Biodiversity Conservation Depends On The Expansion Of Taxonomy And Systematics Research, Luis A. Ruedas, Scott L. Gardner
Biodiversity Conservation Depends On The Expansion Of Taxonomy And Systematics Research, Luis A. Ruedas, Scott L. Gardner
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite mammals constituting fewer than 0.3% of all described species, their conservation is compelling for a number of reasons. They contribute to biodiversity and are important in maintaining and regulating ecological communities. Many mammals have significant cultural and economic value, serving as sources of food, medicine, and tourism revenue. Furthermore, the conservation of mammals often leads to the protection of entire habitats, benefiting numerous other species and preserving ecosystem services that are critical for human well- being. Humans share a unique evolutionary history with other mammal species, making their preservation important for scientific research, education, and understanding of our own …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Passive acoustic monitoring techniques are useful for studying vocally active marine species, particularly in remote and difficult to access areas. In this study, three months of acoustic recordings were collected off Egmont Atoll, Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean to detect, characterise, and investigate temporal variability of delphinid whistles. A subsample (3.6% of the total dataset) was used to manually annotate whistles and test automated whistle detectors. Higher frequency whistles (6-25 kHz, n = 126) were manually classified into six categories: upsweep (56%), convex (19%), downsweep (13%), concave (5%), sine (4%), and constant frequency (3%). An automated whistle detector …

Horticulture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Grafting is an effective horticultural technique that significantly enhances disease resistance and stress tolerance in watermelon. This review systematically summarizes the types of rootstocks used in watermelon grafting and analyzes the effects of grafting on plant responses to biotic stresses, such as viral and fungal pathogens, root-knot nematodes infections, and abiotic stresses, including drought, temperature extremes, and salinity. Furthermore, it discusses the changes in fruit quality and explores the underlying mechanisms associated with graft-induced resistance. By synthesizing recent research advances, this review aims to offer valuable insights and practical references for improving resistance and promoting sustainable production in cucurbit and …
Elementary Teachers' Challenges To Implement Letrs In A Local Alabama School District, Jessica Morton
Elementary Teachers' Challenges To Implement Letrs In A Local Alabama School District, Jessica Morton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) professional development provided elementary teachers with a new form of instruction, third-grade reading scores remain below proficiency levels on the Alabama state test. Guided by Vygotsky’s theory of social constructivism, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore elementary teachers’ challenges of implementing LETRS in a local Alabama school district. Two research questions addressed the challenges of and suggestions for implementing LETRS. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 10 elementary teachers in local school districts who were trained in LETRS, implemented LETRS in classroom instruction, and …
School Counselors Lived Experiences With Executing Child-Centered Play Therapy In High-Diversity Elementary Schools, Ruth Devito
School Counselors Lived Experiences With Executing Child-Centered Play Therapy In High-Diversity Elementary Schools, Ruth Devito
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Minority students are often omitted from social, economic, cultural, and political life due to ethnicity or poverty, which increases their risk of adverse childhood experiences, such as abuse or neglect, and increases their likelihood of discrimination that can obstruct their normal childhood development, including academic performance. Child-centered play therapy (CCPT) is a multiculturally appropriate approach that creates a safe and nonjudgmental environment, supporting adjustment and coping. However, many school counselors are not using CCPT. The research question was as follows: What are the lived experiences of school counselors who use CCPT in their work at high-diversity elementary schools? This study …

Noblest Enterprise: Jimmy Carter And The Fight To Establish The U.S. Department Of Education, Stephen R. Merritt
Noblest Enterprise: Jimmy Carter And The Fight To Establish The U.S. Department Of Education, Stephen R. Merritt
Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
This paper seeks to survey some of the political forces which clashed in the late 1970s as the U.S. Department of Education was created. It also seeks to posit that President Jimmy Carter’s personal views about schooling in America had more to do with his tireless fight to establish the new department than previous scholars have indicated. Several previous papers on this subject emphasized Carter’s political debt to the National Education Association and that union’s demands that a separate department be created but none focus on Carter’s personal attachment to the ideals of education in a democratic society.

Charge Asymmetry Phenomenon For The Leptonically Decaying W Γ Pair At Nnlo Qcd, Kadi̇r Saygin
Charge Asymmetry Phenomenon For The Leptonically Decaying W Γ Pair At Nnlo Qcd, Kadi̇r Saygin
Turkish Journal of Physics
The paper presents for the first time a phenomenological assessment which focuses on the charge asymmetry phenomenon for the W γ production process with subsequent leptonic decay modes W+γ → l+νlγ and W−γ → l−νl¯γ in proton-proton (pp) collisions. Charge asymmetry for the leptonic W γ process is predicted by the inclusion of genuine next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections in the QCD perturbation theory. NNLO predictions of asymmetry distributions are assessed for the key observables, including the decay lepton and photon pseudorapidities ηl and ηγ, …

