The Resilience Of Agro-Pastoral Communities In High Altitude Central Tibet: Zooarchaeological And Stable Isotope Investigations At Bangga, 3000–2200 Bp, Zhengwei Zhang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Our understanding of the development of high-altitude adaptations worldwide has been enriched by recent anthropological research. Study of life on the Tibetan Plateau—dubbed “the Roof of the World”—has highlighted specific challenges of seasonal availability of food and extreme weather systems. Recent archaeological studies have revealed that pastoralism has a long history of resilience on the extreme high altitude Tibetan Plateau. However, specific risks to early flocks on the Tibetan Plateau and ways that herders managed their animals to mitigate these have not been well explored. Dated to 3000–2200 Cal BP, the archaeological settlement of Bangga represents one of the earliest …
Low-Temperature Plasticity Of Rock-Forming Minerals, Michael Keith Sly
Low-Temperature Plasticity Of Rock-Forming Minerals, Michael Keith Sly
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The rheology of the Earth’s crust and mantle is in part governed by the physical and mechanical properties of feldspar, quartz, calcite, and olivine. Over the past several decades a significant number of experimental studies have been performed on these minerals. Conventional experiments are generally performed at elevated temperatures because much of the viscoplastic deformation of these minerals is accommodated by high-temperature mechanisms. There is, however, evidence of viscoplastic deformation at lower temperatures (T ≤ 0.3Tm) in the uppermost mantle and throughout the crust. Micromechanical experimental techniques, including nanoindentation and micropillar deformation, can be used to achieve plastic deformation at …
Contribution To Data Science: Time Series, Uncertainty Quantification And Applications, Dhrubajyoti Ghosh
Contribution To Data Science: Time Series, Uncertainty Quantification And Applications, Dhrubajyoti Ghosh
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Time series analysis is an essential tool in modern world statistical analysis, with a myriad of real data problems having temporal components that need to be studied to gain a better understanding of the temporal dependence structure in the data. For example, in the stock market, it is of significant importance to identify the ups and downs of the stock prices, for which time series analysis is crucial. Most of the existing literature on time series deals with linear time series, or with Gaussianity assumption. However, there are multiple instances where the time series shows nonlinear trends, or when the …
Application Of Bismuth Oxychloride As A Colorimetric Uv Sensor Material, Kyle James Troche
Application Of Bismuth Oxychloride As A Colorimetric Uv Sensor Material, Kyle James Troche
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Sunlight contains about 9% UV radiation with roughly one-third of it penetrating the atmosphere and reaching the Earth’s surface. UV radiation from the sun is classified into three different types: UVA (315- 499 nm), UVB (280- 314nm), and UVC (100- 279 nm). Prolonged exposure to artificial UV radiation or direct sunlight can still induce many adverse effects such as sunburn, weakening of the immune system, and skin cancer. A wide variety of photoresistor, photodiode and colorimetric UV sensors are currently being researched to help monitor UV radiation. Our research is focused on developing a colorimetric UV sensor that is inherently …
Constructing Roles And Discourse: Presidential Speech And European Union Accession In The Former Yugoslavia, 2000-2021, John Horner
Dissertations
Yugoslavia’s dissolution in the 1990s resulted in seven distinct nation-states vying for functional institutions, ethno-nationalistic coalescence, and external validation. To this end the European Union (EU) offered a pathway to nation-state building and membership via democratization, economic liberalization, and legal and civil improvements. However, to date only Slovenia (2004) and Croatia (2013) are EU member-states. Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia are candidate countries. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidates. What are the incentives for Western Balkan countries to reform and join the EU? Were motivations driven by rational, economic benefits of membership, or was the impetus identity-oriented to …
Assembly Of The Peripheral Arm Subunits Of Escherichia Coli Complex I And Analysis Of Clinical Mutations, Hind Alkhaldi
Assembly Of The Peripheral Arm Subunits Of Escherichia Coli Complex I And Analysis Of Clinical Mutations, Hind Alkhaldi
Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Respiratory Complex I from E. coli is a proto-type of the mitochondrial enzyme, consisting of a 6-subunit peripheral arm (B-CD-E-F-G-I) and a 7-subunit membrane arm. When subunits E-F-G (N-module), were expressed alone they formed an active complex as determined by co-immunoprecipitation and native gel electrophoresis. When co-expressed with subunits B and CD, only a complex of E-F-G was found. When these five subunits were co-expressed with subunit I and two membrane subunits, A and H, a complex of B-CD-E-F-G-I was membrane-bound, constituting the N- and Q-modules. Assembly of Complex I was also followed by splitting the genes between two plasmids, …
Activation Of P53-Regulated Pro-Survival Signals And Hypoxia-Independent Mitochondrial Targeting Of Tigar By E6 Oncoproteins Of High-Risk Hpvs, Lacin Yapindi
Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The high-risk human papillomaviruses are small, non-enveloped double-stranded DNA viruses that infect the basal epithelial keratinocytes. The majority of HPV infections are self-limiting and asymptomatic; however, in 2-4% of all infected individuals, persistent infections with high-risk HPVs lead to malignancies, including head-and-neck cancers and anogenital carcinomas, particularly cervical cancers. The HPV life cycle is strongly tied to the normal differentiation process of the epithelial tissue. Upon cell entry, the viral genome is maintained as episomal DNA within the nuclei of HPV-infected basal keratinocytes and amplified to a low copy number as the cells divide. As a part of the self-renewing …

