Simulated Hearing Loss In Healthy Young And Older Adults Results In Poor Reaction Time In Older Adults., Victoria Kowalewski, Nicoleta Bugnariu, Rita M. Patterson, Jessica Hartos

Emerging evidence links hearing loss to increased fall risk in older adults, yet mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the impact of simulated hearing loss on reactive balance control in healthy young and older adults. Participants performed dual-task scenario involving auditory sentence repetition and unexpected surface translations. Hearing loss was simulated using Adobe Audition, applying frequency-specific attenuation based on moderate sensorineural hearing loss levels from the literature.

Speech-in-noise performance significantly declined under simulated hearing loss for both age groups (p < .001), confirming effective simulation, but not significant differences were found between age groups. Maximum COP-COM displacement (the scalar distance between Center of Pressure and Center of Mass) increased with perturbation intensity (Level 1 vs. Level 2: p < .001), but no significant differences were found between hearing conditions or age groups (p > .05), suggesting compensatory step execution was preserved.

Facial Recognition Technology, for example, has been used by police to identify suspects in investigations since 2001. Recently, in League of Women Voters of Kansas v. Schwab (League II), the Kansas supreme court addressed the constitutionality of a Kansas statute that purported to combat election fraud. In League II, the court invalidated a provision criminalizing conduct that leads others falsely to believe the actor is an election official, rejected some challenges to a signature verification requirement but remanded for further consideration of others, and upheld a provision limiting the number of ballots that a single person could submit on behalf of others during an election. This Essay proposes a novel approach to the most urgent food safety problem currently facing U.S. consumers: fresh produce contaminated with virulent microbial pathogens. Despite extensive regulation, growers have been unable to rid their fields of toxic bacteria, and processors have been unsuccessful in sanitizing tainted produce before it reaches store shelves. As a result, tainted produce sickens millions of consumers every year. An emerging consensus is calling for new efforts to address one source of the problem. This Article addresses two related issues in the federal habeas of state convictions. First, it analyzes a circuit split that recently emerged over whether a state’s appeal would be moot after a federal district court grants habeas and a state vacates its own judgment. One view is that the state vacatur would render the appeal moot because the prisoner is no longer in custody. A second view is that the appeal would not necessarily be moot because a partial remedy could be available. This essay is an attempt to name and define a certain kind of civil rights problem. Namely: Rights violations that are small enough that the rational thing for the victim to do might be to just cope with them, but when allowed to fester and repeat, do significant damage. We call these problems microviolations. To define them, we borrow from the idea of a microaggression, a concept that developed to understand an analogous challenge in workplace and school discrimination. South Carolina is ranked 24th in the nation for the number of charter schools in the state, with most of these schools opening in the last 10 years. This manuscript analyzes 7 common educational initiatives among SC charter schools: (a) small class size, (b) strong focus on technology, (c) advocating education of the whole child/ arts education, (d) required community service, (e) required parental involvement, (f) uniforms or uniformed dress, and (g) inquiry/project based curriculum. Description and analysis of each component is provided along with specific notes from schools which incorporate it.

During 2005-2006, the Richard Riley Institute of Government, Politics, and Public Leadership at Furman University conducted focus-group interviews of parents, students, teachers, business leaders, school officials, and district administrators to collect data concerning the state of public education in South Carolina. Analysis of the results suggests that the state’s teacher preparation programs should continue and/or enhance their efforts in the areas of early childhood education, one-on-one tutoring techniques, adult/parent education, reading pedagogies, dropout prevention strategies, and curricular alignment/articulation.

Smallholder farmers in rural Tanzania depend mainly on rain-fed agriculture, which makes them vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This paper is based on a study conducted in Burunga and Musati villages in Serengeti District, Tanzania. The study employed a mixed methods approach; combining qualitative and quantitative methods. It involved 154 participants and employed household surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions as data collection methods. The findings suggest that smallholder farmers in the study area are aware of climate change and do, indeed, develop, adopt, and use locally-based innovation systems that avert or minimise its impacts. This work presents SENTISEC, a hybrid LLM-based threat detection framework designed to classify security logs by integrating keyword heuristics, domain-adapted sentiment scoring, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). The system achieves an overall accuracy of 93.67%, with 91.46% macro recall, 89.07% macro F1, and 95.15% threat recall, while maintaining a low false-positive rate of 1.68%. Its methodology incorporates strict keyword and IOC matching, a domain-tuned DistilBERT sentiment module, hybrid BM25–MiniLM retrieval enhanced with BGE reranking, adaptive quantile-based threshold calibration, and SHAP-based explainability. Genomic data sharing has become an essential component of biomedical research, enabling large-scale collaborations and accelerating discoveries in human genetics. To balance the need for accessibility with privacy concerns, several controlled-access mechanisms have been proposed, including genomic beacons. Genomic beacons answer simple presence/absence queries about specific genetic variants. However, prior work has demonstrated that beacons remain vulnerable to genome reconstruction attacks, where an adversary can recover large portions of participants’ genomes using summary statistics. Open data and code are crucial to increasing transparency and reproducibility, and in building trust in scientific research. However, despite an increasing number of journals in ecology and evolutionary biology mandating for data and code to be archived alongside published articles, the amount and quality of archived data and code, and subsequent reproducibility of results, has remained worryingly low.
