Criminal Records As Political Capital: Renegotiating Ex-Convict Labels To Acquire Village Head Positions In East Java, Indonesia, Mochamad Iqbal Jatmiko, Muhamad Supraja

Unlike other new democracies, the political system in post-authoritarian Indonesia has recently allowed ex-convicts to run for election. This qualitative case study examines how ex-prisoners serving as village heads in Probolinggo Regency, East Java, discursively reframed their criminal past as informal symbolic capital to win rural political contestations and effectively execute village bureaucratic functions. Contrary to previous analyses highlighting collateral consequences that disqualify ex-criminals’ political prospects, we report that interactive dialogue has successfully turned negative reputations into collectively consented territorial patronage, specifically within crime-prone village contexts. Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

In this research, the application of two scalarization methods, namely the conic scalarization method and the $\varepsilon$-constraint method, is investigated within the context of a multi-objective optimization problem. These methods are used to address the challenge of assigning nurses to patients on a hospital unit during a shift. The two objective functions of this assignment problem are based on patient workload metrics and unit-related travel distance measures. The proposed solution approach demonstrates the ability to generate solutions that eluded the previous mathematical programming techniques that relied on simplistic weightings of conflicting objective functions. Background: Underlying socio-economic and health burden may variably impact delirium presentation among older adults. We characterized differences in patient factors related to social marginalization and studied their effects on delirium occurrence and hospital outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a 7-year retrospective analysis of older adults (aged ≥ 70 years) who systematically underwent screening for delirium at an 8-hospital healthcare system. Our primary exposure included patient characteristics related to demographics and social marginalization. Multivariable logistic regression models were built to identify factors associated with increased odds of delirium occurrence, either (1) present-on-admission (D-POA) or (2) hospital-acquired (HAD). This article deals with the relationship between social variables and dialect word usage in Shaki, Azerbaijan. The research employed a quantitative correlational research design. The data was collected from 176 informants, who were native speakers of the Shaki dialect of Azerbaijani, via an online questionnaire. Twenty dialect words from the Shaki region were included in the closed-ended questionnaire. The respondents were instructed to provide demographic information about themselves and to indicate whether they used the selected terms in their everyday speech. Despite their cultural and geographical differences, both novels depict heroines who are seeking personal autonomy and emotional fulfillment. However, they ultimately succumb to the rigid constraints of patriarchy. Gregory Burke’s Black Watch, which premiered at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival, focuses on the experiences of Scottish soldiers deployed to Iraq in 2003. The play makes extensive use of dark humor by juxtaposing laughter and pain, valor and absurdity, military and civilian life, in order to reveal the contradictions of contemporary militarism. Rather than celebrating patriotism or sacrifice, Burke undermines the romanticized narratives of heroism through profanity, abrupt shifts in tone, and mock-heroic scenes. Academia, think tanks, and international media have largely adopted the Turkish government’s narrative that the events of July 15, 2016, constituted a failed coup attempt. This dominant framing has shaped policy responses and scholarly interpretations despite the authoritarian context in which it was crafted. Many Turkish and Western scholars accepted the Turkish government’s narrative that the July 15 events were a failed coup attempt. They often rely on surface-level indicators and official statements without critically engaging with available evidence. This article reimagines teacher reflection not as data to be analyzed, but as a relational and affective space to be inhabited. Drawing on the principles of auto-theory and post-qualitative inquiry, we approach a familiar dataset of Vietnamese English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher reflection through a method of writing-with, responding not through interpretation, but through resonance, hesitation, and companionship. Rather than coding or categorizing the texts, we lingered with their silences, rhythms, and rhetorical composure. Soil nailing is an in-situ ground reinforcement technique widely used for excavation support and slope stabilisation. Finite element modelling of soil-nailed structures fundamentally represents a three-dimensional (3D) soil-structure interaction problem. Traditionally, nails are simplified into equivalent rectangular elements (“smeared” technique) using geogrid or plate elements in 2D simulations. Peat soil is problematic in geotechnical engineering due to its high compressibility, low shear strength, and low bearing capacity, making it prone to settling under loads. Effective soil treatment is essential, as traditional removal and replacement methods are unsustainable. This review evaluates the compressibility behaviour of peat stabilised with various stabilising agents, including the conventional and non-conventional additives. Soil stabilisation using chemical additives, including cement, lime, fly ash, gypsum, and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), is widely applied. As early as 1910, journalists from around the United States reported on the cause-and- effect relationship between a criminal’s physical appearance, their offenses, and the plastic surgeons willing to help them. These surgeons were interested in changing the physical “causes” of criminality to sever the mental roots of crime, inferiority, and anti-social attitude. This paper examines the use of plastic surgery programs as reform in prison through the lens of popular newspaper and journal articles and argues that public perception and reaction revealed in these articles shaped the prison program’s journey from its underground beginning to its eventual demise.

The purpose of this article is to explain how acts of violence influenced the media’s description of the Irish Republican Army and Chechen insurgencies and how the label of ‘terrorist’ affected the perception of the Anglo-Irish and Russo-Chechen conflicts. Quantitative data from the New York Times and International Newsstream databases are used to examine the change in word frequency to describe the IRA and Chechen fighters across a twelve-year span and four-month span before and after certain international events.

Background. HPV vaccination is not required for the United States (U.S.) medical residents, despite their potentially high risk of iatrogenic exposure to the virus. We aim to evaluate vaccination status, patterns of HPV vaccine uptake, and perceived risk of iatrogenic infection among residents in high-exposure-risk specialties.

Methods. This Article examines the history and original intent of fiscal constitutions in the United States, providing helpful context for their usefulness today. It argues that, due to the rigidity of states’ fiscal constitutions, they are ultimately ineffective at preventing state and local governments from incurring more and more debt. A growing majority of courts have broadly accepted travel-plan questions (and their follow-up questions) as a qualifying category of traffic-mission inquiries under Rodriguez, leaving officers with a clear pathway from pretextual traffic stop—to extended discussion about vehicle occupant activities outside the traffic violation—to drug dog sniff—to vehicle search.
