The Sorrows Of Modern Subjectivity: Capital, Infinity Disease, And Werther's Hysterical Neurois, Christopher Altamura

In this article I analyze Werther, the protagonist of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. I argue that Werther and his sorrows must be understood within the context of the unique configuration of alienation(s) present in modern societies, characterized by the sui generis combination of capital, egoism and anomie, and asceticism. Further, I argue the sociologically alienating conditions of modern societies create neurotic subjects of repression who lack compensatory symbols of moral worth, which drives them to pursue equivalent signification via fantasy. The Master's Race: Phallic Whiteness In "The Young Savages", Graham Cassano

This essay examines two parallel, historically contemporaneous, depictions of the Freudian master-slave dialectic. John Frankenheimer's first film, The Young Savages (1961), reconstructs Hank Bell's (Burt Lancaster) repressed transformation from Italian racial other into a white ethnic. In doing so, the film approaches the possibility that race itself may be a kind of social construction. To get at this notion, the film explores the meaning of race in an overtly psychoanalytic language. In fact, The Young Savages echoes the argument of Jacques Lacan's nearly contemporaneous essay, "The subversion of the subject and the dialectic of desire in the Freudian unconscious." Lacan's …

The neglect of Goethe, his work in general, and Faust in particular, in English-speaking countries, is notorious. While Shakespeare's plays have been prominent and widely performed in German-speaking countries, the same is not true for Goethe in the English-speaking world. Focusing non-exclusively on Faust, and cutting a link to Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus, I will endeavor to delineate problematic aspects of American ideology, and what it would take, within U.S. sociology, to be cognizant of the latter.   Georg Lukacs wrote about Goethe and Faust, and so did Theodor W. Numeracy

Numeracy is a critical competency for academic and everyday functioning. This study investigates the key factors associated with students’ numeracy skills by employing decision tree algorithms as a data mining technique. The dataset used in this study is educational assessment data from Indonesia. Utilizing a dataset comprising 6,953 entries and 60 variables from Education Report, the research adopts an exploratory approach involving data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, and decision tree model construction. The findings reveal that students’ literacy skills serve as the most dominant predictor of numeracy proficiency, emerging as the root node in the decision tree structure. Additional associated …

Increasing plastic pollution has become a critical environmental issue, leading to  challenges in management. Specifically, microplastics (MPs) are of particular concern  because they can persist in aquatic ecosystems and adversely affect marine  organisms. The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of MPs  in the soft tissues of Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from the Mersin  Viranşehir coastal area. Eyelids play a crucial role in protecting the eyes of vertebrates; however, certain  reptile species, such as Ophisops elegans, completely lack movable eyelids. In this  study, we present the first video-documented evidence of a blink-like reflex in O.  elegans, captured through endoscopic field observations and corroborated by laboratory video analysis. The observed movement consisted of a brief convex  deformation of the ocular surface, lasting approximately 0.3 s and resembling a blink  despite the presence of a fixed transparent brille. Widely regarded as a landmark in bankruptcy scholarship, Professor David Skeel’s Debt’s Dominion charts the evolution of American corporate bankruptcy law and the forces that have governed it.1 In this seminal work, Skeel traces federal bankruptcy laws from their roots in the U.S. Constitution through their development over the twentieth century, detailing the political dynamics that shaped their scope and administration. This thesis critically examines the legal paradoxes embedded within transitional justice (TJ) discourse, using the Nürnberg and Saddam Hussein trials as case studies to interrogate the complex relationship between justice and the rule of law in TJ discourse. It highlights the inherent tension between forward-looking societal reforms and the pursuit of backward-looking justice, challenging the foundational assumptions of TJ as a universal tool for justice and peace. It also questions the validity and credibility of "transition" as a phase between the past and the future. It contends that TJ, driven by Western liberal epistemic foundations, functions as an exclusionary …

Over the past half-century, rapid technological change and globalization have reshaped innovation and intellectual property, yet the foundational international agreements anchoring the global patent system have remained essentially unchanged. The drafters of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) viewed these agreements as dynamic instruments that, through procedural coordination, would rationalize international patent administration. The Paris Convention has resisted reform for decades, however, while the PCT has failed to achieve its goals of reducing examination workloads and fostering worksharing among national patent offices. Designing efficient mechanisms for moving mechanical assemblies requires the use of materials with well-defined mechanical responses. Appropriate methods are needed to characterize these mechanical responses. Mechanical characterization of soft materials is critical in the high strain rate regime where intuition from manipulating a material at low rates fails to translate to applications including impact protection, tire traction, and sound damping. Here, transient grating spectroscopy (TGS) is used to measure wave propagation for soft elastomers and hydrogels. TGS is a non-destructive and non-contact optoacoustic technique that enables high strain rate measurements of the bulk modulus, a measure of a material's resistance …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

While quantum measurements have been shown to constitute a resource for operating quantum thermal machines, the nature of the energy exchanges involved in the interaction between system and measuring apparatus is still under debate. In this work, we show that a microscopic model of the apparatus is necessary to unambiguously determine whether quantum measurements provide energy in the form of heat or work. We illustrate this result by considering a measurement-based refrigerator, made of a double quantum dot embedded in a two-terminal device, with the charge of one of the dots being continuously monitored.
