Maritime (Im)Mobility And Heterotopia: Jeju Island In South Korea, Taehee Kim Jul 2025

Maritime (Im)Mobility And Heterotopia: Jeju Island In South Korea, Taehee Kim

Kritika Kultura

Jeju Island, located on the remote periphery of the Korean peninsula and historically a site of exile, has become a popular destination for domestic migration over the past decade. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia as a methodological framework and taking Jeju Island as an example to reveal “islandness,” this paper discusses how the island is imagined and represented in Korean society. From this perspective, Jeju Island is regarded exteriorly as a place outside the ordinary and internally as a heterogeneous place. Further, in the heterotopia of “illusion” and “compensation,” a sojourn on Jeju Island is expected and experienced …

Love Is A Molecular Island, Chun-Mei Chuang Jul 2025

Love Is A Molecular Island, Chun-Mei Chuang

Kritika Kultura

When clarifying Spinoza’s concept of affect, Deleuze declares, “Hope as such or love as such represents nothing, strictly nothing.” In this paper, I approach the question of love by taking a detour of nonhuman affinity. First, I present this paper as an experimental becoming that weaves through heterogeneous lines of thinking and creating. Second, explicating the Deleuzian-Guattarian notion of “abstract machine” alongside Isabelle Stengers’s figure of “inappropriable unknown,” I argue for viewing the cosmos and art as interconnected abstract machines that foster novel realities and communities. Third, I weave planetary thinking with an interdisciplinary approach to propose a “planetary art …

Literary Study In The Era Of Artificial Intelligence In China, Fen Gao, Pengfei Zhang Jul 2025

Literary Study In The Era Of Artificial Intelligence In China, Fen Gao, Pengfei Zhang

Kritika Kultura

In view of the salient characteristics of technological innovation and human-machine symbiosis in the era of artificial intelligence, Chinese literary circles have purveyed a productive exploration of “literary study in the era of artificial intelligence.” Chinese scholars’ innovation of literary theory consists of three characteristics. First, they have established the original theory of “brain text,” systematically analyzed the definition, formation mechanism, and relationship between “brain text” and literature, language, text, and cognition, and applied this theory to literary criticism. Second, on the basis of sorting out and summarizing the core viewpoints of Western digital humanities theory, Chinese scholars have carried …

Ex-Slave Narrative - Ann J. Edwards, Sheldon F. Gauthier, Ann J. Edwards

Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration in the State of Texas, Fort Worth City Guide and History Draft Records

A transcript of an Ex-Slave Narrative interview conducted by Sheldon F. Gauthier for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project in the 1930s with Ann J. Edwards. Edwards was born into slavery in 1856 on the Arlington County, Virginia plantation of John Cook. In 1858, Cook moved to Washington, D. C. and emancipated those he enslaved. After her parents split and her mother died in 1861, Edwards was adopted by Richard H. Cain, the minister of an African Methodist church in D. C. She describes the conditions in D. C. during the Civil War, with a focus on runaway slaves …

489 Mm Realty Llc V. Zelaya

All Decisions

The court dismissed the landlord's holdover petition because the predicate notice was improperly served. The affidavit of service stated it was personally served on "Albert Zelaya," but the notice was actually delivered to "Albert Zelaya Jr." Citing the **strict compliance** standard for personal service, the court found the name discrepancy was a fatal defect. The landlord's cross-motion to amend the affidavit was denied because it was not supported by an affidavit from someone with personal knowledge, nor did the landlord demonstrate that the respondent had attempted to evade service.

558-566 Parkside Llc V. Gardner

All Decisions

In a non-payment proceeding, the tenant's motion to interpose an amended answer and seek discovery was granted. The court found that the tenant met the "modified ample need" test for discovery and, because the alleged overcharge occurred within the six-year look-back period, no allegation of fraud was required. The court ordered the landlord to produce responsive documents, limited to a six-year period from the date the answer was filed. The landlord was also instructed to provide a "Jackson affidavit" if any documents could not be located.

“Falling Short Of Our Humanity”: Shame And Queer Catholic Families, M.T. Davila Jul 2025

“Falling Short Of Our Humanity”: Shame And Queer Catholic Families, M.T. Davila

Religious & Theological Studies Faculty Publications

Queer Catholic Families (QCF) negotiate a complicated landscape of belonging and exclusion in the church that they love. In this dynamic, shame figures as a theological and moral qualifier of their experience when observed through the lens of the Catholic Church's teaching on sexuality and gender. Understanding how shame is experienced in these families, how it deepens a rift between families and the community, and how families find ways to nourish and preserve their links to the Church, ought to be a primary ethical and pastoral task of the Church.

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani Jul 2025

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani

Dissertations and Theses

In the build-up to war, national governments utilize propaganda to gather public support for the war effort. In some instances, propaganda campaigns are conducted but war does not occur. This begs the question as to why war follows propaganda campaigns in some cases, but not in others. I argue that propaganda efforts that lead to war can be generally characterized through three major strategies based on a patriotic participatory social structure, a claim to moral authority, and the blending of individual concepts of the state, government and nation. In this study, I analyze the major historical case studies of the …
