of the geological formations. However, most previous experimental and simulation studies for interfacial properties have mainly focused on binary systems at low-medium pressure. Only a few experimental and simulation studies investigated the interfacial tension at high pressure (above 20 MPa) for the CO2-CH4 …

Valuing Social Data, Amanda Parsons, Salomé Viljoen
Law & Economics Working Papers
Social data production is a unique form of value creation that characterizes informational capitalism. Social data production also presents critical challenges for the various legal regimes that are encountering it. This Article provides legal scholars and policymakers with the tools to comprehend this new form of value creation through two descriptive contributions. First, it presents a theoretical account of social data, a mode of production which is cultivated and exploited for two distinct (albeit related) forms of value: prediction value and exchange value. Second, it creates and defends a taxonomy of three “scripts” that companies follow to build up and …

Accomplishments Of Endwall Contouring On Heat Transfer In A Passage Of A Turbine Blade, Kozhikkatil Sunil Arjun, Tide Porathoor Sunny, Narayanan Biju
Makara Journal of Technology
The study explores axisymmetric endwall contouring with emphasis on the design of novel endwalls capable of heat load reduction. Optimizations with parameterization numerically determined by the endwall of flat shape led to the endwall of the contoured shape with substantial depletion of heat transfer in the passage of the vane. Heat transfer attributes for the generated contoured endwalls were analyzed for the exit Reynolds number of 2 × 106 . Endwall three-dimensional contouring resulted in remarkable changes in secondary flow vortices, jet-to-secondary flow interaction, and film cooling effectiveness on the flat endwall. The results pointed out that the axisymmetric convergent …
