Improving Burnout And Stress Among Advanced Practice Nurses Using Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Techniques, Nancy Bennett, Jennifer Boose Apr 2023

Improving Burnout And Stress Among Advanced Practice Nurses Using Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Techniques, Nancy Bennett, Jennifer Boose

Doctoral Projects

Stress and burnout in the nursing profession have negative effects on the nurses' personal and professional lives, as well as those whom they are responsible for providing care. The incidence of stress among advanced practice nurses can result in outcomes such as burnout, turnover intention, lower job satisfaction, and adverse clinical care.

Nursing burnout and stress are public health issues because of the consequences of these two factors, which include diminished provider focus and negative patient outcomes. Against such a background, the doctoral aimed at using mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention to reduce burnout and stress and examine the efficacy …

Preferences Of Adults With Turner Syndrome Regarding Disclosure Of Potential Neurodevelopmental And Psychiatric Features, Elizabeth Pancake Apr 2023

Preferences Of Adults With Turner Syndrome Regarding Disclosure Of Potential Neurodevelopmental And Psychiatric Features, Elizabeth Pancake

Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to assess preferences of adults with Turner Syndrome (TS) regarding provider disclosure and discussion of potential neurodevelopmental or psychiatric features.

Fifty-six individuals with TS completed an online survey. Questions were asked about their TS diagnosis and provider involvement, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric diagnoses, and preferences concerning providers’ disclosure regarding these possible non-physical features.

Sixteen individuals reported a formal neurodevelopmental diagnosis. Furthermore, 46 respondents reported personal suspicion of ADHD, math difficulties, weaker non-verbal or visual-spatial skills, intellectual disability, or autism spectrum disorder. Thirty-five individuals had a formal diagnosis of at least one psychiatric condition. The preferred providers to initiate …

The Relationship Between The Dark Triad Traits, Aggression, And Malevolent Creativity In Males And Females, Payge Japp Apr 2023

The Relationship Between The Dark Triad Traits, Aggression, And Malevolent Creativity In Males And Females, Payge Japp

Psychology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Creativity, or the generation of novel and appropriate ideas (Plucker et al., 2004), is often seen as being highly valuable and socially desirable (Nakano et al., 2018). Although creativity is commonly perceived as a benevolent, pro-social construct (Bilton & Cummings, 2014), creativity can also have negative consequences. Malevolent creativity is commonly defined as creativity that is deliberately intended to harm others, oneself, objects, or processes (Cropley et al., 2014). Research has examined how various individual difference variables, such as gender and the Dark Triad traits, predict malevolent creativity. While these individual relationships have been closely examined, research exploring the relationships …

Othering The Brother: Toward A Sibling-Oriented Ethics Of Care, William Bryant Apr 2023

Othering The Brother: Toward A Sibling-Oriented Ethics Of Care, William Bryant

Honors Theses

This project is an examination of issues of childcare, gendered responsibilities, and family identity informed by feminist and queer theory. As the second oldest in a family of eight, I have always understood myself primarily as a big brother. Rooted in this experience, this project is an exploration of feminist care ethics as they pertain to existing family structures. I review and build upon feminist conversations surrounding the family, especially concerning motherhood. Then, working with more recent queer and trans discourse, I explore how different familial care practices have been limited, reconfigured, or erased under dominant cis-heteronormative notions of care. …

A Comparative Case Against Criminalizing Ip Infringements In The Uk And China, Dennis J. Baker, Xiaoxiao Wang Apr 2023

A Comparative Case Against Criminalizing Ip Infringements In The Uk And China, Dennis J. Baker, Xiaoxiao Wang

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

In this Article, it is argued comparatively that across the world intellectual property rights have been expanded to the point of absurdity. Beyond lengthy monopoly protections being backed up with prison sentences of up to ten years in both China and the UK, these monopolies have been extended in the UK to cover vague concepts such as publicity rights and performance rights. It is argued that due to the incredible lobbying power of Western multinational corporations, China was railroaded into enacting Western-style offenses in order to join the WTO. It is submitted that numerous economic studies have shown that intellectual …

