Metastasis is the main cause of cancer-related deaths, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, using clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), a tumor type with frequent lung metastases, we conduct an in vivo genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screen and identify HLF as a potent suppressor of lung metastasis. HLF depletion enhances ccRCC cell migration and lung metastasis, whereas HLF overexpression abrogates these effects. In ccRCC patients, HLF expression is reduced at metastatic sites and associates with epigenetic silencing mediated by the SWI/SNF ATPase subunit BRG1. HLF levels negatively correlate with migration potential in collagen. Mechanistically, HLF regulates LPXN expression, modulating the …

Research has increasingly recognized that empathy difficulties between autistic and neurotypical individuals are mutual. As empathy depends on shared understanding, identifying common ground between autistic and neurotypical children is important to foster greater empathy. This study examined reactivity patterns in autistic and neurotypical children to explore how similarities in reactivity might promote empathy across neurodiverse groups. Using a quantitative, survey-based design, parents of 56 children (19 autistic, 37 neurotypical; ages 5-11) completed a novel measure developed for this study, the Reactivity to Scenarios of Differing Intensity (RSDI), which measures children's reactivity to various social and environmental scenarios of differing intensity. …

Millions of people worldwide flee violent persecution each year, with more than 6.8 million estimated to have sought asylum in 2023 alone (United Nations High Commission on Refugees, 2025). Up to 40% of refugees and asylum-seekers are reported to be survivors of torture, with sexual torture one of the most commonly-reported means of torture, particularly among women and LGBTQ+ populations (Abu Suhaiban, 2019; Hopkinson et al., 2017; United Nations High Commission on Refugees, 2017). This thesis examines the phenomenon of code-mixing (CM) among speakers of Japanese as their first language (L1) and of English as their second language (L2) residing in Oregon, the United States. Unlike prior studies that focus on early bilinguals or individuals with mixed linguistic and cultural backgrounds, this study specifically target speakers who began learning English in formal settings through compulsory education or a cram school in Japan. After they had completed high school in Japan, they started living in English-speaking countries.

This study examined university counseling center therapists' perspectives on discussing nutrition in therapy. Despite the established link between nutrition and mental health, minimal research has explored how therapists approach these discussions. This study used interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to analyze semi-structured interviews with 10 university counseling center therapists from the Mountain West region. Four overarching themes emerged: a deficit view of nutrition, perceived utility, ethical practice, and holistic care. Wave energy converters (WECs) have gained significant attention as a promising renewable energy source. Optimal control strategies, crucial for maximizing energy extraction, have traditionally relied on linear models based on small motion assumptions. However, recent studies indicate that these models do not adequately capture the complex dynamics of WECs, especially when large motions are introduced to enhance power absorption. This thesis examines the cultural encounters and artistic interactions between Spanish Blue Division volunteers and the Soviet Union during World War II. While scholarship has long focused on the grand-scale looting conducted by the Nazis, Spain’s role—particularly that of the Blue Division—in wartime art theft and cultural exchange has been significantly underexplored. Sent by Franco’s fascist regime to support Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union, the Blue Division served not only as military auxiliaries but also as cultural intermediaries. I argue that Dewey had a kind of naturalistic or pragmatic epistemology already in his Experience and Nature which constitutes the Pragmatic Epistemology View. Dewey’s naturalistic epistemology is exemplified by his theory of “sense” and “signification” and as such is the first order consequence of Dewey’s second order qualitative naturalism. Instead of the classical epistemological question, “How is knowledge possible anyway, überhaupt?”, Dewey’s pragmatically reconstructed version of it would be “How do we make sense of the world that is around us?” Instead of the classical “theory of knowledge,” Dewey’s pragmatic epistemology can be seen as a theory …

A Ka-Band, 26.5–40 GHz, omnidirectional metamaterial-inspired antenna was designed, built, and tested to develop a simple printed compact (10.3 mm × 10.3 mm × 0.0787 mm) multiple-point sensor for air pollution monitoring. This Ka-band antenna generated a dual band at 27.49–29.74 GHz and 33.0–34.34 GHz. The VSWR values within the two bands are less than 1.5. The radiation and total efficiency are 97% and 92% in the first band and they are both 96% in the second band. The maximum gain is between 3.26 and 5.50 dBi and between 5.09 and 6.52 dBi in the first and second bands, respectively. …

The court granted the tenant's motion to dismiss the nonpayment petition, finding the rent demand defective due to the inclusion of substantial lump-sum charges lacking specific periods of accrual. While the court noted that fees and non-rent charges are permissible in co-op nonpayment cases if allowed by the proprietary lease, the large "Prior Agent" lump sums for maintenance, assessment, and parking rendered the demand insufficient to "fairly appraise" the tenant of the arrears, thus undermining the proceeding.