When Creative Practice Becomes Research, James Kelly
When Creative Practice Becomes Research, James Kelly
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This seminar examines approaches to practice and research within an academic context, with particular reference to the academic scholarship framework at SAE University College. It introduces distinctions between creative practice and research, demonstrating how disciplinary practice may be transformed into recognised scholarly output when it is contextualised within a theoretical framework, critically reflective, and disseminated for peer engagement.
Drawing on methodologies by Candy (2006), Skains (2018), and Barrett (2019), the presentation outlines methodological models for Practice-as-Research (PaR), Practice-Based Research (PBR), Practice-Led Research, Research-Led Practice, and hybrid approaches. It highlights the iterative and open-ended character of creative research processes, in which …

Adjudicating Atrocity: Reading Hitesh Verma V State Of Uttarakhand As A "Landmark" Case In The Judicial Discourse On Caste Violence, Tejaswi Chhatwal
Socio-Legal Review
This article critically examines the Supreme Court’s judgment in Hitesh Verma v State of Uttarakhand (2020) and argues for reading it as a “landmark trial” in the judicial undoing of reform—namely, the statutory changes introduced by the 2016 Amendment to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. Existing socio-legal scholarship on atrocity jurisprudence has shown that the judicial understanding of caste violence and doctrinally instituted evidentiary standards have historically operated to invisibilise caste from crime’s framework. As a result, most instances of caste-based discrimination and violence have not been named as offences of “atrocity” under the …

Bandung And The Future Of Africa’S Pasts, Rabiat Akande, Olufemi Elias
Articles & Book Chapters
The idea of decolonization that animated the spirit of the 1955 Bandung Conference continues to power imaginations of an alternative to the world Bandung inhabited. In this essay, we look upon Africa from Bandung, and simultaneously from Africa to Bandung, to recover an “otherwise”—a seeing of the future from Africa’s pasts. In the future envisioned in Bandung and beyond, flag independence was regarded as the first stop in the project of decolonization.1 The conference was to provide both “guidance to mankind … [on] the way which it must take to attain safety and peace” and “evidence that Asia and Africa …

In this nuisance holdover proceeding, the landlord moved to strike several of the tenant's objections and affirmative defenses. The court denied striking the tenant's service-related objections, finding that afternoon/evening service attempts might not constitute "reasonable application" if the landlord knew of the tenant's schedule. It also preserved the tenant's defense that a recertification notice could imply waiver and the possibility of a post-judgment right to cure nuisance, citing equitable factors. However, the court granted striking objections that the termination notice was vague and that a notice to cure was required, holding that the notice adequately described the alleged conditions and …
Goals Reconsidered: From Brute Prelusory States Of Affairs To The Lusory Complexity Of Sport, Francisco Javier López Frías
Goals Reconsidered: From Brute Prelusory States Of Affairs To The Lusory Complexity Of Sport, Francisco Javier López Frías
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
In this paper, I examine Bernard Suits’ conceptualization of goals in his influential definition of gameplay, focusing on how his account falls short of capturing the complexity of sporting practices. Suits famously describes games as voluntary attempts to overcome unnecessary obstacles in achieving an identifiable state of affairs. By referring to this state of affairs as the prelusory goal of games, he frames gameplay as structured teleologically around this goal, converting it into the most fundamental element of his notion of gameplay. Although elegant and very intuitive, this conception of games raises tensions when applied to the complex, multilayered activities …
Rejecting The Unitary Executive, Christine Kexel Chabot
Rejecting The Unitary Executive, Christine Kexel Chabot
Utah Law Review
Critics have dismissed originalism as an empty methodology. They claim it is incapable of resolving our most important constitutional disputes, including the debate over the unitary executive. While unitary scholars assert that Article II grants the President an indefeasible power to remove all subordinates at will, their purportedly originalist interpretation conflicts with significant historical evidence. The Supreme Court’s apparent move toward an indefeasible removal power has proceeded as though this underlying historical indeterminacy is either irrelevant or does not exist. This Article offers a new way to bridge the disconnect between historical disputes over the unitary executive and public meaning …

The Theoretical Investigation Of The Stability And The Racemization Of Pristine, Functionalized, And Doped Expanded Helicenes, Bedi̇rhan Öztürk, Berkay Sütay
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The Hückel aromatic and Möbius aromatic compounds, consisting of topologically different arrangements of adjacent benzene rings in the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) family, have long attracted interest in both synthesis and theoretical chemistry. Among these, [n]-azene and [n]-circulene derivatives are more thoroughly explored due to their simple architectures and more accessible synthesis pathways. However, there are active ongoing studies on the synthesis of both [n]-helicene and expanded [n]-helicene structures, as well as Möbius circulenes, which are Möbius isomers of [n]-circulenes. In this regard, there is limited information available on both the experimental and theoretical characterization of the synthesized molecules. In …

Relative Stare Decisis, Andrew Coan
Relative Stare Decisis, Andrew Coan
Utah Law Review
Stare decisis stands at a crossroads. The Supreme Court has recently overturned landmark precedents on abortion rights, affirmative action, and administrative deference, while signaling its willingness to reconsider other long-settled doctrines. Amid this tumult, one principle appears to command broad consensus: Stare decisis carries heightened force in statutory cases, where Congress can override the Court’s decisions through ordinary legislation, and less force in constitutional cases, where override can only be accomplished through the onerous Article V amendment process. Yet this doctrine of “relative stare decisis” rests on remarkably fragile foundations. The principal justifications offered by its adherents are underdeveloped or …
