The notion of care refers to activities that satisfy the basic needs of existence and reproduction. Within rural communities, care work such as the production and preparation of food contributes to food security at the household level. Care work supports the paid workforce, allowing workers to focus on commercial productive activities that generate economic income in rural communities. Women perform 6.3 to 29.5 more hours per week than men in unpaid care work, reducing their time for income-generating activities and personal nutrition management. Objective: Hand-wrist (HW) radiographs are considered the most accurate method for assessing pubertal growth spurts in orthodontics but have declined in use due to added radiation exposure and the expertise required. Cervical vertebral maturation staging (CVMS) is now commonly used, given the routine availability of lateral cephalograms. However, the validity of CVMS remains uncertain. A recent study reported only 66% inter-observer reliability across time periods (Ingersoll, 2024). This follow-up study aims to evaluate CVMS as a predictor of growth to guide clinical decision-making. Flooding is a major cause of destruction and economic loss affecting over 80 million people annually. Flooding during childhood can lead to educational setbacks with long term economic impacts. This study investigates the causal impacts of flood shocks on educational achievement and children's time use using the Young Lives Survey, a panel dataset surveying children in Peru over 19 years of childhood. This study finds that flooding causes a temporary positive "spike" in girls hours of labor immediately after a flood which subsides by three to six years after flooding. The additional hours of labor does not reduce hours of …

This study investigates the role of leadership in influencing student performance and retention at Loreto Convent Girls’ Secondary School, Matunda, Kenya. Prompted by a noticeable decline in academic achievement, student enrolment, and staff morale, the research explores how leadership practices, governance structures, and the adequacy of leadership preparation have contributed to the institution’s challenges. Framed by Authentic Leadership Theory, the study employs a qualitative case study methodology, drawing on semi-structured interviews with stakeholders, including students, alumni, teachers, parents, and members of the Board of Management.

This thesis examines how the relationship between limited access to education and economic opportunities contribute to the migration of young people out of this region. The qualitative research addresses two main questions: a) What challenges do young people in the Western Highlands of Guatemala face in accessing the education system and employment opportunities? And b) How does the lack of education and economic opportunities influence young people’s decision to migrate? Three focus groups were conducted with young individuals from the western highlands, and six semi-structured interviews were held with stakeholders and organizations working in this region.

This dissertation argues that Christian theology and practice are aided and enriched by a more complete understanding of reason by surveying recent studies and views in theology, philosophy, cognitive psychology, and cognitive linguistics. Since the Enlightenment, Christian theology has assumed widely the Enlightenment model of human reason as ideally acontextual, that is, free from constraints of contexts, and therefore universal, that is, applicable in all contexts. This study researched the six elements of the Holistic Framework for Professional Development (HFPD) to understand administrators’ and teachers’ perceived importance and how demographic variables impacted those perceptions. This was done to contribute to the current gap in the literature regarding how to design and carry out effective professional development. The quantitative survey research utilized exponential, non-discriminative snowball sampling to recruit participants. Fifteen administrators, 64 teachers, and six participants working in ‘other’ roles in their school participated. These participants were citizens of fifteen different countries and worked across eleven countries worldwide. Even given this diverse sample, the results of this …

With social media’s presence growing beyond personal use, speech-language pathology as a professional field is affected by social media as well. This study examined how social media is influencing clinical practice trends and evidence-based decision-making in speech-language pathology (SLP). A mixed-methods study including a survey (98 participants) to assess social media’s impact on SLP practices in the tri-state area (Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota), as well as a focus group (five participants) was used.

This thesis presents two distinct studies addressing critical aspects of autonomous vehicle control: lane centering via deep learning and lateral vehicle control using model predictive control. The first study explores end-to-end learning f or autonomous s teering command generation, focusing on lane centering. For shortest-path problems with a small number of integer transition costs, it is well-known that the performance of the classic A* algorithm can be improved by using bucketing to reduce priority queue overhead—in particular, by using a bucket queue data structure for the priority queue, instead of a binary heap. In this study we propose a deep learning method to optimize the classification of wood chip moisture content levels using the Vision Transformer and then ultimately increase the classification performance by creating synthetic images using the diffusion transformer model. In the first chapter of our study, we complete a detailed explanation of how the moisture content levels of 10 different wood chips were gathered ranging from 2 to 50$\%$. Challenges impacting Mississippi log trucking businesses include escalating production costs, labor shortages, aging ownership, and rising liability insurance premiums. These concerns are transmitted back to loggers, landowners, and the entire forest products industry, reducing their contributions to the state’s economy. Lack of current knowledge concerning the adaptation of Mississippi log trucking companies under adverse business conditions necessitated a statewide mixed-mode survey to determine the industry’s structure, the nature of liability insurance premiums, and business owner perceptions about driver hiring and profitability. Research suggests parent-child communication about sexual health can promote positive sexual health outcomes (e.g., Estrada-Martinez et al., 2020; Jayne et al., 2021); however, parent-child sexual health conversations are often infrequent and heteronormative (Estes, 2017). Few studies explore sexual health communication between LGBQ youth and their parents. This study explores previous experiences with parent-child sexual health communication between seven LGBQ young adults, aged 18 to 26, and four of their heterosexual mothers, to better understand parent-child sexual health communication and differences between parental-child reflections. Findings suggest LGBQ young adults and parents recall similar experiences, however, perceived discomfort and parental competency differently. …

Cold spray additively manufactured (CSAM) aluminum alloys exhibit heterogenous microstructures and mechanical properties, primarily due to high dislocation densities, sub-grain structures, and variation in inter-particle (intersplat) bonding arising from high-velocity particle impacts. Thermal post-processing has been shown to enhance intersplat bonding, reduce high residual stress concentrations, and lower dislocation densities, thereby improving the overall mechanical properties. Building on previous advancements with a mean-field viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) model, integrating intersplat boundary terms, Hall-Petch relations, and physically informed residual stress parameters, the current work extends the model to include precipitates and their effects. This study investigates the integration of small-diameter trees (SDT) into cross-laminated timber by developing cellular cross-laminated timber (CCLT) with corrugated panels in the transverse mid-layer. This innovation addresses sustainable building material demands while mitigating forest fire risks associated with SDT. The research progressed through three phases. First, parametric linear finite element modelling (FEM) examined corrugated geometry's influence on CCLT flexural stiffness. Based on these findings and manufacturing constraints, an optimal geometry was designed and fabricated.
