Beyond Unemployment: An Investigation Of Social Policies To Empower Workers In A Changing World Of Work, Lukas Lehner

This dissertation analyzes social policies aimed at supporting unemployed workers, scrutinizing consequences of such policies on facilitating access to training, employment, and in improving wages, health, and well-being amidst a changing world of work. Central to the research are two field experiments at scale (chapters 2 and 3), designed in collaboration with implementation partners, uniquely leveraging high-quality administrative records and extensive survey data collected over three years. Chapter two tests the idea of guaranteed employment in a natural context by carefully evaluating a job guarantee scheme, which highlights the psychosocial value of employment. The East Okeechobee Region in Southeast Florida lacks a comprehensive regional study of sharks and shark remains found in archaeological contexts. Previous studies in the region have compared materials to those of other large regional centers outside the East Okeechobee Area. This study examined materials collected from previous excavations at four sites from coastal Palm Beach County to add to the understanding of the ways sharks were utilized in the past. Shark species found at all four sites indicate that the people of the region targeted sharks as a resource for tool or decoration production. Examination of Shark teeth and …

Contemporary events on university campuses have spotlighted the perceived conflict between free speech and safe spaces. While both values are widely acknowledged as essential, reconciling them in practice remains difficult. In this article, we argue that universities should not be viewed as singular entities but as a constellation of distinct spaces, each with its own normative context. The appropriate balance between safety and speech depends on the specific functions and values of each space. We first survey philosophical literature on campus speech and safety, noting the often-implicit acknowledgment of spatial diversity. Next, we introduce guiding questions to assist in evaluating …

RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has emerged as a powerful tool for resolving variants of uncertain significance (VUSs), particularly those affecting gene expression and splicing. However, most reference datasets and diagnostic protocols employ relatively modest sequencing depths (∼50-150 million reads), which may fail to detect low-abundance transcripts and rare splicing events critical for accurate diagnosis. We evaluated the diagnostic and translational utility of ultra-high-depth (up to ∼1 billion unique reads) RNA-seq in four clinically accessible tissues using the Ultima sequencing platform. Underutilizing trauma-informed approaches in correctional rehabilitation has had detrimental consequences, particularly for gang-involved populations. Theories of personality, responsivity, and stress suggest that gang-affiliated individuals, shaped by coercive environments, may develop psychological reactions such as fear, guilt, and moral shame that contribute to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury (MI). This study examined whether gang role, psychopathy, and perpetration predicted PTSD and MI among 70 incarcerated adult males. Participants completed the Moral Injury Outcome Scale (MIOS), the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), and the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP). Two hierarchical regressions were conducted. This dissertation adopts a “for Black women, by Black women” approach to examine how Black women’s lived experiences and performances of racialized gender become communicative acts of agency as they navigate the intersecting challenges of race and gender within pedagogical contexts.

Grounded in Black Feminist Pedagogy and expanded through Trap Feminism, this study celebrates the complexity of racialized gender performances and theorizes them as intentional communicative acts of resistance. George Orwell in his classic Down and Out in Paris and London described the hotel industry’s work system as an elaborate caste system, with a prestige graded system to that of a soldier. The elaborate management system placed the manager at the top, followed by the maître d’hôtel, head waiter, head cook, chef du personnel, other cooks, waiters, laundress, apprentices, the plongeurs (menial tasks in the restaurant), chambermaids and cafetières, in that order. In 1901, Ireland had the largest publicly funded professional extension service – agricultural scientists helping farmers to farm better – relatively, in the world. Utilising a wide range of historical sources and contemporary data, this paper provides a snapshot of the education and work of Irish advisors and their extension activities then and now. It identifies what has changed and what has not, showing key influences on Ireland’s current advisory services. Education for advisors 100 years ago was characterised by gender segregation, with less capacity and diversity. Continuity in the work of advisors then and now is shown in a …
