This work introduces a free-space optical (FSO) communication system engineered to operate effectively under diverse atmospheric conditions, specifically addressing attenuation levels of 20, 30, 40, and 70 dB/km at a stable data rate of 10 Gbps. The proposed architecture utilizes advanced Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulation, combined with a 60 dBm continuous-wave laser, a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and optical amplifiers with 20 dB gain, to ensure signals can be transmitted through challenging atmospheric channels. The model performs quite well, even in diverse conditions, and remains effective when the signal is 70 dB/Km weaker. It has a Q-factor of approximately 10.069 …

The growing world-wide demand of power from renewable sources has brought up considerable attention to HRES system as the strong supplementary or alternative systems for fossil-fuel based energy generation. The efficient deployment of HRESs has to tackle a number of difficult optimization problems that involve the trade-offs between cost, reliability and sustainability. Sophisticated optimization techniques are the key in system design and operation. This paper classifies and assesses the solar, wind, biomass and energy storage based HRES optimization methodologies. It defines significant modeling methodologies and measures, such as Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) and Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). …

The Business Bankruptcy “Big 3” And The Unanticipated Benefits Of Subchapter V, Marshall V. Ringwood

The liberal bankruptcy venue rules in the United States have their defenders and advocates. Subchapter V of the Bankruptcy Code came into effect in 2020, justified as a bipartisan solution to a longstanding problem in corporate bankruptcy where restructuring under Chapter 11 was prohibitively expensive for small-business debtors. On June 21, 2024, Subchapter V’s extended debt limit of $7,500,000 in liabilities reverted back to a statutorily defined $3,024,725. In addition to the justifications offered by organizations such as the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) for both Subchapter V, generally, and a permanent increase to its debt limit, I argue that Subchapter …

What Goals? Which Point? Whose Purpose? A Critical Engagement With Sport Internalism, Francisco Javier Lopez Frias
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
In this article, I critique the dominance of internalism in sport philosophy and outline an alternative theoretical framework that integrates internal and external elements while striving to transcend the dichotomous language used to conceptualize sport. The analysis begins by claiming that internalism conflates three fundamental teleological aspects of sport: goals, point, and purposes. I argue that this conflation limits internalism’s ability to explain the complexity of sporting practices. By carefully distinguishing these elements, I illustrate their distinct roles in shaping sport and explore how they interact. The increasing emphasis on sustainability has intensified tensions with competition law, particularly when cooperative initiatives create risks for market competition or consumer welfare. The main challenge is to identify regulatory strategies that balance sustainability objectives with competitive market principles. This requires a systematic assessment of both sustainability benefits and competition related risks. Existing studies largely rely on legal discussions or case-based evaluations and provide limited quantitative guidance for prioritizing regulatory approaches. This study addresses this gap by proposing a structured decision-making framework to reduce conflicts between sustainability goals and competition law. Netlist reverse engineering enables many applications, including detecting IP theft, verifying CAD tool correctness, and detecting hardware trojans. However, reconstructing high-level information and circuit structure from a flat, nameless netlist is challenging. In this work we focus on the problem of locating known IP cores in an FPGA netlist, which is especially challenging due to the prevalence of highly configurable IP cores. We present Neurocore: a graph neural network-based approach to classifying nodes in a netlist as instances of known IP cores, and present and evaluate different models for different use cases. Cover Crop Functional Groups Controls Decomposition And Nutrient Release In Conservation Tillage-Based Corn Production Systems, Puja Sapkota

Grass-legume cover crop mixtures are promoted to balance ecosystem services, but predicting their decomposition and nutrient release remains a challenge. A two-year litterbag study investigated the decomposition of cereal rye, crimson clover, their field mixture, and a gradient of biomass proportions in a no-till corn system. Monocultures exhibited a strong functional dichotomy where rye decomposed slowly with a large recalcitrant fraction and clover decomposed rapidly. The field mixture yielded high biomass similar to rye and exhibited intermediate decomposition kinetics. Crucially, analysis of non-additive effects revealed a fundamental decoupling as the residue mass loss showed context-dependent synergistic acceleration but nitrogen release …

The recent spillover of highly pathogenic influenza A/H5N1 (HPAI-H5N1) viruses to cattle, other mammals, and humans poses a major risk to animal and human health. Virus adaptation to new species highlights the need for effective vaccines for animals and humans. We recently developed a rabies virus-based H5 vaccine encoding the HPAI-H5 antigen and presenting it on the surface of the rabies virus particle. To test the immunogenicity and efficacy of the vaccine in eliciting systemic and mucosal immune response, we vaccinated mice intramuscularly or intranasally with either live or inactivated and adjuvanted vaccine.
