Education is a cornerstone theme in Johanna Spyri’s treasured novel Heidi, which tells the story of a young girl living in the Swiss Alps with her grandfather. Heidi has many triumphs throughout her youth, but these are not without hardship with regard to educational attainment. This paper examines how the educational experiences described in Heidi fits into its historical context, having been set in the 1870s-80s in Switzerland and Germany. Legal precedents, labor relations, and a mountainous environment set the stage for educational access and success for both Heidi and her friend Peter. This essay chronicles the intellectual voyage of an ordinary language philosopher within a European Union-funded project (A-STEP 2030) using quantitative social science methods to define sustainability competencies for engineering education. Nitrate contamination in shallow drinking water wells is an urgent and persistent concern for agricultural regions and disadvantaged communities worldwide. As viable options for the large-scale removal of nitrates from groundwater remain elusive, greater emphasis has been placed on stakeholder-based integrative approaches, yet few have been developed, and fewer evaluated for their effectiveness. Drowsy driving, particularly due to microsleep episodes, is a significant cause of traffic accidents, with existing solutions being often too costly or limited for widespread adoption. This project addresses this critical gap by developing a cost-effective, real-time Internet of Things (IoT)-based anti-microsleep alarm system. The system's development followed a fourstage process: Planning, Design, Development, and Evaluation. During the development phase, the system was built in Python using OpenCV and dlib for real-time facial analysis and the Haar Cascade algorithm for efficient facial feature detection. The article examines the phenomenon of extreme sentences—defined as those exceeding 200 years—in the federal criminal justice system, raising critical questions about their rationale, proportionality, and alignment with traditional theories of punishment. Through an empirical study of 55 such cases, the analysis highlights the role of mandatory minimums, cognitive biases, and an exclusionist mindset in driving these sentences. It critiques the normalization of extreme penalties and their implications for mass incarceration, deterrence, and human dignity.

The stability of electoral outcomes is a cornerstone of democratic legitimacy, yet real-world elections increasingly exhibit volatility driven by dynamic voter populations and shifting preferences. By treating elections as a function f(x) where x represents voter choice, we can study the conditioning of election outcome functions under perturbations, analogous to sensitivity analysis of numerical solvers. This paper investigates the mechanisms underlying instability in elections when voters and their beliefs evolve over time, focusing on the effects of conditioning decisions on anticipated future changes. Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper introduces a cryptographic technique combining the Kharrat-Toma Transform and congruence modulo operators to improve the security of message encryption. The proposed model uses the mathematical properties of the Kharrat-Toma Transform and its inverse for direct scrambling and unscrambling processes while embedding sufficient complexity to resist modern cryptanalytic attacks. The model is subjected to experimental tests, including encryption quality analysis, Shannon entropy, and NIST randomness tests, in order to prove the strength of the model. Through encryption quality analysis, symbol frequencies in the ciphertext are masked heavily from having much correlation between plaintext and ciphertext. Entropy values indicate near-theoretical …

Or, if we do think about noise pollution, we don't think of it as a central piece of federal environmental law. This Article, however, demonstrates that noise law is, or was, central to American environmental law, and it offers insights into how environmental protection and administrative governance work today.

The collective work arising from the symposium reflects both the breadth and complexity of contemporary thinking on gender and taxation. In many cases, the symposium essays push the boundaries of the field in new and generative directions. Background: Neck pain is common in migraine patients, occurring during all migraine phases and between attacks. It can be a migraine symptom, trigger or a coexisting condition, and is associated with greater disability and poorer treatment response. There is evidence that neck pain associated with headaches can be frequently incorrectly diagnosed as a cervical disorder rather than migraine, resulting in a lack of appropriate treatment. Accurately assessing the connection between neck pain and migraine is crucial for effective treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the rigidity of will-making laws requiring in-person witnessing. Jurisdictions responded differently: some introduced temporary measures, others implemented permanent reforms allowing remote witnessing. This article compares responses in England and Wales, selected Australian states, Singapore, and Hong Kong SAR, tracing developments toward potential recognition of electronic wills. The central argument is that law reform should balance accessibility with safeguards against fraud and undue influence, avoiding overly burdensome formalities that deter compliance. The article concludes by examining how national digital identity systems could be used for the execution of electronic wills.

The Singapore President's role is not only ceremonial: from 1991, it has encompassed the substantive function of serving as a guardian of public reserves and the integrity of the public service. A person must meet certain qualifying criteria in order to run in a Presidential election. This article focuses on one set of qualifying criteria, namely, the "service criteria": the requirement that candidates have had certain experience in serving in certain roles in the public sector or the private sector. A broad coalition has formed to oppose restrictive zoning laws. According to this coalition, zoning is largely to blame for the current housing crisis facing the United States, and to increase the housing supply, cities across the country should embrace upzoning—that is, loosen zoning laws to allow for greater density. Like many other well-intentioned policy changes, upzoning has the possibility for negative unintended consequences. Among those consequences is noise pollution. This paper examines the theological and spiritual meaning of the vow of obedience in religious life through the teachings of Pope John Paul II. It presents obedience as Christ-centered, Trinitarian, ecclesial, and pneumatological—understood as a free and loving response modeled on Christ. Reframed as dialogue grounded in listening, discernment, and mutual trust, obedience is shown to foster authentic freedom and communion. This inaugural address reflects on the mission, achievements, and future directions of the Loyola School of Theology as it celebrates sixty years as a theological school and twenty-five years as an ecclesiastical faculty. It highlights institutional milestones, including internationalization, academic collaborations, research initiatives, and program expansion. The address emphasizes LST’s commitment to contextual theologizing in Asia, interdisciplinary engagement, and pastoral relevance. It also identifies emerging challenges, including artificial intelligence, integral ecology, synodality, and safeguarding. Ultimately, it calls the LST community to collaborative discernment in shaping a new strategic plan that strengthens theological formation for the Church’s mission.

This article explores the application of paraconsistent logic to one of theology’s enduring challenges: the metaphysics of the Incarnation. The claim that Christ is both fully human and fully divine, as defined by the Council of Chalcedon, presents a significant ontological dilemma, as these two natures are inherently incompatible and mutually exclusive according to classical logic: on the one hand, human nature is defined by finitude, mutability, and moral fallibility, and divine nature is understood as infinite, immutable, and morally impeccable, on the other.
