Self-Talk And Self-Leadership: Advancing A New Application Of Goleman’S Leadership Model For Counseling College Students, Liane Weintraub

The Scholarship Without Borders Journal

The self-talk habits of college students can be important factors in determining their success in academia and beyond. The years between childhood and adolescence, known as emerging adulthood, present particular developmental significance. Emerging adults experience heightened psychological and social stressors. They are also more likely to engage in negative self-talk, which puts them at increased risk for mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. Current data indicates a surge in mental health issues among college students (Healthy Minds Network, 2022). Therefore, it is imperative that educators and counselors consider self-talk behaviors as they guide and advise students. This paper considers …

T. Boudieri Extract Potentiates The Effects Of Capecitabine Treatment In Human Colon Cancer Cells, Katia Sawaya, Mahmoud Khalil, Ghada Khawaja

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

Resistance to chemotherapy remains a major challenge for colorectal cancer patients worldwide, hence the persistent need to uncover alternative treatments as well as new adjunct therapies in the fight against cancer. Natural extracts constitute an excellent source of bioactive substances that have a promising potential in that regard, with minimal negative side effects. We have previously demonstrated that both the ethanolic as well as the water extracts of Terfezia boudieri, a black desert truffle abundant in and part of the cuisine of the Mediterranean region, have significant antiproliferative effects against colon cancer cells. Our aim in this study was …

Accelerator Based Techniques Iba To Characterize Archeological Artefacts: Case Study Of Ancient Ceramics, Ahmad Reslan, Mohamad Roumie, Sandrine Elaigne, Bilal Nsouli, Mahmoud Korek

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

Ion beam analysis techniques IBA, in particular proton induced X-ray emission PIXE, play an effective and efficient role in the characterization of cultural heritage objects. As early as the 1970s, PIXE technique was applied as reliable analytical technique to determine the elemental composition of archeological artefacts, where many accelerator laboratories worldwide are still involved in such applications. It has the advantage to be multi-elemental (Na to Pb) with major, minor and trace element analysis down to part per million or ppm, fast (few minutes per sample), non-destructive and its possible combination with other IBA techniques that can reveal other information. …

Contractual Remedies In Mergers: Lessons From Crispo V. Musk, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Geeyoung Min

Law & Economics Working Papers

The Delaware Chancery Court recently restricted a merger target's ability to recover damages on behalf of its shareholders from a breaching buyer. This paper investigates the impact of the decision. First, we present a theoretical analysis to generate empirical predictions. Second, we show that the decision led to a decrease in the firm value of targets in mergers governed by Delaware law. Third, we hand-collect relevant provisions from merger agreements and find that the agreements governed by Delaware law increasingly include target-friendly non-price terms after the decision. We also present evidence suggesting deal price responds to the inclusion of novel …

Redefining Boundaries: Women's Strategic Position In The Evolving International Public Realm, Hirshi Anadza Jun 2024

Redefining Boundaries: Women's Strategic Position In The Evolving International Public Realm, Hirshi Anadza

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

The dichotomy of public and private is always related to the binary oppositions of women and men in social realms. Men are always the representation of the public because masculinity emphasises public discourse, war, and peace, and vice versa with women. Consequently, exploring how women position themselves within the international public sphere is imperative, particularly as the boundary between the public and private realms becomes increasingly blurred. This article argues that women could play a crucial role in this more complex public-private dichotomy while facing the international realm. Nation-states have a role as publics domestically but then change their status …

Drawing from social cognitive theory (SCT), the study investigates how ASPs impact academic success, informed by participant interviews and thematic analysis.

Key findings reveal four prominent themes. Firstly, effective features of ASPs for promoting academic performance include personalized guidance from academic …

Beyond The State’S Failure To Protect: The Case Of Masungi And The Prospects For Resolving The Environmental Conflict, Antonio P. Contreras

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Protected areas management is usually confronted with conflicting interests from various stakeholders and would, therefore, entail a search for a rational compromise. The Masungi Georeserve in Rizal Province, which is part of the 26,125.84 hectares that comprise the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape (UMRBPL), captures the challenges inherent in environmental conflict resolution. This paper analyzes the situation in the Masungi Georeserve using a political ecological lens, particularly applying Michel Foucault’s theory of governmentality and James Scott’s theory of legibility. It is found that attempts of the State to enable governmentality and legibility have further contributed to the conflict. The …

Best Interests Of The Child In Juvenile Justice: Analysis Of Malaysia, Philippines, And Thailand, Mary Grace C. Agcaoili

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The “best interests of the child” (BIC) is the most referenced child rights principle in international law, whereas juvenile justice is the most mentioned topic. This paper examines how countries in Southeast Asia (SEA) interpret BIC in juvenile justice and if their understanding is consistent with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other international standards and why. It contends that BIC’s indeterminate use led to misinterpretation of child rights and that BIC interpretation is influenced by several factors found within the socio-cultural and political economy of SEA. Using Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand as case studies …

A Shared Intellect: A Rawlsian Analysis Of Vaccine Patent Protections, Vincent T. Co

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

One fundamental issue at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic is the relationship between access to vaccines and intellectual property rights. The purpose of what follows is to advocate for a cosmopolitan interpretation of John Rawls and his Theory of Justice and apply it to the debate on vaccine patent protections. Using the Philippines and other developing countries as the context of analysis, this paper has one main claim—that the vaccine patent waiver is right in the interest of justice, and patent protections must be waived to achieve justice in the distribution of vaccines. The approach here analyzes Rawls’ theories …
