Aryanization Bureaucrats In Post-Holocaust Romania, Stefan Cristian Ionescu

History Faculty Articles and Research

This article investigates the post-war life trajectories and careers of eight Aryanization (»Romanianization«) bureaucrats who were involved in the persecution and dispossession of Jews during the pro-Nazi Antonescu regime (September 1940–August 1944). While many of them were removed from the civil service, became unemployed, went into hiding, or were arrested, others thrived – at least temporarily – thanks to their skilful navigation of the post-Antonescu transition, their highlevel connections with the political establishment, and the ability to claim certain merits for their behavior before August 1944, either as victims of or by resisting against the Antonescu regime. However, most of …

An Improved Current Differential Protection Scheme For Annular Active Distribution Networks, Keyan Liu, Xueshun Ye, Zhao Li, Lai Wei, Bo Li

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

In order to improve the power supply reliability and the source acceptance capacity of distribution networks, the active ring network has become one main development trend of the distribution network. However, the connection of numerous distributed power sources will impact the power flow and fault characteristics, and thus reduce the performance of the traditional three‑stage current protection scheme. In this regard, an improved current differential protection scheme is proposed for annular active distribution networks in this paper. Firstly, the expressions for the relationship between the fault currents inside and outside the annular active distribution network are derived, and thus the …

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

Mechanical defects of gas insulated switchgear (GIS) may occur in the process of assembly and long‑term operation. Detecting and diagnosing mechanical defects is of great significance to ensure the reliable operation of GIS. At present, scholars have carried out a large number of vibration signal detection. However, the result analysis is mostly time‑frequency analysis based on FFT (fast Fourier transform), and the diagnostic methods for vibration‑signal feature extraction under different typical mechanical defects is deficient. Therefore, based on the basic principle that frequency characteristics differences exists in the vibration signals of different typical mechanical defects, the method adopting EMD‑FFT joint …

A Hybrid Modulation Strategy For Mmc With Controllable Quantization Error, Jing Chen, Tao Zhao, You Xu, Yibin Tao, Chunlin Wang, Quan Sun

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

Due to the low voltage level in the medium and low voltage distribution network, the number of modular multilevel converter (MMC) sub‑modules is also small. Therefore, the modulation strategy of MMC with few sub‑modules MMC has an important impact on the performance of the MMC system. In order to improve the total harmonic distortion (THD) of output waveform under nearest‑level modulation and reduce large switching loss under carrier phase‑shift modulation of the few‑sub‑module MMC system, a quantization error setting method is proposed for the minority module MMC system under nearest level approximation modulation. The quantization error is a new MMC …

Machine Learning And Causality For Interpretable And Automated Decision Making, Maria Lentini

Theses and Dissertations

This abstract explores two key areas in decision science: automated and interpretable decision making. In the first part, we address challenges related to sparse user interaction data and high item turnover rates in recommender systems. We introduce a novel algorithm called Multi-View Interactive Collaborative Filtering (MV-ICTR) that integrates user-item ratings and contextual information, improving performance, particularly for cold-start scenarios. In the second part, we focus on Student Prescription Trees (SPTs), which are interpretable decision trees. These trees use a black box "teacher" model to predict counterfactuals based on observed covariates. We experiment with a Bayesian hierarchical binomial regression model as …

A Probabilistic View Of Protein Stability, Conformational Specificity, And Design, Jacob A. Stern, Tyler J. Free, Kimberlee L. Stern, Spencer Gardiner, Nicholas A. Dalley, Bradley Charles Bundy, Joshua L. Price, David Wingate, Dnnis Della Corte

Faculty Publications

Various approaches have used neural networks as probabilistic models for the design of protein sequences. These "inverse folding" models employ different objective functions, which come with trade-offs that have not been assessed in detail before. This study introduces probabilistic definitions of protein stability and conformational specificity and demonstrates the relationship between these chemical properties and the p(stucture|seq) Boltzmann probability objective. This links the Boltzmann probability objective function to experimentally verifiable outcomes. We propose a novel sequence decoding algorithm, referred to as “BayesDesign”, that leverages Bayes’ Rule to maximize the p(stucture|seq) objective instead of the p(seq|structure) objective common in inverse folding …
