Exploring Spatiotemporal Impacts Of A Cemetery On Urban Water Quality In A Headwater Watershed With Varied Human-Built Infrastructure, Samuel Nesheim
Exploring Spatiotemporal Impacts Of A Cemetery On Urban Water Quality In A Headwater Watershed With Varied Human-Built Infrastructure, Samuel Nesheim
Theses - ALL
Urban watersheds receive pollutant inputs from a variety of sources including industrial discharges, atmospheric deposition, road salt, and stormwater runoff. The limited presence of riparian zones exacerbates the uptake and degradation of pollutants in these urban watersheds. Cemeteries are integral components to urban ecosystems, providing benefits and ecosystem services similar to urban parks. However, studies have shown that burial products can export nutrients, trace elements, and other contaminants to nearby groundwater and soils, presumably leading to surface water contamination. In this study I focus on Meadowbrook Creek, an urban headwater stream in Syracuse, New York, which has shown significant nitrate …

Introduction. To reduce the stream of solid waste going to landfills, innovative means for beneficial use are essential. The diversity and volume of organic wastes pose singular problems and opportunities for recovery and circularity. Common processes for organics include conversion to biofuels and carbonization to biochar, typically done by torrefaction (dry pyrolysis). Research on biochar explores its potential as pollutant adsorbent, agricultural or polluted soil amendment, biofuel (directly or as feedstock), and for carbon sequestration (Ighalo et al., 2022; Cavali et al., 2023). Recently, other processes at lower temperatures such as hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) offer new possibilities (Seshadri et al., …

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications
Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women worldwide, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed to assist doctors in identifying breast cancer on ultrasound images. In this paper, we propose a novel fuzzy relative-position-coding (FRPC) Transformer to classify breast ultrasound (BUS) images for breast cancer diagnosis. The proposed FRPC Transformer utilizes the self-attention mechanism of Transformer networks combined with fuzzy relative-position-coding to capture global and local features of the BUS images. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on one benchmark dataset and compared with those obtained by …

Small-Scale Testing Of Passive Fire Protection Systems For Structures On The Wildland-Urban Interface, Makenzie Wilson, Thomas H. Fletcher, Taylor J. Sorensen
Faculty Publications
The average intensity and frequency of wildland fires have been on the rise over the years due to climate change. This, in combination with recent expansion and growth of rural areas, has led to an increased risk of wildfire damage for structures in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). This paper proposes a permanent passive fire protection system that is built into the structure. A flame-resistant material would be attached to the sheathing underneath the roofing and siding material. This system would allow the easily replaceable exterior components of the structure to burn while leaving the interior of the structure protected. Small-scale …

In buildings, ventilation, or rather, a lack of airtightness facilitates air leaks, from the outside to the inside and vice versa, and is not controlled. Cold air enters through the enclosure, and warm air is lost to the outdoors, due to the poor hermeticity of the facades, roofs, carpentry, ducts, etc. In order to quantify the airtightness in multi-family dwellings in Madrid, 151 blower door tests have been carried out in multi-family dwellings built in different periods whose execution has been regulated by the UNE-EN 13829 standard. Through its quantification by an n50 value, the average values of …

Better Models For High-Stakes Tasks, Jacob Ryan Epifano
Better Models For High-Stakes Tasks, Jacob Ryan Epifano
Theses and Dissertations
The intersection of machine learning and healthcare has the potential to transform medical diagnosis, treatment, and research. Machine learning models can analyze vast amounts of medical data and identify patterns that may be too complex for human analysis. However, one of the major challenges in this field is building trust between users and the model. Due to things like high false alarm rate and the black box nature of machine learning models, patients and medical professionals need to understand how the model arrives at its recommendations. In this work, we present several methods that aim to improve machine learning models …

Agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) are struggling to achieve sustainability in the face of increasing social, environmental, and economic challenges. Industry 4.0 technologies are widely deployed to monitor, assess, and analyze their operational process, and thereby drive sustainable value. This study adopts a hybrid approach to analyze the drivers of industry 4.0 technology deployment to achieve AFSC sustainability. Thematic analysis of 24 interviews was carried out to identify 13 drivers, and these were used as inputs into the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP), total interpretive structural modeling (TISM), and fuzzy cross-impact matrix multiplications applied to classification (MICMAC). The results show that …
Noise Reduction In The Obstetric Operating Room, Maddy Schroeder, Meghan Woodham
Noise Reduction In The Obstetric Operating Room, Maddy Schroeder, Meghan Woodham
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student Projects
Noise is a significant problem in the operating room with numerous negative impacts physically, mentally, and emotionally for both healthcare workers and patients. In particular, the obstetric operating room is the noisiest operating room in the hospital. The majority of patients in the obstetric operating room do not receive sedation medications and remain fully awake throughout the procedure; thus, they are fully aware of the noise levels surrounding them during their procedures. Elevated noise levels impair communication between providers and decrease satisfaction scores among patients and providers. Noise reduction strategies, including educating staff about the importance of noise reduction, have …