Steps Toward The Total Synthesis Of The Chrysosporazine Family, Katie Kaczynski
Steps Toward The Total Synthesis Of The Chrysosporazine Family, Katie Kaczynski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with 19.3 million new cancer cases and 10 million deaths in 2020 alone. In the United States, cancer was the second leading cause of death after heart disease. One of the reasons that cancer is so frequently terminal is that cancerous cells frequently develop multidrug resistance (MDR) to frontline chemotherapeutical treatments, resulting in cancers cannot be treated and are inevitably fatal. This makes the discovery of ways to combat MDR so important in the treatment of cancer. The chrysosporazines are a family of recently discovered (2019) natural products that have …

The Pagoda Of The Gods: A Case For Indigenous Karen Sacred Sites As Special Cultural Zones Along Thailand’S Borders, Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan, Lilly Zeitler, Benjamin Fairfield
Forest and Society
Burgeoning recognition of Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge and livelihood practices have led to ‘Special Cultural Zone’ designations for some traditionally Indigenous lands in Thailand. Simultaneously, the Thai government has designated 10 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to bolster trade and investments along its borders without acknowledging the pre-existence of Indigenous peoples. SEZs intersect with sites of notable cultural significance, such as Kho Pho Lu (Pagoda of the Gods), a sacred site for Indigenous Karen near Mae Sot in Tak province. Detailed ethnographic and interview findings show the resilience of these sacred sites and embedded ritualistic place-making practices that persist despite a …

Forest and Society
The study took place in southern Thailand, in Phatthalung province, and is part of “Heveadapt,” a Franco-Thai research project. The aim of this project was to show how smallholder rubber plantations can adapt and remain sustainable in the face of variable climatic conditions and deep changes in socio-economic context. Among the various types of cropping systems, agroforestry practices were identified as promising. Rubber agroforestry systems (AFS) are economically more productive than rubber monocrop plantations and give more flexibility to smallholders, in particular when rubber prices are low, which has been the case since 2013. However, adoption of AFS during the …

