Early Visions Bucket
"Bernard Romans (b.1720) was born in the Netherlands, emigrated to America around 1757, and after a life of some controversy, died at about the age of 64. Romans, who spent sixteen years in North America (not all times, places, and activities accurately recorded), demonstrated his broad range of experiences with A Concise Natural History of East and West Florida (1775)."

Joshua Scottow Papers
This edition of A Narrative of the Planting of the Massachusets Colony Anno 1628 is based on the first edition published in Boston in 1694. The spelling, orthography, punctuation, and capitalization of the original have been retained; only obvious typographical errors have been corrected. Scottow's Narrative is the sequel to Old Mens Tears for their Own Declensions, published three years earlier. It is an expansion of the argument that God and history are being unkind to New England because its churches have strayed from the strict practice of the unanimously-minded early founders of the Congregational Way. Scottow treats of …

Electronic Texts in American Studies
Lion Gardener (1599-1663) was an English military engineer, formerly in the service of the prince of Orange, who was hired by members of the Connecticut Company in 1635 to oversee construction of fortifications for their new colony. On arriving in Connecticut in early 1636, his first assignment was to finish and garrison Saybrook Fort, at the mouth of the Connecticut River. In August 1636, the area was visited by a punitive military expedition from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, led by John Endicott, intent upon intimidating the Pequot and Niantic tribes and demanding delivery of the killers of a group of …

A Description Of New England, John Smith
Zea E-Books in American Studies
John Smith (1580-1631) made one voyage to the coast of Massachusetts and Maine in 1614, and attempted a second one the following year, only to be captured by French pirates and detained for several months near the Azores before escaping and making his way back to England. This book is the story of these two voyages.
Smith went to the coasts of America north of Virginia to explore the opportunities for fisheries, fur trading, and settlement. Smith was a veteran soldier, sailor, traveller, explorer, cartographer, and colonist: he had fought the Spanish in France and Italy, the Turks in Hungary …

Parents' Interests And Abilities As Sources Of Young Children's Everyday Learning Opportunities, Carl J. J. Dunst 4320065
Parents' Interests And Abilities As Sources Of Young Children's Everyday Learning Opportunities, Carl J. J. Dunst 4320065
Journal of Family Strengths
Findings from a national survey of parents’ strengths (personal interests and individual abilities) and how interests and abilities were used as sources of young children’s everyday learning opportunities are reported. The participants were 368 parents of young children birth to 6 years of age residing in 49 of the 50 United States. Participants were asked to indicate if any of 70 everyday activities were personal interests or individual abilities, if their youngest children were routinely involved in the activities, and if involved, if their children learned new behavior or skills. Data analysis was guided by a transactional, participation-based paradigm where …

Toward A Fair Transactive Energy Market: A Deeplearning Based Energy Consumption Prediction Model, Yuka Hatori
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
The application of machine learning is vast and quickly spreading across disciplines because of its versatile utility. By nature, machine learning implementations can quickly be obfuscated and ultimately introduce and perpetuate discriminatory practices, which leads to the issue of fairness. Transactive energy and the distribution of energy management technologies allow for new participants, meaning individual households and entities smaller than large energy providers, to enter the market to buy and sell energy. Machine learning has potential for meaningful use in many aspects of the transactive energy market process, and we focus on the specific aspect of how individual households can …

Studying Properties Of Xenon Doped Argon And Developing Optical Simulation Techniques For The Legend Collaboration, A Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment, Neil Christopher Mcfadden Dr
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process in which two neutrons decay to two protons, producing two electrons but no electron antineutrinos. The LEGEND collaboration will search for this decay in 76Ge. To improve the argon active veto for LEGEND-1000, xenon doped argon was explored as an alternative active volume. Simulations using argon doped with 10 ppm xenon and pure liquid argon were used to predict the light yield from cosmic muons in a 100 liter cryogenic vessel. The simulations predicted that xenon doping would yield 1.83+/-0.02 more light, while an increase of 1.81+/-0.05 was measured. From …

Wearable Electrochemical Sensors For Monitoring Performance Athletes, Kevin J. Fraser, Vincenzo F. Curtin, Shirley Coyle, Benjamin Schazmann, Robert Byrne, Fernando Benito-Lopez, Roisin M. Owens, George C. Malliaras, Dermot Diamond
Conference Papers
Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting. In particular, the true potential of wearable chemical sensors, which for the real-time ambulatory monitoring of bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, urine and blood has not been realized. Here we present a brief introduction into the fields of ionogels and organic electrochemical transistors, and in particular, the concept of an OECT transistor incorporated into a sticking-plaster, along with a printable “ionogel” to provide a wearable biosensor …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Head-to-head comparisons of conventional influenza vaccines with adenovirus (Ad) gene-based vaccines demonstrated that these viral vectors can mediate more potent protection against influenza virus infection in animal models. In most cases, Ad vaccines are engineered to be replication-defective (RD-Ad) vectors. In contrast, replication-competent Ad (RC-Ad) vaccines are markedly more potent but risk causing adenovirus diseases in vaccine recipients and health care workers. To harness antigen gene replication but avoid production of infectious virions, we developed “single-cycle” adenovirus (SC-Ad) vectors. Previous work demonstrated that SC-Ads amplify transgene expression 100-fold and produce markedly stronger and more persistent immune responses than RD-Ad vectors …
