We expand on Navier-Stokes’ approach to study non-equilibrium dynamics in a field that evolves over time. The Russian Civil War (1917-1922), fought between Bolshevik and anti-Bolshevik factions, was one of the most pivotal conflicts of the 20th century. It led directly to the rise of the world’s first socialist state, the Soviet Union, which for decades was at the forefront of the international communist movement and a major global power until its collapse in 1991, around 70 years after its founding. Freshwater ecosystems in East Texas contain a rich freshwater biodiversity, with the Neches and Sabine River basins supporting some of the greatest freshwater fish diversity in the state. Given the heterogeneity of habitats and species diversity, these rivers serve as excellent natural systems for examining the ecological processes shaping biodiversity patterns and species distributions. In 2023-2024, 60 streams in the Neches and Sabine River basins were surveyed across three seasons to investigate the patterns and ecological drivers of taxonomic (TDβ), functional (FDβ), and phylogenetic β-diversity (PDβ) facets of freshwater fish assemblages. Exposure to atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) presents a ubiquitous public health risk and is often disproportionately high in disadvantaged communities. Understanding is still limited regarding the sources, disparities, and health effects of PAH exposures. This dissertation consists of three studies that address these knowledge gaps. The first study aimed to quantify the contributions of multiple exposure pathways to PAH-related cancer risks. Concentrations of PAHs in soil and air were measured in Memphis, TN, from 2016 to 2019. The cumulative cancer risk was 0.423×10-6 among children, with 75% from ingestion. For adults, the risk was 0.546×10-6, predominantly from dermal contact …

The classic social contract theorized by Hobbes, Rousseau, and Locke advocates for establishing the state based on individual freedom; for them, a contractual agreement rather than nature serves as the foundation for the state. In his Philosophy of Rights, Hegel rejects this classic view of the social contract, which sees freedom and consent as the basis of the state. While the perspectives of the classic social contract and Hegel yield differing interpretations of freedom, the dissertation explores their relationship against contemporary challenges to freedom. Recent legislation in Illinois schools has focused on enhancing cardiac preparation in schools by establishing written emergency plans that are to be disseminated to employees within thirty days from the start of the school year. This web-based education tool was created as a centralized hub for employees to locate pertinent information regarding cardiac emergencies. The intent is to increase cardiac emergency preparedness in schools with access to evidence-based resources and content. This data analysis examined associations between cardiovascular and muscular fitness indicators and the presence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older adult athletes. Using cross-sectional data from 1,110 participants aged 50 and older who completed the Sustained Athlete Fitness Exam (SAFE) at state-level Senior Games events, we evaluated both objective performance metrics and self-reported exercise behaviors. Cardiovascular measures included systolic blood pressure (SBP), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and body mass index (BMI). This three-paper dissertation explores law enforcement phlebotomy, the ability of law enforcement officers to draw blood. Phlebotomy is both a ubiquitous, invasive diagnostic tool as well as a social site with complex relational dynamics at play between phlebotomist and patient. Through law enforcement phlebotomy, the blood draw is co-opted from the medical field into the policing field, and the normative framework through which it is used changes: whereas medical edicts instruct providers to work with patients through an ethics of care--respecting consent and refusal--policing is not similarly bound, instead operating through a prioritization of security and efficiency. Transposable elements (TEs) contribute to nearly half of the human genome yet have been overlooked in genomic medicines due to the stereotypic impression as “junk DNA” and technical challenges. However, studies in the last two decades demonstrated that dysregulation of the epigenome in cancer cells resurrects the cis-regulatory functions of TEs, including the promoter activities. The development of optogenetic tools has greatly advanced the capability of researchers to understand the connection between neuronal activity and behavior. Optogenetics makes use of opsins, which are light activated ion-channels, ion pumps, or G-Protein coupled receptor (GPCR-based) proteins used to regulate cellular activity. Coupled with technological advances in genetics and optical physics/microscopy, optogenetics can be used to control specific populations of cells in a time-locked, spatially specific manner. The tenant sought declaratory and injunctive relief, alleging rent overcharges and improper deregulation of his apartment. After purchasing the building, the landlord moved for summary judgment, claiming a lawful high-rent deregulation occurred in 2009. The tenant countered that the apartment had been used commercially by a prior tenant, disqualifying it from deregulation. The motion court had granted the landlord summary judgment and ejectment. On appeal, the court reversed, holding triable issues of fact remained regarding the apartment's actual use and whether deregulation was proper.