Consequences And Incentives Of Fair Learning, Andrew Estornell
Consequences And Incentives Of Fair Learning, Andrew Estornell
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
As algorithmic decision-making systems become increasingly entrenched in human-centric domains such as hiring and lending, it is crucial that these systems do not perpetuate historical bias or unfairly discriminate against sensitive demographics. However, in these domains, considering group fairness as the sole factor often leads to two significant consequences: 1) incentivizing individuals to strategically alter their behavior to obtain desired outcomes (e.g., hiding debt to qualify for a loan), and 2) achieving fairness at the expense of individual welfare (e.g., equalizing lending rates between groups by offering fewer total loans). We explore these consequences from both theoretical and empirical perspectives …
Learning In Large Interactive Environments, Hai S. Le
Learning In Large Interactive Environments, Hai S. Le
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In both Planning and Reinforcement Learning, an interactive environment is a dynamic system with which an agent interacts to achieve its goals. In planning, the agent uses its knowledge of the environment to generate a plan offline and then executes it in the interactive environment, adapting if necessary. In reinforcement learning, the agent learns and refines its policy while actively engaging with the environment, receiving feedback in the form of rewards or penalties, and balancing exploration and exploitation. However, when the environment becomes large and complex, the number of possible states and actions can become overwhelming. These are referred to …

An Experimental And Phenomenological Investigation Of Size And Charge Of Aerosolized Lunar Dust, Abhay Vidwans
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A new wave of lunar exploration is underway. The Artemis program aims to place humans on the Moon for the first time since the 1972 Apollo 17 mission. The main objective of the Artemis program is to enable sustained presence on the Moon. A significant inhibitor to such a sustained presence on the Moon is lunar dust. The fine, electrostatically-charged dust mobilizes through various anthropogenic and natural mechanisms, all of which are poorly understood, and adheres to nearly every surface with which it comes into contact. Hence, to ensure nominal long-term operation on the lunar surface, extensive measures must be …
Enhanced Shortwave Absorption And Rapid Covid-19 Spread: A Tale Of Two Aerosol-Driven Impacts, Payton Beeler
Enhanced Shortwave Absorption And Rapid Covid-19 Spread: A Tale Of Two Aerosol-Driven Impacts, Payton Beeler
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Aerosols have a major influence on Earth’s climate and cause adverse health effects by degrading ambient air quality. Aerosols impact Earth’s climate directly, by scattering and absorbing incoming shortwave radiation, and indirectly by altering cloud optical properties, cloud formation, and precipitation. Uncertainties in our understanding of these processes limit our current knowledge about the effect of aerosols on Earth’s climate. Poor air quality is globally the largest environmental health risk. Epidemiological studies have uncovered clear relationships of gaseous pollutants and particulate matter (PM) with adverse health outcomes, including increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. However, the effects of PM …

A Multi-Scale Feature Attention Image Recognition Algorithm, Xin Ming Yuan, Ang Ling Weay, Sellappan Palaniappan
Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering
The success of image classification using small samples is contingent on neural network models' capability to derive image representations from the data. A proposed solution is a small-sample image classification system that leverages attention mechanisms and meta-learning to capture more comprehensive image information. Due to its ability to efficiently suppress irrelevant characteristics and accentuate pertinent ones, this technique may extract more robust multiscale features and enhance classification performance through meta-learning.In this paper, the effectiveness of the multi-scale attention network is verified on two datasets, namely, Mini-ImageNet and Tiered-ImageNet, and the accuracy of the method is 58.54% for 5-way 1shot and …

Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering
Due to the COVID -19 pandemic, MOOCs have become a popular form of learning for college students. However, unlike traditional face-to-face courses, MOOCs offer little faculty supervision, which may result in students being insufficiently motivated to continue learning, ultimately leading to a high dropout rate. Consequently, the problem of high dropout rates in MOOCs requires urgent attention in MOOC research. Predicting dropout rates is the first step to address this problem, and MOOCs have a large amount of behavioral data that can be used for such predictions. Most existing models for predicting MOOC dropout based on behavioral data assign equal …