A Systematic Review Of Research On Race In Rural Educational Scholarship Since 2001, Timberly L. Baker, Joy Howard, Amy Swain Apr 2023

A Systematic Review Of Research On Race In Rural Educational Scholarship Since 2001, Timberly L. Baker, Joy Howard, Amy Swain

The Rural Educator

This systematic review of literature on race in rural educational scholarship addresses the research question: 1) How are race and racism typically represented (defined, discussed) in rural education literature? a) What factors have been explored at length in regard to race and racism? b)Where are the predominant gaps in the research literature? In answering these questions we reviewed literature published in three rural education journals from 2001-2022 and used a systematic approach to the data collection, extraction, and analysis. The overall findings about race yielded four themes: Race as– descriptor, located within a racial hierarchy, socially constructed, and an element …

Student Experience And Learning In A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience, Allison Witucki Apr 2023

Student Experience And Learning In A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience, Allison Witucki

Dissertations

Scientific research is advocated as an important experience for undergraduate STEM majors. Involving undergraduates in research early on in their educational careers can potentially prevent attrition and encourages students to pursue post-graduate education and careers within the field. However, research opportunities for undergraduates can be difficult to obtain. Many students may not realize that research opportunities exist, or there is limited availability for undergraduates to work in a faculty member’s research laboratory. Luckily, an educational model for involving scientific research in a course, also known as a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE), can provide more widespread opportunities for students to …

Tracing The History Of Discourses On Professionalism In The “Sister Professions” Of Librarianship And Social Work In The United States, Rachel E. Trnka Apr 2023

Tracing The History Of Discourses On Professionalism In The “Sister Professions” Of Librarianship And Social Work In The United States, Rachel E. Trnka

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In Whole Person Librarianship: A Social Work Approach to Patron Services (2019), Zettervall and Nienow aptly refer to librarianship and social work as ‘sister professions’, highlighting their gendered histories and similar professional values. Both librarianship and social work emerged as service-oriented, female-dominated professions in the late nineteenth century. Questions about professional identity have concerned librarians and social workers since those early days, with scholars and practitioners in both fields examining markers of professionalism, such as training, associations, and values. This article compares the historical development of professional social work and librarianship by tracing the changing discourses on professionalism, attending to …

Evaluating The Impact Of Personalized Professional Learning On Technology Integration In The Classroom, Angela Bishop Burgess Apr 2023

Evaluating The Impact Of Personalized Professional Learning On Technology Integration In The Classroom, Angela Bishop Burgess

Theses and Dissertations

Classroom access to technology such as a computer or the Internet does not guarantee a high-level of integration of technology by the teacher or application by the student. Tools that could be used to increase student creation or personalized learning opportunities may instead be used by the teacher at lower levels of use that replace non-technological tools. The purpose of this action research was to implement and evaluate the impact of technology-focused personalized professional learning on participants’ use of and attitudes towards classroom technology. It attempted to show that modeling technology integration in professional learning opportunities for educators could have …

Care For The Land: Restoration As Interspecies Care Labor And Emergent Activism At The Hawaiian Fishpond-Scape, Cynthia Ruimin Shi , '23

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

In the last two decades, environmental NGOs on the islands of Hawai’I have been leading efforts to restore traditional land practices and foodways, among them fishpond, or loko i’a, which are traditional aquaculture infrastructures that ensure a stable production of fish protein. This ethnographic study of loko i’a restoration projects is informed by four months of fieldwork grounded in participant observation at Paepae O He’eia, a non-profit organization on the windward side of O’ahu heading the restorative effort at He’eia fishpond.

