This paper examines Emily Dickinson's aversion to heterosexual marriage and sexual initiation in her poem "My Life had stood-- a Loaded Gun". The ethics of deciphering through identifying and categorizing potentially Queer authors and texts impacts our understandings of frequently canonized authors such as Emily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson's nineteenth-century American context informed her ability to write deliberately about her experience of subversive sexual desire. Instead, Dickinson utilizes images of death, apathy, and immortality to illustrate her revulsion toward the male body and heterosexual marriage. The scorpion species Euscorpius idaeus Yağmur & Tropea, 2017, previously known from Mount Kazdağı in the Balıkesir and Çanakkale Provinces of Turkey, is reported for the first time from the Lesvos Island, Greece. In this study, it is transferred to the genus Alpiscorpius Gantenbein et al., 1999. Detailed illustrations of Alpiscorpius idaeus (Yağmur & Tropea, 2017), comb. n. from the Lesvos Island population are provided.

In late 1977 and early 1978, the Boston Globe published a series of articles about a Delaware corporation engaged in building fiberglass boats in New Hampshire. The articles reported a number of allegedly serious defects in the boats, some of which may have contributed to sinkings. Critical comments of boat owners, surveyors, Coast Guard officers, company employees and a repairman were included. The builder was given an opportunity to respond in part of one article. Provoked by this quotidien instance of investigative journalism, the boat builder brought a libel action against the Globe in federal district court. The boat builder's …

Prior to the 1964 decision in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, defamation law in the United States was controlled by common law principles developed in the state courts. In New York Times the United States Supreme Court staked out an area of first amendment privilege, which limited the states' power to permit recovery in defamation actions brought by public officials. The remedies fashioned to redress violations of the fourth amendment to the United States Constitution continue to be the subject of much judicial, legislative, and scholarly inquiry. During the Depression of the 1930's, Congress created a number of federal loan programs as part of Roosevelt's New Deal legislation aimed at stimulating economic growth. In recent years considerable attention has been paid in the United States to the development of informal "alternatives to court" as part of a world-wide access to justice movement. Of these alternatives to courts, mediation contrasts most sharply with adjudication and, in theory, promises much by way of decreasing the alienation of citizens when it is made an adjunct to the formal judicial process. The contrast and promise stem largely from the participatory and consensual character of the mediation process. Throughout the history of the cinema, filmmakers have turned to the visual arts for inspiration in creating spiritual styles on film. In this essay, it is argued that Roberto Rossellini’s The Flowers of St. Francis (1950) and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev (1966) were influenced by Giotto di Bondone’s frescos and Andrei Rublev’s Eastern Orthodox icons, respectively. Committed to realism, Rossellini adopts Giotto’s proto-Renaissance, humanist art as a model for a spiritual style in which the Transcendent is manifested through the natural world. Subverting terrestrial reality, Tarkovsky adopts the aesthetic principles of the Eastern Orthodox icon, translating Pavel Florensky’s concepts of …

Inaugurated into the Criterion Collection in 2022 this paper re-examines some of the initial responses to the 2008 Disney-Pixar animated film, WALL-E. The movie received a mixed reception, largely celebrated (but occasionally viewed as “too leftist” by others) for its environmental, anti-capitalist message by many public critics, yet disparaged or dismissed as being superficially empty, shallow, and hollow in academic circles. Labor has been the focus of some academic criticism of the film, particularly as it relates to commoditisation, but this paper recontextualises labor not with capitalism, but with love. This paper presents an expert-level comparative audit of the SOC 2 controls implemented by Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI, drawing from public attestations, model cards, and technical documentation. Going beyond traditional compliance, the assessment incorporates frameworks from ISO 27001, NIST, and AI-specific risk models to benchmark each provider’s security maturity across five domains: organizational governance, infrastructure controls, operational security, data protection, and AI-specific safeguards.

