This exploratory essay addresses the health inequalities currently affecting the African/Black diaspora in Canada and proposes a healthcare system reform to address the inequalities. Despite the Canadian healthcare system’s goals of being universal and accessible, there are disparities in African/Black patient representation. This essay proposes a healthcare system reform through incorporating African/Black patient input through the implementation of collaborative design through the lens of Afrofuturism and its values such as inclusivity and empowerment. Field observations and laboratory data collected from the Taurus Mountains Range, Turkey during the last two decades provided evidence for the link between the evolution of hypogene karst and the geodynamic history. Major evidence includes; carbonate-hosted secondary ore deposits that are converted from primarily hypogene minerals by epigene, oxygen-rich groundwater circulating at local to intermediate depths. Another piece of evidence of hypogene karst in the Tauride is the Kırkgöz springs’ huge submerged cave/conduit system, which formed the Antalya Travertine Plateau, which is the world’s largest deposit precipitated by cool karst groundwater. The restructuring of hard coal mining requires significant budgetary expenditures. A comprehensive scientific approach may facilitate the rationalisation and minimisation of mine closure costs. This study proposes a method for the preliminary estimation of the costs and time required for the potential liquidation of a hard coal mine. In addition to a literature review, a statistical analysis and a case study, personal interviews were conducted with individuals with direct management over the restructuring, reclamation and liquidation processes pertaining to mines undergoing closure.

This study examines the ways that school policies are understood and taken up by teachers. A review of the relevant literature suggests that much school policy, even that which is explicitly designed to ameliorate inequities that exist within schools and school systems, often have an inverse effect. It is also established that teachers, for many reasons, often subvert school policies in their daily practice. Using a transliteracies framework, this study seeks to explore the intimacies of these disconnects for teachers through a close look at their narratives surrounding school policy and the ways that certain policies affect their identities. This Article exposes the flaws of the Supreme Court’s historical analogue test established in Bruen. It details how modern Second Amendment jurisprudence evolved to a tenuous position through Heller and McDonald where the Supreme Court seemingly acknowledged the applicability of means-end scrutiny to the Second Amendment, before the Supreme Court more recently repudiated its use in Bruen in lieu of an inherently flimsy history-only standard that fails to account for modern societal issues. This Article provides a model for examining the impact of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (“CEDAW”) on implementing gender equality reforms using Canada and India, two CEDAW State Parties, as case studies. It also explores the influence of heteropatriarchy, deeply-rooted cultural norms perpetuating gender inequality, on hindering CEDAW’s ratification in the United States, as well as CEDAW’s effectiveness in implementing reforms in Canada and India. In a holdover-nuisance case in a co-op setting, the tenant sought a preliminary injunction due to excessive noise from building HVAC equipment, alleging breach of proprietary lease and by-laws. Tenants demonstrated likelihood of success on the merits and irreparable harm, with noise levels violating city codes. The court granted a preliminary injunction directing the board to expedite noise remediation efforts, emphasizing tenant's health risks and overriding need for relief despite ongoing mitigation efforts by the board.

The oxygen isotope anomaly (Δ¹⁷O = δ¹⁷O − 0.52 × δ¹⁸O > 0) has proven to be a robust tool for probing photochemical cycling and atmospheric formation pathways of oxidized reactive nitrogen (NO_y). Several studies have developed modeling techniques to implicitly model Δ¹⁷O of NO_y molecules based on numerous assumptions that may not always be valid. Across the country, black students are policed in schools for their natural hair and protective hairstyles. As a result of this, students who do not conform to their school’s grooming policy or dress code may suffer stiff consequences including being suspended or expelled. The most notable federal piece of legislation in response to this issue was introduced in December 2019. The CROWN Act prohibits race-based hair discrimination on the federal level. The bill passed the House but the Senate blocked it in December 2021.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for COVID-19, has provisional counts of over 110 million documented cases and 1.218 million deaths (as of February 2024) in the United States since January 2020. SARS-CoV-2 is an airborne respiratory virus that primarily infects the lungs via the ACE2 receptor but has well-documented secondary target organs including the kidneys, the gastrointestinal tract, the heart, and the skin. High And Low: Abortion In The Press In The Late Nineteenth Century And Early Twentieth Century, Lawrence M. Friedman, Hutchinson Fann

This Article analyzes the newspaper coverage of abortion in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. While coverage of abortion was spotty before the Civil War, we find that a great many articles on abortion appeared after 1850 and for the rest of the century. But by the early twentieth century, although abortion remained a common practice, newspaper coverage of the issue shrank almost to nothing. We examine why this rise and fall in abortion coverage occurred, and what these changes in press coverage tell us about the role of abortion in politics and culture.

There is a rich and diverse literature on contract law and equality, discussing whether contract law should advance social equality and if so how should contract law achieve that. However, this literature has yet to address the State’s role in combating social inequality through contract law. Filling this void this Article discusses three strategies the State can and should adopt in promoting social equality, by enforcing contracts, applying contract law doctrines, and regulating and legislating laws as background rules. This Article opens the Courting Oblivion series by demonstrating how blind-deaf concepts of justice are fundamentally ignorant of the rights and powers of oblivion. Glucksberg’s original meaning both on its own terms and against accounts of Glucksberg that depict it as having announced and followed a strict test of history and tradition as its basic approach to Fourteenth Amendment substantive due process rights.

Social media provides an untapped resource for exploring Moral Disgust. We therefore drew on ‘tweets’ about Moral Disgust (k=526) to better conceptualise the situations, people, and concepts users found Disgusting. Our Reflexive Thematic Analysis identified two themes and accompanying subthemes: Hierarchical Disgust and Third-Party Disgust. Hierarchical Disgust was constructed from expressions of Disgust directed to power structures, abuses of power, and leaders, whereas Third-Party Disgust comprised expressions directed at negative outcomes for others, often in the form of discrimination or harm. Both themes served as a form of group protection through out-group distancing and normative in-group policing. Importantly, this research …

RIPK1 inhibitors have emerged as promising candidates for treating diverse diseases, including inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. However, the previously reported binding assays have limited sensitivity and stability, impeding high-throughput screening and robust characterization of the RIPK1 inhibitors. To address this challenge, we introduced two probes, T2-BDP-FL and T3-BDP-FL, derived from distinct RIPK1 inhibitors with different binding modes to establish time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (TR-FRET) displacement assays. Employing our TR-FRET displacement assays, we quantified the biochemical binding affinities of a series of RIPK1 inhibitors with diverse structural and binding modes for human RIPK1. IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic immune-mediated fibroinflammatory disease whose pathomechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identified gene variants in familial IgG4-RD and determined their functional consequences. All 3 affected members of the family shared variants of the transcription factor IKAROS, encoded by IKZF1, and the E3 ubiquitin ligase UBR4. The IKAROS variant increased binding to the FYN promoter, resulting in higher transcription of FYN in T cells. The UBR4 variant prevented the lysosomal degradation of the phosphatase CD45. In the presence of elevated FYN, CD45 functioned as a positive regulatory loop, lowering the threshold for T cell activation. Consequently, …
