The use of corporal punishment has been debated due to linkage to decreased academic performance (Hickmon, 2010) and negative social behaviors (Hicks-Pass, 2009). Disparities exist in who has received corporal punishment (Rollins, 2012). Although there is much research pertaining to corporal punishment, there have been few studies conducted where students' opinions of it have been obtained (Holden, 2002). The thesis that I wish to develop in this chapter is that a functionalist view of the development of global institutions suggests that the structural inequalities in global income that were a primary cause of the global economic crisis of 2008, and that continue to endanger the world economy, have the potential to provide the political preconditions for a global regime that can help redress those inequalities. The dormant Commerce Clause’s extraterritoriality doctrine has long baffled courts and legal scholars. Rather than attempt to make sense of the doctrine, most scholars have instead argued that it should be abandoned as unnecessary and unworkable. Such scholarship, however, is of little use to the lower courts struggling with extraterritoriality issues. The federal courts in California, for example, have recently been forced to rule on challenges to California’s landmark carbon emissions and animal welfare legislation. A key insight of modern property scholarship is that property rights are limited by the rights of others. In the antebellum era, slave owners’ property rights in fugitive slaves who escaped into the North existed in tension with the rights of free blacks who might be wrongfully claimed. At first, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793, as supplemented by the law in most Northern states, limited a slave owner’s property rights by providing limited legal protections to free blacks against being erroneously claimed as slaves. Edward Snowden’s disclosures of secret National Security Agency documents have significant implications for Canadian national security law. Snowden’s revelation that the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) attempted to spy on the Brazilian government is analyzed to determine: first, whether economic intelligence gathering is a legal function of CSEC; and, second, whether CSEC employees would be afforded protection by the Security of Information Act (SOIA) if they decided to reveal the existence of such a program. The incidence of HIV and Hepatitis C is significantly higher in Canadian federal penitentiaries than among the general public, as are the transmission rates of these two diseases. These disproportionate rates of infection are largely attributed to the sharing of needles among inmates who are addicted to intravenous drugs. This has created a serious public health risk for all federal inmates as well as the general public, since many of these inmates will be released back into society. The common heritage of [hu]mankind (CHM) principle is an element of the Moon Treaty of 1979 that was foreshadowed by the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. However, its precise content and legal implications have been the subject of conflicting interpretations. This paper will apply a Gramscian analysis to the formation of international law. Gramscian theory is a school of neo-Marxist International Relations (IR) theory that focuses upon the ways in which a dominant historic bloc (called the “hegemon”) maintains control over other groups. Background: Person-Centered Care (PCC) is now considered a mandatory approach in Patient-Physician consultation. The aim of the study was to identify patients’ perception regarding barriers and possible remedies for implementation of PCC in Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR).
Methods: A cross-sectional multi-country study was conducted in six countries of EMR during May 2014 to October 2014. Our previous research defined two tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genotypes: high cadmium (Cd) accumulator YSL189 and low Cd accumulator HZ903. Further hydroponics experiments investigated the different tolerance mechanisms to Cd stress between YSL189 and HZ903 at the seedling stage. When Cd concentration was >20 µM in the growing medium, the uptake rate of Cd was significantly higher in roots of YSL189 than it was in roots of HZ903. When plants were supplied with 50 and 100 µM Cd in the growing medium, there were higher Cd concentration, higher biomass and plant height, shorter roots, and higher expression levels of transporter genes …

Under drought stress, a signaling system induces the expression of specific genes to alleviate the harmful effects of drought stress. The BZIP gene is a transcription factor in the signaling abiotic stresses and plays a role in the regulation of responses to different stresses in plants. The P5CS gene controls the activity of the proline-5-carboxylate synthase enzyme that is involved in proline synthesis in drought stress conditions. Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New mixed Schiff bases, Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Mn(II) complexes, were synthesized derived from 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacethophenone and 1-amino-5-benzoyl-4-phenyl-1H-pyrimidine-2-one/thione. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic measurements, molar conductivity, IR, electronic, NMR, and mass spectral studies. All the complexes showed nonelectrolytic behavior. Moreover, the newly synthesized mixed ligand complexes were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial efficiency against bacteria and yeast. The compound named Co(L$_{1}$L) had good antifungal activity against Candida species, but no profound antibacterial effect against bacterial strains. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a powerful technique for screening boranes envisaged for chemical hydrogen storage. The demonstration is based on the use of six metal (II) chlorides (MCl$_{2})$ (with M as 3d-metal or d$^{8}$-metal) as destabilizing agents of solid-state hydrazine borane (N$_{2}$H$_{4}$BH$_{3})$. On the basis of TGA profiles combined with derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) curves, it is shown that: e.g. (1) CuCl$_{2}$ is an inefficient dopant whereas it is efficient towards ammonia borane (NH$_{3}$BH$_{3})$; (2) one of the best destabilization results is achieved with N$_{2}$H$_{4}$BH$_{3}$ doped by 10 wt{\%} CuCl$_{2}$-NiCl$_{2}$, the sample decomposing from 30 $^{\circ}$C with greatly mitigated amounts of …

As the collective impact of human activity approaches Earth's biophysical limits, the ethics of food become increasingly important. Hundreds of millions of people remain undernourished, yet only 60 percent of the global harvest is consumed by humans, while 35 percent is fed to livestock and 5 percent is used for biofuels and other industrial products. This essay considers the ethics of such use of edible nutrition for feedstock and biofuel. How humanity uses Earth's land is a reflection of its values. An aeropalynological survey of the atmosphere of Büyükorhan in Bursa Province was carried out from January 2012 to December 2013 using a Durham gravimetric sampler. The number of pollen grains per cm^2 was calculated on a weekly basis. Over 2 years a total of 13,274 pollen grains/cm^2 from 44 taxa, including 24 arboreal plants (APs) and 20 nonarboreal plants (NAPs), and unidentified pollen grains were recorded. In 2012 and 2013, respectively, 5159 and 8115 pollen grains were recorded. The pollen grains consisted of 87.46% APs, 12.20% NAPs, and 0.35% unidentified plants. This Article compares and contrasts state regulatory decisions, programs, subsidies, and the evolving new business model. Section II examines the revolutionary role of renewable energy, the critical role of electricity, and the changing business model. Section III analyzes how various incentives are being embedded in government programs in many states, how the incentives or the programs affect the evolving business model, how these are valued and shift economic impacts, and criticism of the results. To address the need of increasing fuel economy requirements, automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are increasing the number of turbocharged engines in their powertrain line-ups. The turbine-driven technology uses a forced induction device, which increases engine performance by increasing the density of the air charge being drawn into the cylinder. Denser air allows more fuel to be introduced into the combustion chamber, thus increasing engine performance. During the compression process, the air is heated to temperatures that can cause pre-ignition, resulting in reduced engine functionality. Measuring the similarity between two streamlines is fundamental to many important flow data analysis and visualization tasks such as feature detection, pattern querying and streamline clustering. This dissertation presents a novel streamline similarity measure inspired by the bag-of-features concept from computer vision. Different from other streamline similarity measures, the proposed one considers both the distribution of and the distances among features along a streamline. Insect pesticide resistance has become a costly problem in the US. To make things more problematic, resistance to one pesticide is often associated with cross-resistance to other toxins, including pesticides that have not yet even been developed. In this study, we investigated a possible type of cross-resistance in the model fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, some stocks of which are resistant to the very potent mushroom toxin α-amanitin. Because α-amanitin is solely produced by mushrooms, and because D. melanogaster does not feed on mushrooms in nature, the fruit flies should not be resistant to this toxin. In order to understand …
