Toward Energy Transformation: Intelligent Decision-Making Model Based On Uncertainty Neutrosophic Theory, Mona Mohamed, Nissreen El-Saber
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
There has been an increasing tendency for the generation of energy from diverse renewable resources because of the application of contemporary pollution mitigation and justification regulations. Precisely a consequence, choosing the best renewable energy source might be considered a challenging issue given the complexity of the future conditions in any society. Environmental, economic, social, and technical aspects are merely some of the factors that are taken into consideration while evaluating renewable energy sources (RnESs). The suitable RES selection problem, which relies on ambiguous and imprecise data, is also influenced by a variety of circumstances. Hence, this study constructs multi-stages intelligent …

Interrogating And Genetically Improving Drought Tolerance In The Oilseed Winter Cover Crop, Pennycress ( Thlaspi Arvense L. )., Carol S. Kiam Assato
Theses and Dissertations
Drought damage to crops is a significant threat to food security and a growing problem due to climate change. Amongst all abiotic stresses, drought is the most impactful on soil biota and crop productivity. According to the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), in 2020, 40% of the United States was under drought, and it is predicted that this number will continue to rise in the forthcoming years due to global warming. Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) is a member of the Brassicaceae family related to canola and Arabidopsis that is rapidly being developed as an oilseed-producing winter cash cover crop …

Structure-From-Motion Derived Snow Cover In Burned Forests Of The Western Oregon Cascades, Siobhan Ciafone
Structure-From-Motion Derived Snow Cover In Burned Forests Of The Western Oregon Cascades, Siobhan Ciafone
Dissertations and Theses
Forest fire occurrence in the western US has increased rapidly since the 1980s, and most western US fires occur in the seasonal snow zone. Burned forests influence snow accumulation and melt patterns for years following fire, and understanding drivers of variability in snow cover across a burned landscape at the basin-scale is necessary for accurate hazard prediction and water resource forecasting. Basin-scale surveys of snowpack are possible with remote sensing, but accurate sensing methods such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) are often cost-prohibitive. In the last decade, structure-from-motion (SfM), an optical remote sensing technique, has emerged as an affordable …

In the automotive business environment, with intense competition among firms and with the added element of what is known as the “chips or semiconductor shortage,” adequate demand and supply chain planning is not forthright as semiconductors are essential to fabricating printed circuit boards, which in turn are necessary to control numerous computerized requirements of the vehicle. This paper presents a manufacturing postponement framework concerted with an ensemble forecasting method based on multi-layer Long Short-Term Memory networks combined with a bagging approach to predict highly fluctuating non-stationary printed circuit boards demand data in a business offering electronics manufacturing services to the …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Carbon−halogen bond cleavage has been studied extensively for many years as a simple electrosynthesis step in the formation of more complex natural products. Reduction of halogenated phenols has received less attention, in part, due to the lowered faradaic efficiency resulting from the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we report the electroreduction of a series of brominated phenols through a homogeneous electrocatalytic (EC′) mechanism. Beginning with the structurally simple 2-bromophenol, we use foot-of-the-wave analysis to determine optimal catalysts. Nickel (II) salen requires the lowest overpotential for C−Br reduction and was used across all substrates. Chronoamperometric studies and density functional theory calculations …

The rapid melt of snow and sea ice during the Arctic summer provides a significant source of low-salinity meltwater to the surface ocean on the local scale. The accumulation of this meltwater on, under, and around sea ice floes can result in relatively thin meltwater layers in the upper ocean. Due to the small-scale nature of these upper-ocean features, typically on the order of 1 m thick or less, they are rarely detected by standard methods, but are nevertheless pervasive and critically important in Arctic summer. Observations during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition …

Paper-based biosensors are a potential paradigm of sensitivity achieved via microporous spreading/microfluidics, simplicity, and affordability. In this paper, we develop decorated paper with graphene and conductive polymer (herein referred to as graphene conductive polymer paper-based sensor or GCPPS) for sensitive detection of biomolecules. Planetary mixing resulted in uniformly dispersed graphene and conductive polymer ink, which was applied to laser-cut Whatman filter paper substrates. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy showed strong attachment of conductive polymer-functionalized graphene to cellulose fibers. The GCPPS detected dopamine and cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in the ranges of 12.5–400 …
Feature-Oriented Hardware Design, Justin Deters
Feature-Oriented Hardware Design, Justin Deters
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The sea of hardware features is vast. Hardware features range from things as simple and small as a bypass line in the datapath of a processor to as large and complicated as a cache or accelerator. Qualitatively, hardware designers choose what functionality the design will have through the instruction set architecture (ISA). Will the processor support floating-point instructions? Will the processor's applications require SIMD or cryptography instructions? These considerations lie on a spectrum from limited or specialized ISAs to full featured general processing ISAs. This spectrum intersects with the quantitative spectrum of the microarchitecture. A processor must reach the die …
Stem Cell And Drug Delivery Systems For Promoting Angiogenesis And Myogenesis In Ischemic Limbs, Ning Gao
Stem Cell And Drug Delivery Systems For Promoting Angiogenesis And Myogenesis In Ischemic Limbs, Ning Gao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a widespread atherosclerotic disorder affecting more than 200 million people globally, with critical limb ischemia (CLI) being its most severe manifestation. Stem cell therapy has been a promising CLI treatment, but the harsh conditions in an ischemic limb, such as hypoxia, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) stress, and the lack of a support matrix, trophic factors, and nutrients, all compromise therapeutic efficacy by reducing the survival rate or function of transplanted cells. This thesis presents various biomaterial systems designed for stem cell and drug delivery to improve the cell microenvironment and promote angiogenesis and myogenesis …

Patients with neurocognitive disorders often battle sleep disturbances. Kynurenic acid is a tryptophan metabolite of the kynurenine pathway implicated in the pathology of these illnesses. Modest increases in kynurenic acid, an antagonist at glutamatergic and cholinergic receptors, result in cognitive impairments and sleep dysfunction. We explored the hypothesis that inhibition of the kynurenic acid synthesising enzyme, kynurenine aminotransferase II, may alleviate sleep disturbances. At the start of the light phase, adult male and female Wistar rats received systemic injections of either: (i) vehicle; (ii) kynurenine (100 mg kg−1; i.p.); (iii) the kynurenine aminotransferase II inhibitor, PF-04859989 (30 mg kg−1; s.c.); …

Quantum Information Processing Via Dissipation Engineering In Superconducting Circuit Platform, Yunzhao Wang
Quantum Information Processing Via Dissipation Engineering In Superconducting Circuit Platform, Yunzhao Wang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the application of dissipative processes in quantum information processing. Conventionally, dissipative processes bring noises into quantum circuits and hinder the ability of computation. Here we explore several ways to engineer and utilize dissipative processes, as a novel approach for quantum information processing. In a single superconducting qutrit, we observe the topological behaviour of the geometric phase under the existence of dephasing. In a manybody superconducting qutrit processor, we design the preparation and stabilization of the AKLT state. By the above examples, we demonstrate the the power of dissipative processes as a novel and promising approach for quantum …

Pain Transformed: The Salutary Effects Of Suffering In Eighteenth-Century France, Anne Seul
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
At the center of Pain Transformed lies the human body and the experience of suffering, particularly in regard to the unexpectedly beneficial side-effects of pain. I examine depictions of suffering in the literature of eighteenth-century France, a period best understood as one of spirited debate and marked innovation: by way of personal letters, literary and philosophical works, coffee shops, and salons, intellectuals interacted with one another’s ideas in an attempt to redefine society. My focus is on a series of works that merge preoccupations with the body—the physiological processes of how and why people feel, both physically and emotionally—with the …

Assessment Of Forest Stand Characteristics And Environmental Conditions On Soil Burn Severity And Post-Wildfire Flooding In The Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, Raquel L. Valdez
Civil Engineering ETDs
Wildfire is a natural disturbance in forest ecosystems but has the potential to drastically change watershed conditions, leaving them highly vulnerable to post-wildfire hazards. High severity fires can significantly affect soil and landscape interactions, resulting in decreased evaporation and infiltration and increased runoff in the newly exposed soil surfaces. Most post-wildfire research focuses on reactive solutions. However, the time between wildfires and post-wildfire hazards is growing closer in margin. Therefore, assessing post-wildfire risks, pre-fire is helpful when assessing fire severity and is valuable to resource managers for pre-wildfire management, planning, and mitigation. This research is in the Upper Gallinas Watershed …

Identity Management Pki System Using Blockchain, Mohamed Abdel Fattah Abdel Baki Awad
Theses and Dissertations
Identity management is one of the most important topics in the security field. Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is the most commonly used approach in legally identity management systems. PKI systems have many centralized services that might affect the availability and trustworthiness of the system. Issues related to certificate verification methods such as Certificate Revocation List (CRL) and Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) can be avoided if blockchain is used. Blockchain is a decentralized trusted system where data can only be appended to a public ledger. Edits are not allowed in blockchain. Blockchain consists of several nodes all of them have …