The Catholic Paradox Of Villette, Kevin R. Bie
The Catholic Paradox Of Villette, Kevin R. Bie
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Villette, published in 1853, was Charlotte Brontë’s last novel. Brontë explores both narrative and religious complexities through her narrator, Lucy Snowe. Orphaned Lucy Snowe embarks on a new life in a predominantly Catholic country where her Protestant identity is challenged. Catholicism is presented as a temptation for Lucy. Brontë reveals Lucy’s story through her notable fictional autobiography structure, but Lucy Snowe complicates the relationship between narrator and reader. Lucy explicitly capitalizes on the structure of fictional autobiography, critiquing her narration and fostering a personal relationship with the reader.
This thesis analyzes the Catholic paradox in Charlotte Brontë’s Villette by …
From Patrons To Landlords: The Transformation Of Class Relations In Zanzibar Through Wakf Reform, Isabel Spafford
From Patrons To Landlords: The Transformation Of Class Relations In Zanzibar Through Wakf Reform, Isabel Spafford
Honors Theses
This study examines the role of wakf reforms in reshaping class relationships in Zanzibar during the British protectorate. Prior to the establishment of the British protectorate in Zanzibar, wakf dedications maintained patron-client relationships between the landowning class and poor clients that were established during the time of slavery but continued after abolition. I argue that wakf dedications were essential to continuing these relationships, and therefore British wakf reforms were necessary to achieve British colonial goals of dissolving patron-client relationships and establishing a capitalist system based on wage labor and ground rent. I analyze the relationship of the British colonial class, …
One-Step Synthesis Of Corn Oil-Based Polyol For Highly Flame-Retardant Rigid Polyurethane Foams, Tenzin Ingsel
One-Step Synthesis Of Corn Oil-Based Polyol For Highly Flame-Retardant Rigid Polyurethane Foams, Tenzin Ingsel
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF), heavily utilized in construction, refrigeration, and the automotive industries, are a significant class of polyurethanes. They can substantially enhance energy efficiency by improving thermal insulation. However, the application of petrochemical sources in polyurethane has raised environmental concerns.
Such concerns call for the development and application of new bio-based polyurethanes to potentially reduce humanity's over-reliance on nonrenewable sources.
In this work, corn oil-based polyol was synthesized via popularized thiol-ene reaction. The obtained polyol was characterized by wet chemistry methods, spectroscopic evaluations, and chromatography. Non-halogenated flame retardants of cost-effective and environmentally friendly nature were incorporated into the polyurethane …
An Interdisciplinary Approach To Understanding Volcanoes And Their Processes, Katherine Cosburn
An Interdisciplinary Approach To Understanding Volcanoes And Their Processes, Katherine Cosburn
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
To better understand volcanoes and their processes is important from both a fundamental science perspective and for hazard monitoring purposes. The complexity and limitations we face in pursuing such a science are numerous and this dissertation explores how an interdisciplinary approach combining physics, computer science, and volcanology can address this complexity in a straightforward and meaningful way. This is achieved through various modelling techniques across three studies: (1) a first-order analytic modelling of stratovolcano topographic shape, (2) the use of a Bayesian joint inversion on gravity and novel cosmic-ray muon measurements for imaging flat-lying subsurface density anomalies, and (3) the …
Nonequilibrium And Nonlinear Dynamics In Collective Spin Models And Implementations Using Quantum Feedback Control, Manuel H. Munoz Arias
Nonequilibrium And Nonlinear Dynamics In Collective Spin Models And Implementations Using Quantum Feedback Control, Manuel H. Munoz Arias
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Out-of-equilibrium dynamics generalizes the study of ground states of quantum Hamiltonians at zero temperature, to that of dynamical quasi-steady states of quantum systems far from equilibrium. In this dissertation I discuss dynamical quantum phase transitions and out-of-equilibrium phases of matter in models of collective spins with multi-body interactions. These models, based on collective degrees of freedom, allow an exact description of the thermodynamic limit via the mean-field description. In this limit, the nonequilibrium dynamics of properties of quantum states is mapped to the nonlinear dynamics of classical variables, and thus it can be analyzed using tools from the theory of …

“For All You Know, I Might Be A Black Panther”: How The News Media Cultivated White Anxiety In The United States And Became A Modern Panopticon For Black Power, Caitlin Grace Leishman
History ETDs
Building upon French philosopher Michel Foucault’s analysis of Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, I argue that throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, the news media and resulting culture nurtured and reinforced the postcolonial narratives that associated Blackness with criminality. I analyze the national newspaper coverage for their narrative portrayal of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP). The national media and U.S. government targeted the BPP and Black Power politics to discredit them and the overall movement for Black Liberation. I argue that this media-state project only intensified during the 1970s and into the 1980s with the country’s turn to …

Review Of Orthochiroides Kovařík, 1998 With Description Of A New Species (Scorpiones: Buthidae), František Kovařík, Graeme Lowe
Euscorpius
The genus Orthochiroides Kovařík, 1998 is reanalyzed. Revised diagnoses and new illustrations for the genus and all four of its species are presented. A new species, O. somalilandus sp. n. from Somaliland is described and illustrated. Phylogenetic relationships of the genus with several other similar genera of small buthids are inferred from a parsimony analysis of 43 discrete morphological characters. The recent synonymy of Orthochiroides with Orthochirus is refuted and the genus is revalidated.