This article examines the artistic production of three Latin American artists, two Brazilians and one Chilean: Rosana Paulino (1967-), Moara Tupinambá (1983-), and Cecilia Vicuña (1948-). Vicuña and Tupinambá, artists of Indigenous descent, incorporate the epistemologies of native peoples into their works, considering the differences in ethnicity, territory, and generation that distinguish them. Paulino, in turn, a Black woman from the outskirts of São Paulo (SP/Brazil), addresses issues related to Black ancestry in her artistic production, particularly those linked to the experiences of enslaved African populations. In this article, we employ a decolonial methodology to question whose voices and histories are highlighted and whose are silenced in museum exhibitions. This methodology is employed to analyze the memorial museums situated on sites associated with state-induced violence, or, more precisely, within the premises of the Karaganda Corrective Labor Camp (the museum in Dolinka and the “ALZHIR” memorial complex). Our objective is to examine how these museums endeavor to reclaim these sites as significant for national history and identity. This essay deploys the Waray word for haunting, apparition, and feeling—paabat—to examine Merlie Alunan’s poems about the Balangiga Encounter of 1901 and its aftermath in the anthology Running with Ghosts and Other Poems (2017). This historical event transpired when the townsfolk launched a surprise attack against the American soldiers stationed in Balangiga, a town in Samar, Philippines. Despite its success, the Americans harshly retaliated by pacifying the entire island through militarization, massacre, and arson. Alunan’s poetry attempts to reconstruct a range of events and subjectivities that constitute this traumatic history. Initially, it can be posited that her poetics and self-reflexivity …

This article describes a discursive shift at the beginning of the twenty-first century in academic and public debates from postcolonial to decolonial critiques and asks what this means for the study of national and imperial memories. While some critics, like Robert J. C. Young, see this shift within postcolonial discourse, others, like Sylvia Wynter, believe that postcolonial theory itself needs to be decolonized. Against the backdrop of modern states’ cadastralization of the sea, this article discusses images of the sea in three texts that are analyzed as figures of resistance to contemporary forms of territorialization: Hugo Grotius’s Mare Liberum [The Free Sea] (1609), Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus (1981), and the South China Sea (SCS) Arbitration Award (2016). It is argued that the recurring images of the sea in these three texts, which may be collectively called “Grotian images of the sea,” constitute a thought that resists states’ territorializing tendencies by grounding legal challenges to excessive claims to the sea. …

Gaia’s symbiotic imagery and the Anthropocene crisis characterize the early twenty-firstvcentury, shaping a historical consciousness where we are becoming Isabelle Stengers’sv“cosmopolitical idiots.” In this context, we practice “slowing down” and regeneration, always with historical specificities and intricate networks of relations. This paper reevaluates Aimé Césaire and Frantz Fanon’s vivid transcorporeal language, charged with the violent energy of resistance, through the lenses of symbiogenesis, metamorphosis, and hybridogenesis. This article will analyze a range of Australian picture books that both explore the topic of disability and serve as educational tools for exploring diversity issues. The books were identified in a survey administered by the State Library of New South Wales (NSW) public library service, which identified 62 books that deal with diversity. Thirteen of the 62 books were assessed as having characters with a disability—including autism, mental illness, dementia, spina bifida, neurodiversity, physical disability, deafness, and implied but unidentified disabilities. Background and Objectives: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by pathogenic variants of the DMD gene, leading to the loss of dystrophin. Clinical variability in DMD can complicate interpretation of interventional data in clinical trials. One source of clinical variability is allelic heterogeneity (different pathogenic variants with different effects on dystrophin protein expression). We sought to determine whether gene variant classes in clinical trial participants potentially affect clinical trial data interpretation. Methods: We analyzed 186 vamorolone trial participants with DMD (VBP15-002/003; VBP15-004) who were 4 to steroid-naïve at baseline. Administration of human monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in preclinical species often triggers an immunogenic response, leading to the formation of anti-drug antibodies (ADA). ADA can bind to the mAb and reduce their systemic exposure by enhancing immune-complex mediated clearance. Thus, ADA complicates the accurate assessment of preclinical pharmacokinetics and toxicology studies. To mitigate this effect, we explored short-term immunosuppressive therapy (methotrexate or combination of tacrolimus and sirolimus) to induce prolonged immune tolerance towards a human mAb, erenumab, in rats. The results demonstrated that tacrolimus/sirolimus but not the methotrexate regimens prevented ADA formation in all treated animals relative to the non-immunocompromised control …
