Habitat Destruction: The Where Of Biodiversity Law, Andrew W. Torrance Ph.D., Bill Tomlinson Ph.D. Jan 2026

Habitat Destruction: The Where Of Biodiversity Law, Andrew W. Torrance Ph.D., Bill Tomlinson Ph.D.

Akron Law Review

The existence of appropriate habitats is essential to the continued existence of all species with which humans share the Earth. However, humans are currently enacting changes around the globe--anthropogenic environmental disruption--that threaten the habitats of many species. In this article, we first summarize existing habitat-related law in various countries, including legal designation of areas for protection (e.g., national parks), laws that enable conservation organizations to purchase but not utilize development rights, and international treaties such as the Convention on Biological Diversity or the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. We then propose a suite of novel approaches …

The Law Through The King U.S. (Procedural) Judicial Activism From A European Perspective, Cesare Cavallini Jan 2026

The Law Through The King U.S. (Procedural) Judicial Activism From A European Perspective, Cesare Cavallini

Akron Law Review

This essay explores the phenomenon of judicial activism in the United States, focusing particularly on procedural aspects, from a comparative perspective influenced by the civil law tradition, especially the Italian legal system. While American legal discourse often criticizes judicial activism as an overreach by the judiciary—sometimes calling it “imperialist” in relation to recent Supreme Court decisions—this work reinterprets the concept through the more subtle mechanisms of procedural intervention. I argue that activism should not be viewed solely through the lens of constitutional interpretation or resistance to precedent. It should also consider judicial actions that reshape procedural norms, such as pleading …

Predictors Of Success In An Online Undergraduate Core Course In Finance Jan 2026

Predictors Of Success In An Online Undergraduate Core Course In Finance

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Because finance is a technically oriented business subject where competence in math and accounting plays a role in student success, we posit that technical knowledge, as proxied by math and accounting pre-tests, may predict success in an online undergraduate finance course. Since little or no lecture support is generally offered while taking an online course, students that struggle with math or accounting may have a greater challenge with the online format for a finance course. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the key determinants of success in an online core course in finance.

Choosing Political Rules Under Rule Utilitarianism: Constitutional Political Economy And The Moral Foundations Of Capitalism Jan 2026

Choosing Political Rules Under Rule Utilitarianism: Constitutional Political Economy And The Moral Foundations Of Capitalism

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Economics is positive analysis. Undergraduates, however, are ultimately interested in economics because it informs normative worldviews. Many undergraduates begin, at least implicitly, with consequentialism (and, more specifically, utilitarianism) as an ethical framework. Principles-level analysis informs what Yeager (2001) refers to as act utilitarianism, but exploring broad political ethical questions with act utilitarianism is problematic. I argue that the alternative rule utilitarianism is preferable and can be informed by a constitutional political economy analysis. I give examples based on Buchanan and Tullock's (1962) framework for considering government decision-making rules.

Metabolic Abnormalities In Association With Clinical Neonatal Seizures In An Indian Tertiary Care Center, Ramesh Bhat. Y., Sandeep Pd

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Background: Metabolic disturbances frequently occur in neonatal seizures either as an underlying cause or as an associated abnormality. A prompt recognition of metabolic abnormalities and early therapy are necessary to avoid poor neurological outcome. Methods: Neonates with clinical seizures were enrolled in the study. Diagnostic evaluation included complete blood count, sepsis screen, and estimation of blood glucose, serum sodium, calcium and magnesium before instituting any specific treatment. Metabolic abnormalities, were considered as isolated when hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), sepsis, intracranial hemorrhage and polycythemia were ruled out. Results: Among 80 newborns with clinical seizures, one metabolic abnormality was detected in 46 (57.5%). …

The Temporal Situation And The Analysis Of Territorial Systems, Said Sghir

Basamat

Time is considered a key factor in the functioning of this universe. It allows for evolution, change, and disappearance. In geography, time is linked to space to guide any analysis that focuses on the question of territories toward a space-time duo whose two components are different from each other but difficult to separate. To dissect this issue, this work will focus on the one hand on the discussion of time as a concept in relation to other notions such as space, geography, and territorial systems. On the other hand, it will draw on investigative and analytical tools capable of further …

A Case Report Of Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome And Literature Review, Xinfeng Gao, Jizhong Wang

Journal of Pediatric Genetics

Shwachman–Diamond syndrome (SDS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, with approximately 90% of cases caused by pathogenic variants in the SBDS gene. This report describes a case of SDS diagnosed during the management of acute appendicitis. The patient, a male aged two years and 11 months, was admitted for emergency surgery for acute appendicitis. Subsequent evaluation revealed pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, pancreatic steatosis, abnormal liver function, and a history of recurrent diarrhea and neutropenia. Next-generation sequencing identified compound heterozygous SBDS variants: NM_016038.2:c.183_184TA>CT (p.Lys62*) and NM_016038.2:c.258+2T>C. This case highlights the importance of considering SDS in children presenting with recurrent …

