Targeting The Beiging Of Muscle-Associated Adipose Tissue To Promote Muscle Regeneration, Jacob C. Parson
Targeting The Beiging Of Muscle-Associated Adipose Tissue To Promote Muscle Regeneration, Jacob C. Parson
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
The expansion of intra-muscular adipose tissue (IMAT) between myofibers and epi-muscular adipose tissue (EMAT) outside of the muscle boundary accompanies numerous pathologies including diabetes, muscular dystrophy, and aging. IMAT and EMAT are anatomically juxtaposed to myofibers. Some evidence supports that IMAT and EMAT impede muscle function. This is potentially due to paracrine factors that are secreted by IMAT/EMAT. Different adipose depots can be classified in numerous ways including where they are located anatomically as well as the factors in which they secrete. Unlike classical white fat, adipose depots classified as brown or beige, noted by the marker uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) …
Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod
Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod
Catholic University Law Review
Where do children come from? The source of childhood—either nature or political will—is a matter not merely of chronology but of authority. Whoever makes children gets to define childhood. Legal childhood is one type of legal personhood. Legal personhood matters because legal persons bear legal rights and duties. Rights and duties direct how we act toward each other. Thus, our ideas about how persons come to be, who counts as a person, and how persons are defined in law determine in large part how we act toward persons, both other persons and ourselves.
A legal person is an artifact of …

Increasing Formation Of Advance Directives In Acute Care Through Staff Education, Piper E. Parres
Increasing Formation Of Advance Directives In Acute Care Through Staff Education, Piper E. Parres
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
In the acute care setting, the condition and stability of patients can change in an instant. Oftentimes, patients that were ambulatory, independent, and high functioning may be rendered critically ill and unable to communicate due to the rapid onset of an illness. When this happens, the care team must act quickly to stabilize the patient by any means necessary. With the wealth of medical knowledge and technology available in modern healthcare, life may be sustained indefinitely with the help of machinery such as ventilators, continuous renal replacement therapy, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. While some patients may welcome these interventions, others …
Shining Light On Solar Equity: Navigating Legal Barriers To Solar Energy For Low-Income Communities In Washington, Magdalena Larrain
Shining Light On Solar Equity: Navigating Legal Barriers To Solar Energy For Low-Income Communities In Washington, Magdalena Larrain
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
While solar energy adoption has been growing rapidly across the United States, access to its benefits remains uneven. In Washington State, low-income households and marginalized communities often face significant barriers to participation in the clean energy transition. These include high upfront installation costs, limited financing options, and legal frameworks that fail to account for renters, multi-family dwellings, and communities without suitable rooftops. Additionally, outdated net metering policies and restrictive utility regulations further limit solar accessibility for those already burdened by energy insecurity. This article investigates the potential of community solar projects—shared solar installations that allow multiple households to subscribe and …
The Right To Repair Medical Devices: A Right To Patient Needs, Shaheer Hashmi
The Right To Repair Medical Devices: A Right To Patient Needs, Shaheer Hashmi
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The laws governing the repair of medical devices, most notably §1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), place unnecessary and harmful restrictions on healthcare access in the United States. As hospitals increasingly rely on complex medical technologies, manufacturers have relied on anti-circumvention laws to block independent and in-house repairs, effectively monopolizing the repair market. As a result, our current system is one that delays treatment, inflates costs, and leaves healthcare providers and consumers with fewer options during times of crisis and routine care alike. Drawing on legal analysis, policy critique, and lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, this article shows …

The Banality Of Crimmigration—Can Immigration Law Recover Itself?, Catherine Dauvergne
The Banality Of Crimmigration—Can Immigration Law Recover Itself?, Catherine Dauvergne
All Faculty Publications
This article argues that criminal law has overtaken immigration law to such an extent that the notion of “crimmigration” is no longer shocking. In Canada, where the population has long been supportive of immigration and where national politics have been remarkably consensual in matters of immigration, crimmigration now forms the basis of a new form of bipartisan consensus. By looking back on the Justin Trudeau Liberal government, we see that most of the Harper-era crimmigration measures were left in place, and the advance of crimmigration continued unabated. If we are to make any progress in recovering space for values other …
The President's Orders Targeting Law Firms As Unconstitutional Bills Of Attainder-- Damning Lessons From The Past, Gary Simson
The President's Orders Targeting Law Firms As Unconstitutional Bills Of Attainder-- Damning Lessons From The Past, Gary Simson

“Sentence first, verdict afterwards,” the Queen in Alice in Wonderland insisted at the trial of the Knave of Hearts for stealing the Queen’s tarts. Such an upsidedown process obviously leaves quite a bit to be desired, but compared to the process provided by President Donald Trump’s executive orders announcing and inflicting debilitating penalties on particular law firms, it’s not all that bad. After all, the Knave of Hearts, unlike the targeted firms, at least got some sort of trial before punishment was announced.
Also, it’s one thing to be punished for stealing the Queen’s tarts—something that any law-abiding citizen of …
A Psychocosocial Behavior Modification That Impacts Social Belonging In College Students, Julia Roland
A Psychocosocial Behavior Modification That Impacts Social Belonging In College Students, Julia Roland
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Disparities in educational attainment have been at the forefront of many educational leaders' minds. For those in higher education, finding solutions to eliminate these disparities is critical to their viability. Research on these disparities has led to an encouraging discovery centered around the psychological construct of social belonging. Studies have been finding evidence that a student's sense of social belonging impacts their academic success in college. Furthermore, researchers have discovered an intervention that fosters a student's sense of belonging. This intervention has been shown to increase a student's sense of belonging at college and, in turn, has increased the students' …

