Public libraries are besieged on multiple fronts: spiraling costs, budget cuts, book bans, patron privacy risks, inaccessible digital exclusives, embargoed titles, and unstable collections—not the mention a general decline in reading coupled with an upswing in reliance on artificial intelligence. No single development can explain all of the many challenges facing libraries today. But this Article argues that the shift from library-owned print collections to licensed digital ones is an overlooked throughline that has contributed to this constellation of challenges in underappreciated ways. As the published record shifts to digital formats, the mechanisms that have ensured long-term preservation are breaking down. Most libraries acquire digital materials through licensing agreements that prohibit preservation copying, format migration, and interlibrary loan—contractually overriding the exceptions Congress enacted in the Copyright Act. The Library of Congress occupies a unique position: Through statutory deposit under 17 U.S.C. §§ 407 and 408, it collects copyrighted works pursuant to federal law rather than license agreements, and deposited copies become federal property under § 704, free from contractual restrictions. In May 2025, President Trump's removal of the Librarian of Congress and attempted removal of the Register of Copyrights precipitated a constitutional crisis that exposed fundamental structural vulnerabilities in the nation's knowledge infrastructure. This Article argues that the Library of Congress faces a dual threat: a constitutional breach of separation of powers and a cultural threat to the preservation of America's intellectual heritage. This Article argues that the federal library ecosystem functions as democratic information infrastructure embedded within the institutional design of the United States government. Operationalized through national libraries, agency libraries, and federally supported library networks, this system organizes, preserves, and disseminates authoritative information, thereby supporting effective governance, public welfare, scientific progress, and democratic accountability.

Because the LOC’s broad range of programs is little known, this Article first summarizes the collections and components of the LOC and the ways it provides key resources to the American people and library communities. Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: Avapritinib, a selective inhibitor of mutated class III receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), shows promise in PDGFRA-altered pediatric glioma. We studied its efficacy in a glioblastoma (GBM) model (HF3253) containing two PDGFRA alterations: constitutive activation via an indel mutation and extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) amplification. We hypothesized that Avapritinib would preferentially improve survival in PDGFRA-amplified tumors.

Methods: Orthotopic xenografts derived from HF3253 PDGFRA ecDNA(+) (n=19) and ecDNA(-) (n=10) cells were treated with 40 mg/kg Avapritinib (5 days/week). To validate the role of PDGFRA expression, wild-type PDGFRA was overexpressed in ecDNA(-) cells, generating high PDGFRA levels with minimal ligand-independent activation in vivo. …

The current generation of personalization systems is fundamentally constrained by a centralized representational paradigm in which users are reduced to static behavioral embeddings owned and monetized by platform operators. Existing recommender architectures infer preference vectors from fragmented interaction telemetry and optimize engagement through increasingly opaque reinforcement pipelines. Such systems exhibit severe deficiencies in epistemic continuity, user sovereignty, contextual cognition, longitudinal identity fidelity, and privacy-preserving personalization. This study investigates the suitability of five Egyptian clay deposits—Wadi El-Natrun, Qasr El-Sagha, Kafr Homied, Fayed, and Suez Road—for ceramic building applications. Representative samples were characterized chemically and mineralogically, with grain size distribution and Atterberg limits determined to assess their industrial potential. Mineralogical analysis identified montmorillonite, illite, and kaolinite as the dominant clay minerals. Grain size and plasticity data, plotted on industrial diagrams, revealed that all samples are highly plastic clays with elevated clay fractions and minimal sand content. Such properties, while beneficial for molding, require modification to reduce excessive plasticity. The addition of non-plastic materials is recommended to enhance …

The sludge produced from marble processing has become a significant environmental hazard in major marble mining and processing countries. Utilizing marble dust (MD) as a partial replacement for cement offers benefits: it reduces the need for landfill disposal, which can lead to air and water pollution, and it decreases the consumption of cement, which contributes to the global carbon footprint.
