A Shift In The Respiratory Syncytial Virus Seasonal Pattern: A Single–Center Retrospective Study In Anhui, China (2023–2025), Yan Lu, Jie Zhang, Keran Zhu, Li Wang, Shenggang Ding, Liping Yuan
Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Objective: Before the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related hospitalizations followed a predictable seasonal pattern in Anhui, China, typically beginning in November and lasting until March of the following year. However, city-specific data for Anhui were limited. This study investigated the epidemiological patterns and risk factors associated with severe RSV-associated lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) among hospitalized children in our centre. Methods: We reviewed the records of children aged ≤14 years who were hospitalized with RSV lower respiratory tract infection between June 2023 and May 2025. RSV infection was confirmed using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction testing. Data on …

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Objective: In adolescents, pertussis commonly presents with a mild, atypical picture that can delay diagnosis, lead to its exclusion from the differential diagnosis list, and sustain community transmission. Typical paroxysms and laboratory abnormalities are frequently absent or subtle. We aimed to describe qPCR-confirmed adolescent cases and highlight diagnostic challenges. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed electronic records of patients presenting to general pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases clinics between January 2019 and August 2025. Adolescents with a multiplex respiratory panel positive only for Bordetella pertussis were included; co-detections and incomplete data were excluded. Demographics, symptoms, examination and imaging findings, laboratory results, treatment, …

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Objective: The global health interventions implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered the transmission of communicable diseases. This study examines changes in influenza virus epidemiology within the Turkish public health system across different phases of the pandemic. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 3,585 pediatric patients (aged 0–18 years) diagnosed with influenza between January 2018 and June 2023. We stratified the cohort into three periods based on admission dates: pre-COVID-19, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the post-COVID-19 period. Results: We observed a statistically significant increase in the mean age of patients during the pandemic period (p<0.001). The incidence of influenza B decreased significantly during the pandemic compared to other periods (p<0.001). The post-pandemic period was characterized by higher viral co-infection rates and increased hospitalization frequencies (p<0.001), though the duration of hospitalization decreased during the pandemic (p<0.001). In the post-pandemic phase, the typical November surge was less pronounced, with peak incidence shifting to January. Conclusion: The pandemic significantly altered influenza epidemiology, shifting viral subtype prevalence, incidence rates, co-infection patterns, seasonal trends, and mortality risks.
Applied Washington Consensus: Analyzing Chile's Success And Venezuela's Failure—Institutional Frameworks, Policy Sequencing, And Economic Liberalization In Latin America (1980s–2010)., Gjergji Bacuku
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The Washington Consensus emerged in the late 1980s as a practical policy
framework in response to the prolonged economic crisis faced by Latin American
countries. The Washington Consensus is a central factor in the modern economic history
of Latin America due to its influence on the region. This list of policy actions was
deemed desirable for Latin American countries, mostly agreed upon by economists from
the IMF, the World Bank, and the U.S. Treasury in Washington. As a result, many
countries in the region accepted the Washington Consensus as a stabilizing mechanism,
while others rejected it. This thesis discusses the …

Legal Academia And Permanent Democracy: The Fault In Our Law Schools, Sara Dillon
Legal Academia And Permanent Democracy: The Fault In Our Law Schools, Sara Dillon
DePaul Journal for Social Justice
It is widely recognized that the American Constitution is failing as the foundational document of a modern democracy. Although many basic principles of constitutionalism have faded into irrelevance, with rising authoritarianism eclipsing such core ideals as judicial independence, separation of powers and restraints on arbitrary use of power, America’s nearly 200 institutions of legal teaching and scholarship have provided little in the way of proposals for urgently needed law reform. It is striking that even with so many high-powered academic institutions, so few meaningful proposals for constitutional change have been presented to the public as a way out of our …