Personhood After Dobbs, Joshua J. Craddock
Personhood After Dobbs, Joshua J. Craddock
Catholic University Law Review
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, unsettled questions remain about the constitutional status of unborn children. With good reason, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization did not address whether unborn children are persons within the original meaning of the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses. The historical evidence, however, is now well-established that when the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, the word “person” had a settled public meaning that included every human being—children in the womb among them. And if unborn human beings were included within the original public meaning of “person” in …
The Human Dimension Of "Home", Robert A. Destro
The Human Dimension Of "Home", Robert A. Destro
Catholic University Law Review
All societies provide a legal framework that protects the pivotal functions of home and family. None provide a clear legal definition of “home”. Nor, this article argues, can they. “Home” is a concept rooted in the lived experience of human persons. In this article, the second in a series, the author employs the “human dimension” [HDIM] concept, initially developed by the U.S. military and later adopted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as the lens through which one can examine the “human element” of human rights. The framework for this analysis is the “four clusters of value-types” …

Associations Of The Medicaid Expansion Policy With Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Breast Cancer Screening And Treatment, James Howard Smith Ii
Associations Of The Medicaid Expansion Policy With Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Breast Cancer Screening And Treatment, James Howard Smith Ii
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background and Aim. This dissertation examines Medicaid expansion’s effect on breast cancer (BC) screening and treatment disparities in two Medicaid-expanding states (MES) that passed Medicaid expansion (New Jersey and Vermont) relative to two non-expansion states (NES) (Georgia and Wisconsin). It then compares the association of Medicaid expansion to other states that did not undertake this policy on various subgroups, such as minorities by race and ethnicity, income, and age groups. Black women still bear significant BC disparities due to untimely screenings, treatments, and deaths. Therefore, it is critical to investigate how socioeconomic status influences racial/ethnic disparity gaps, given that BC …

In this non-payment proceeding, the tenant successfully moved to dismiss the petition, with the landlord's cross-motion to amend being denied. The court determined the apartment remained Rent Stabilized, rejecting the landlord's claim of high-rent vacancy deregulation. The landlord failed to comply with pre-HSTPA deregulation requirements, including providing proper notice and registering a lawful rent with DHCR. The court found the landlord's purported "free market" lease rent unlawful and never registered, rendering the petition and rent demand defective. Consequently, the court dismissed the petition, affirming that a non-payment proceeding cannot be maintained without registering the legal regulated rent.

Futurismo Cósmico: Sonic Dislocation Under The Fifth Sun, Rodrigo Martínez Torres
Futurismo Cósmico: Sonic Dislocation Under The Fifth Sun, Rodrigo Martínez Torres
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Futurismo Cósmico is a text in which I tune into the interstices of my sonic practice: popular musical styles, alternative tuning systems, and different, contrasting epochs of my experience as Mexicano and Latino. I discuss three projects of mine that engage with sound, time, and space in different ways. The journey concludes by looking at my practice in the context of a culturally dislocated space I inhabit, in my own psyche. However, understanding that I am a social being, this same practice is what provides a drive and a sense of purpose in an otherwise loosely articulated identity.
Environmental History In Western Anatolia (Turkey) Since The Last Glacial Maximum, Mustafa Dogan, Cetin Senkul, Jessie Woodbridge
Environmental History In Western Anatolia (Turkey) Since The Last Glacial Maximum, Mustafa Dogan, Cetin Senkul, Jessie Woodbridge
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Mediterranean landscapes have been shaped by complex interactions between climate, land use and fire overmulti-millennial timescales. Understanding past trajectories of change provides knowledge of how modernlandscapes emerged, which can be valuable for their sustainable management. The aim of this study is toreconstruct environmental change in Western Anatolia (Turkey) through palaeoecological analysis of sedimentfrom Buldan Yayla Lake (Denizli-Buldan) from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present, using a high-resolutionand multi-proxy dataset. To this end, fossil pollen, micro-charcoal, non-pollen palynomorphs, micro(μ)-XRF and radiocarbon analyses were applied to an ~18 m sediment core from Buldan Yayla Lake (Denizli-Buldan). According to the fossil …

Comparing The Evolution Of Lobbying Legislation In Lithuania And Ireland, Whither Regulatory Robustness?, John Hogan
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This paper compares the amendments introduced by the Regulation ofLobbying and Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) (Amendment) Act 2023with the original regulations of the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015. Thestudy was conducted using the Hired Guns Method for assessing therobustness of lobbying legislation, developed by the Centre for Public Integrity(CPI), allowing findings to be compared with lobbying regulationsinternationally. The 2015 legislation was introduced after years of tribunals, scandals, unfulfilled political promises, and economic crisis, in an effort toincrease the public’s trust in politicians, representative institutions, democracyand the wider bureaucracy. The 2023 Amendment came in the wake of a 2020lobbying scandal. The paper …