My thesis addresses the ethics of care, labor, and Indigenous worldmaking emerging from ecological and cultural restoration of fishponds …

Brazilian Camming: The Monetization Of Intimacy In Online Sex Work, Fernanda Veiverberg Apr 2023

Brazilian Camming: The Monetization Of Intimacy In Online Sex Work, Fernanda Veiverberg

Master's Theses

This thesis addresses a form of online feminized labor in Brazil, which employs digital technology to relieve the urges for intimacy and monetary insecurity. Camming is a genre of online sex work, in which cam models sell their body image and attention online through computer-mediated interactions. It constitutes a profitable activity that employs body performance without physical contact between model and client, typical in most categories of sex work such as prostitution, and where the clients are not mere spectators as within the pornography industry because camming requires authenticity and communication. For that, I explored three conceptual spheres that combined …

Shooting To Minimize Gender Discrimination As An Unintended Consequence Of Title Ix, Alexa Potts Apr 2023

Shooting To Minimize Gender Discrimination As An Unintended Consequence Of Title Ix, Alexa Potts

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Title IX is a federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity that receives federal funding. Congress initially passed Title IX out of concern for sexbased equality in academia. However, Title IX has had significant impacts on athletics, resulting in increased athletic opportunities for females. To be Title IX compliant, institutions must provide equality in athletic participation for both sexes. The Office of Civil Rights provided a three-part test to measure equality in athletic participation. Institutions must satisfy at least one of the three prongs to meet Title IX requirements as they pertain to equality in athletic …

Federal Bureaucratic Studies, Jesse M. Cross Apr 2023

Federal Bureaucratic Studies, Jesse M. Cross

Washington and Lee Law Review

A vast literature has developed in legal scholarship on the topic of bureaucratic governance. To date, this literature has focused squarely on the executive branch. Yet a second bureaucracy also exists in the federal government: the congressional bureaucracy. Recent legislation scholarship has brought this bureaucracy into focus—documenting its traits, practices, and culture. In so doing, it has created a rich new opportunity for cross-disciplinary dialogue—one where executive-branch studies and legislative studies collaborate toward a larger understanding of how bureaucracy operates, and can operate, in a presidentialist system.

To begin that cross-disciplinary conversation, this Article turns to five themes in the …

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

ABSTRACT OF PROJECT

Nurturing Creativity Using Intentional Event Design

The purpose of this project is to continue the research and strengthen the academic foundation that underlies the intersection where creativity and creative leadership are supported by intentional event design. This project will explore the tools that can help determine if an organization encourages bold creativity or limits the time or energy allowed for creative problem solving, and the many ways we can design experiences with the intention to allow creativity to enter the room. This will extend the practical applications and explore stories where leadership, creativity and experience design intersect …

Defending The First Premise: Why Prenatal Life Is Not The Exception, Jessica Buchanan Apr 2023

Defending The First Premise: Why Prenatal Life Is Not The Exception, Jessica Buchanan

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis frames the abortion debate by dividing the pro-life position into two premises: that the government must protect human beings’ right to life, and that an unborn human organism is a human being. It briefly describes the proposition that the unborn are moral persons. It then proceeds to examine philosophical, legal, and practical objections to the first premise, concluding that if the unborn are established as human beings, the government must uphold their right to life. While this thesis is intended to argue in favor of restricting elective abortion, it does not put forth an opinion on what should …

Continuous Casting Of Microencapsulated Alloys As Phase Change Materials, Yuri A. Gulak Apr 2023

Continuous Casting Of Microencapsulated Alloys As Phase Change Materials, Yuri A. Gulak

Master’s Theses - College of Engineering

The overarching goal of this work is to provide a potential solution to the growing needs for largescale thermal energy storage via the development of a highly scalable manufacturing process, namely continuous casting, toward industrial scale production of high temperature microencapsulated phase change materials. Using borosilicate glass coated tin metal as a model system, we designed, built, and validated two continuous casting machines with high-throughput in-line data-acquisition. The first machine enabled continuous casting of glass coated metal microwires. And the second machine subsequently uses the glass-coated metal microwire as feedstock to produce glass coated metal particles. Analytical, numerical, and experimental …