Techniques For Qr-Enabled Card Capture For Mobile Payments, Dileep R. Dominic

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a method for facilitating secure card-not-present (CNP) mobile payments through the use of a physical payment card embedded with an encrypted QR code. The QR code encodes essential cardholder data, including a primary account number (PAN) and expiry date. The method involves recognizing a designated input field on a mobile device while accessing a payment gateway interface. An interface module displays a camera icon adjacent to the input field, enabling a scanning procedure that utilizes a native camera application to read the QR code. This scanning process automatically populates the input field with the decoded …

A Method And Payment System For Preventing Card Skimming During Payment Transactions, Binayak Biswas

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a method and payment system for preventing card skimming during payment transactions. The method involves generating a dynamic PIN token using a secret key and transaction-specific data. The dynamic PIN token is transmitted via a near-field communication (NFC) interface from a mobile device or contactless card to a point-of-sale (POS) terminal. This token is verified at a verification network utilizing the same secret key and transaction-specific data to confirm the authenticity of the payment transaction. Upon successful verification of the dynamic PIN token, the payment transaction is executed, ensuring that the token is unique for …

Dynamic Distillation Cache For Augmenting A Local Generative Model With Teacher Model Reasoning, Ben Mccormack, Pablo Rodriguez, Karin Breitman, Sol Chea, Orna Berry Keren Jan 2026

Dynamic Distillation Cache For Augmenting A Local Generative Model With Teacher Model Reasoning, Ben Mccormack, Pablo Rodriguez, Karin Breitman, Sol Chea, Orna Berry Keren

Defensive Publications Series

Organizations in regulated or disconnected environments may face challenges in deploying high-performance generative models due to data residency or connectivity constraints, while local models can exhibit a performance gap for certain complex tasks. A hybrid architecture can augment a local student generative model using a dynamic distillation cache. This system can capture outputs, such as final answers, and underlying reasoning patterns from a remote teacher model. When a new query is received, the system can use semantic similarity to retrieve relevant cached reasoning and provide it as context to the local student model. This method of in-context distillation may allow …

Oncofetal Reprogramming: A New Frontier In Cancer Therapy Resistance, Anh Nguyen, Molly Lausten, Bruce M. Boman Jan 2026

Oncofetal Reprogramming: A New Frontier In Cancer Therapy Resistance, Anh Nguyen, Molly Lausten, Bruce M. Boman

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Oncofetal reprogramming has recently emerged as a critical concept in translational cancer research, particularly for its role in driving therapeutic resistance across a variety of malignancies. This biological process refers to a pattern of gene expression that is restricted to embryogenesis, but becomes expressed again in a subpopulation of cancer cells. These genes are typically suppressed after embryogenesis, and their aberrant re-expression in tumors endows cancer cells with stem-like properties and enhanced adaptability. The goal of this review is the following: (i) comprehensively examine the multifaceted nature of oncofetal reprogramming; (ii) elucidate its underlying molecular mechanisms, including its regulators and …

Modes Of Liability For Ai-Enabled Crimes In International Criminal Law, Antonio Coco Jan 2026

Modes Of Liability For Ai-Enabled Crimes In International Criminal Law, Antonio Coco

International Law Studies

As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies become increasingly embedded in human activity, the question of individual accountability for AI-enabled international crimes grows more pressing. This article examines how established doctrines of individual criminal responsibility under international criminal law—particularly the modes of liability recognized in the Statute of the International Criminal Court and in the jurisprudence of international criminal tribunals—may be applied to human actors who interact with AI systems in the commission of core international crimes. Through four hypothetical scenarios, the article explores varying forms of human involvement—from programming to deployment—and assesses whether existing modes of liability, such as perpetration, instigation, …

Matter Of Cruz V. New York City Housing Authority (Nycha) Jan 2026

Matter Of Cruz V. New York City Housing Authority (Nycha)

All Decisions

The Appellate Division reversed a lower court's order, dismissing as time-barred an Article 78 petition challenging the landlord's 2024 denial of the tenant's request for Section 8 subsidy restoration. The court held that the four-month statute of limitations under CPLR 217(1) began in December 2019 when the tenant's Section 8 benefits were initially terminated and the "final and binding" decision was issued. Subsequent administrative requests for restoration or ongoing correspondence with the agency did not constitute a new determination or toll the statute of limitations, rendering the tenant's later petition untimely.

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Osyris L. comprises ecologically and economically important evergreen shrubs or small trees, with particular African species currently threatened by unsustainable exploitation. This study projected potential ecological niche shifts for Osyris under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) using digitized herbarium specimen localities and 20 environmental variables. The genus currently occupies a broad range between 41.32°N–34.85°S latitude and 9.27°W–109.03°E longitude, at elevations from 0 to 3900 m. High-suitability areas cluster primarily in the European-Mediterranean region, eastern/southern Africa, western South America, and Southeast Asia. Projections indicate a significant decline in high-suitability area under all SSP scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, SSP585) compared …
