Jenifer Michaels was a legendary subcultural star within the gay liberation film milieu of 1970s Los Angeles. Taking three paths to approaching and interpreting Michaels’s filmic and archival image, this article is structured by an analysis of Michaels’s documentary appearances, her performance in sex films, and her statements published in a textual interview. Working against what I call historiographic gentrification, the article utilizes archival and micro-historical methods to think through Michaels’s subcultural stardom as a nexus for complicating biography, documentary, and the politics of veracity.

The soluble variant of the ectopeptidase CD13 (sCD13), released from the cell surface by matrix metalloproteinase 14 (MMP14), is a potent pro-inflammatory mediator, displaying chemotactic, angiogenic, and arthritogenic properties through bradykinin receptor B1 (B1R). We revealed a link between sCD13 and amplified neutrophil-mediated inflammatory responses in SARS-CoV-2 infection. sCD13 was markedly elevated in patients with COVID-19 and correlated with disease severity and variants, ethnicity, inflammation markers, and neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis). Neutrophils treated with sCD13 showed heightened NETosis and chemotaxis, which were inhibited by sCD13 receptor blockade. Meanwhile sCD13 did not induce platelet aggregation. The rule for determining design patent infringement requires an assessment of substantial similarity through the eyes of an ordinary observer—similarity sufficient to induce the observer to purchase the infringing design supposing it to be the patented design. That test, which originates in the Supreme Court’s 1871 Gorham Manufacturing Co. v. White decision, is an anomaly. It is a patent infringement test framed in language that would be more at home in a trademark infringement or unfair competition case. This Note argues that a proper interpretation of Florida law recognizes property interests in elected office as an integral factor to be considered when assessing what process is due to suspended elected officials. Part I provides an overview of the theoretical underpinnings and modern evolution of procedural due process and property interests, particularly as they relate to public employment and elected office. In Savanna ecosystems, cycles of sustenance include periods of food abundance and deficits. In rain-fed agricultural systems, forests are a vital food source that helps households close this cycle. This paper uses cross-sectional data to explore the association between provisioning ecosystem services and timing to food insecurity in forest fringe communities (N = 500). The time to food insecurity analysis revealed a significant difference in the onset of food insecurity among households with varying levels of access to forest provisioning services. Households with access to more than four forest products experienced a slower timing to seasonal insecurity. In contrast, …

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects workers from discrimination because of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Controversially, courts do not typically extend this protection to individual expression tied to a protected trait, such as a Black employee who wears their hair in dreadlocks or a Latino employee who speaks Spanish on the job. Judicial unwillingness to protect employee self-expression tied to a protected trait causes employees who identify with marginalized groups to suppress their identities to conform with mainstream culture—often at tremendous costs to themselves and the organizations they work for.

Part I of this Note will contextualize the practice of legacy admissions, describe its inherent unfairness and deleterious effects, and explain why—notwithstanding those concerns—some universities still employ the practice in their admissions processes. With that background, Part II of this Note will explain why fiscal incentives are the most appropriate mechanism to disincentivize legacy admissions practices. Part III will then evaluate the flawed federal fiscal proposals to curb legacy admissions, and Part IV will argue that state-level solutions should be preferred to federal ones to respect the values of federalism and promote the most narrowly-crafted, individualized, and state-specific solutions.

A few years before the Supreme Court formally overruled Chevron, anti-administrative activists successfully prohibited judicial deference to reasonable exercises of interpretive discretion by regulatory agencies in a handful of receptive states. State governments’ treatment of this issue is likely to generate even more attention in Loper Bright’s wake. The prominent “checklist” and analogical approaches of trying to pin down the characteristics that do and do not constitute fascism cause consistent disagreement around the meaning of the term (e.g., How many traits make a regime fascist?). Background:

Prior studies examined variants within presenilin-2 (PSEN2), presenilin-1 (PSEN1), and amyloid precursor protein (APP) genes. However, previously-reported clinically-relevant variants and other predicted damaging missense (DM) variants have not been characterized in a newer release of the Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP).

Objective:

To characterize previously-reported clinically-relevant variants and DM variants in PSEN2, PSEN1, APP within the participants from the ADSP.

Methods:

We identified rare variants (MAF< 1%) in PSEN2, PSEN1, and APP in 14,641 individuals with whole genome sequencing and 16,849 individuals with whole exome sequencing available (Ntotal = 31,490). We additionally curated …

Yersinia and Pseudomonas use a T3SS to secrete effectors into host cells that inhibit phagocytosis and modulate immune responses, such as inflammasome activation. Inflammasomes promote the activation of the proinflammatory protease caspase-1. The activation of an inflammasome sensor in response to a signal or ligand initiates the assembly of the inflammasome leading to activation of caspase-1 which cleaves GSDMD and pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 into their mature forms. As neutrophils are recruited in large quantities to sites of infection, they are excellent candidates to drive inflammasome dependent responses. 3D printing is growing beyond plastics into fields like food and construction, bringing rapid additive manufacturing to various industries and consumers. However, high costs and the need for specialized knowledge limit access for many. My project aimed to modify a low-cost 3D printer to print with paste-like materials using commonly available parts and simple processes. I tested the modification with clay, mashed potatoes, and cream cheese, and found that it successfully worked with all three. When discussing the federal judiciary, commentators typically fixate on the 800 or so “Article III” judges who are nominated by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and enjoy life tenure and salary protection. Yet most federal adjudication does not take place in federal courthouses at all. Instead, it occurs in nondescript hearing rooms in administrative agencies—if not telephonically. Indeed, the more than 12,000 agency adjudicators scattered across the federal government collectively issue millions of decisions per year on subjects ranging from Social Security and veterans benefits to immigration and patent rights. The children’s story Pilus Rumput Laut untuk Rasi by Nabila Adani and its English translation, Berli and the Sea, foreground the ecological crisis facing Belitung Island, Indonesia, where uncontrolled mining and coastal exploitation disrupt the delicate balance between land and sea. The protagonist, Berli, symbolizes resistance against environmental degradation, a theme mirrored in the translator’s ideological and strategic choices when rendering culture-specific items. This study examines how Venuti’s translation ideologies—domestication and foreignization—and Baker’s translation strategies shape the portrayal of Belitung Island’s identity and its environmental message.
