In the composition of Angle of Repose (1971) Wallace Stegner drew heavily from the unpublished writings of Mary Hallock Foote (1847-1938)—a practice that shapes the novel in more ways than one. Stegner seems to have felt that the wholesale use of another’s writings is legitimate provided that appropriated text is worked into something original. Hence the strenuous originality of this tale of a Quaker woman whose incongruous marriage, following a loveless engagement, leads to an illicit dalliance which in turn leads directly to the death of her child. This paper explores the critical role of employer-provided health insurance in employee recruitment and retention, focusing on the nursing industry in Iowa. As labor markets grow increasingly competitive, especially in industries such as healthcare, non-wage benefits like health insurance can be an important factor influencing job choice and employee loyalty. This paper connects labor economic theory with employment data from Iowa nursing homes, to demonstrate that health insurance can significantly enhance employee satisfaction and reduce turnover and can do so more effectively than wage increases alone. As the title of this paper suggests, there are parallels between what happened to Big Tobacco and what could happen to Big Tech should its litigation strategy fail. Big Tech, like Big Tobacco before it, could stand to lose billions of dollars in judgments and settlements. More importantly, regulations—if allowed to take root—could upend Big Tech’s platform business model. Either outcome, or both, could fundamentally rewrite the relationship between Big Tech and its users. If Big Tech’s litigation strategy truly goes up in smoke, these colossal corporations could find themselves in a magnificent mess.

This report outlines the background and initial development stage of The Wellbeing Program Guide (wellbeingguide.acer.org), a comprehensive national resource aimed at supporting schools in selecting and implementing wellbeing programs that meet diverse contexts and student needs. Wellbeing is considered in its broadest sense, to include evidence-based mental health, alcohol and other drug, and suicide prevention programs, along with social and emotional learning. Developed collaboratively by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and Department of Health Tasmania, with advice from education and industry stakeholders, the Guide prioritised the needs of school communities in Tasmania, but also includes programs serving other …

Over the past several years, there has been a significant increase in the number of states allowing concealed weapons carry without a permit (constitutional carry), and an increase in the number of states that have enacted stand-your-ground laws. The purpose of the present study is to determine if the enactment of constitutional carry and stand-your-ground laws have had any statistically significant effects on incidents of defensive firearm use. Using a fixed effects, negative binomial model, it was found that both constitutional carry and stand-your-ground laws resulted in an increase in the number of casualties of defensive firearm uses (injured and …

This study compiles a comprehensive dataset on the occurrence, distribution, and potential impacts of Naturally Occurring Radionuclides (NORMs) near offshore oil and gas platforms. It encompasses data, including activities (Bq/l) and exposure levels (Msv), derived from various environmental matrices. A particular emphasis is placed on petroleum products and waste, such as produced water, scales, and sludges. The dataset contributes to a better understanding of the distribution of NORM wastes in marine environments, informs future radiological safety standards, contributes to the formulation of regulatory policies, and facilitates the design of mitigation strategies. What Went Right And What Went Wrong: A Multiple Case Study Of Firefighters Surviving Life-Threatening Situations, Peter J. Gushee

The present study explored the lived experiences of firefighters who survived life-threatening situations in burning buildings, examining how these experiences unfolded and the leadership structures that shaped those experiences. Employing A. P. Giorgi and Giorgi’s (2003) scientific phenomenological analysis, the present study identified the general structure of the firefighter survival experience, which was comprised of 11 constituents, highlighting survival as a dynamic, identity-bound process shaped by adaptive behaviors, internalized beliefs, and evolving situation-specific conditions. Leadership was found to operate at the systems, organizational, and group levels, enabling or constraining firefighter readiness, adaptation, and recovery. Part I of this article presents international, global, and national approaches to the right to education for transgender and gender-diverse persons. It then describes the Indian approach—the NALSA judgment and the Transgender Persons Act. Finally, it provides anecdotal insight into the lived experiences of transgender and gender-diverse persons and the marginalization they face.

Part II outlines: (i) the rationale of this study, (ii) the research methodology, and (iii) the questions in the right to information requests, which have formed the basis for investigating the landscape of education rights for transgender and gender-diverse students.

Synthesis Of A New Composite Nanomaterial Consisting Of Bentonite-Polyethylene Glycolphthalate, Tariq Yassin Mahmoud

Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences

In this study, a new composite material was characterized and prepared by polymerizing ethylene glycol located among bentonite layers with phthalic anhydride. The results showed that the polymer bonds with the clay structure through hydrogen bonding. The polymerization process led to the destruction of the three-dimensional crystal structure of the clay and the isolation of its layers in the form of two-dimensional nanoscale shells. The growth of the polymer around the isolated clay layers increased the total particle size at the microscopic scale.

This Article introduces and explains Climate Resilient Development (CRD), which is relied upon by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a primary method of managing climate change. CRD "integrates adaptation measures and their enabling conditions with mitigation to advance sustainable development for all." 1 CRD illuminates the close relationship between adaptive and mitigative development and land use law, particularly the authority delegated to local governments to regulate and incentivize private land development and conservation. In general, if an attorney makes a mistake, they can cure it by notifying the forum and filing the appropriate remedy. Immigration law, by contrast, stands alone by requiring the client (or a new attorney) to corroborate any mistake by filing a bar complaint against the first attorney. This requirement was established in a 1988 case, called Matter of Lozada. Much has been written on how the Lozada rule is unnecessary (a mistake does not need to be corroborated by a bar complaint and state bars are complaining about a deluge of unnecessary complaints for negligence) and harms the immigration …

This Article explores the ongoing transformation of state and local engagement in immigration-related rulemaking in the United States during the Second Trump Administration. The Article examines the myriad ways in which federal executive actions and state responses to those actions, alongside independent state actions and the federal government’s responses to those actions, are upending longestablished immigration law doctrines and shifting the borders of American federalism. This action research study focused on the identification of ways to improve the curriculum of freshman Writing Intensive Seminars using an innovative multimodal pedagogical methodology, the Digital Forum, in addition to formal papers and in-class writing.
