In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, Sri Lanka underwent a nationwide lockdown that limited motor vehicle movement, industrial operations, and human activities. This study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and particulate matter (PM₁₀, PM_2.5) concentrations in two urban cities (Colombo and Kandy) in Sri Lanka, by comparison of data from the lockdown period (March to May 2020) with its analogous period of 2019 and 2021. In November 2022, Missouri residents voted to ratify Amendment 3 to the state constitution and make the recreational use of marijuana legal. Yet, Missouri is one of only a few states that does not have protections for private employment drug testing. In this article, Paige Hume discusses the landscape of employment drug testing in Missouri, as well as the impact of the new amendment on workers.

The extraordinary breath-hold diving capacity of crocodilians has been ascribed to a unique mode of allosterically regulating hemoglobin (Hb)-oxygenation in circulating red blood cells. We investigated the origin and mechanistic basis of this novel biochemical phenomenon by performing directed mutagenesis experiments on resurrected ancestral Hbs. Comparisons of Hb function between the common ancestor of archosaurs (the group that includes crocodilians and birds) and the last common ancestor of modern crocodilians revealed that regulation of Hb-O₂ affinity via allosteric binding of bicarbonate ions represents a croc-specific innovation that evolved in combination with the loss of allosteric regulation by ATP binding. …

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a severe infection responsible for upper gastrointestinal symptoms (UGISs). Several causes of H. pylori infection include food ingestion and person-to-person transmission. Many lifestyle variables can affect the occurrence of UGISs such as coffee consumption and smoking.

Objective: To assess the association between smoking and coffee consumption and the occurrence of UGISs in patients with active H. pylori infection in Jazan city in Saudi Arabia.

Glacier Northwest’s unionized ready-mix concrete truck drivers went on strike after the parties had reached an impasse and their collective bargaining agreement had expired. Several strikers returned their trucks fully loaded, rendering the concrete useless, although the trucks were not damaged. This case presents a question whether the drivers’ strike, which is regulated by federal law, subjects their union to a state law tort claim for damage to the concrete.

This qualitative study examines pediatric oncologists’ experiences with treatment refusal and abandonment among children with cancer in the United States. Interviews with 30 pediatric oncologists explored the frequency, types, and ethical complexities of cases in which families declined or discontinued recommended curative treatments. Participants described a wide range of scenarios including outright refusal, delayed initiation of therapy, partial acceptance of treatment, and pursuit of alternative therapies. The findings reveal that such cases often involve complex psychosocial, cultural, and informational factors, and frequently evolve through multiple stages of conflict or negotiation. For the individual with sickle cell disease (SCD), the lifespan is increasing but adults report decreased quality of life (QOL), low self-efficacy, and ineffective coping skills. The care of adult patients with SCD requires a complex multidisciplinary team approach with focus not only on physiological, psychological, and social needs, but also on spiritual needs. Quality of life, spirituality, and self-efficacy have been sparsely and separately studied in individuals with SCD. These three constructs have never been combined in one study in the adult SCD population.

Individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia face a myriad of obstacles to wellness, beginning with diagnostic discrepancies including over- and misdiagnoses on the schizophrenia spectrum. People with schizophrenia experience profound amounts of stigmatization from the general population, their healthcare providers, and even themselves. Such stigmatization creates a barrier for wellness, poorer prognoses, and often limits adherence to physical and mental healthcare. Moreover, it can exacerbate the already stifling symptomatology of their diagnoses, including specific bodily-related symptomatology. Background: Viral suppression is the ultimate goal of the HIV treatment cascade and a primary endpoint of antiretroviral therapy. Empirical evidence found racial/ethnic disparities in viral suppression among people living with HIV (PWH), but the evidence of the relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and place-based viral suppression is scarce. Further exploring potential structural moderators in this relationship has substantial implications for healthcare policymaking and resource allocation. Indonesia is home to many indigenous peoples who can preserve the environment through their traditions amid the increasing of external values ​​and lifestyles’ penetration. The following presents the indigenous ecological knowledge of the Serawai people in the form of the celako kemali. Based on insights from the Indigenous research methods, this study aims first to assess the persistence of the celako kemali as a method for farming practices. Diarrhea is the second leading cause of children’s death under five years of age worldwide. The most common microbiological causes of gastroenteritis vary by age group, geographic region, and type of diarrhea. This study designed to identify the bacterial causes of children’s diarrhea under two years of age in Samawah /Al-Muthanna Governorate. Out of 84 patients, 21 sterile stool swabs were collected from children suffering from diarrhea in the Maternity and Children Hospital in Samawah for the period from 1 to 31 December 2021. Multiple Myeloma (MM) is characterized by monoclonal immunoglobulin production leading to widespread skeletal destruction and renal dysfunction. Light chain multiple myeloma (LCMM) affects 15% of individuals with MM and has an overall poor prognosis. Cutaneous manifestations are uncommon and it is rarely complicated by Type I Cryoglobulinemia (CG). Here we present an atypical case of κ-predominant LCMM complicated by Type I CG in an 80-year-old man who presented with a progressive non-blanching necrotic rash and ulcers involving his face, distal extremities, and oropharynx of two months duration prior to his admission at our facility. Adrenal insufficiency can be a primary or secondary disorder occurring from a hormone deficiency or suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis from various etiologies. The diagnosis can be challenging given the lack of specificity and indolence of symptoms. Diarrhea is not a typical presenting symptom of adrenal insufficiency and can be overlooked as an infectious disease during an adrenal crisis. Herein we present a patient with an undiagnosed adrenal insufficiency who presented with subacute diarrhea during an adrenal crisis after a dental procedure and esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Despite widespread anecdotal accounts of coaches’ emotional abuse in intercollegiate sports, empirical literature is lacking. To address this gap, the present exploratory study was designed to explore how former intercollegiate student-athletes interpreted experiences of emotionally abusive coaching. Former female NCAA and NJCAA student-athletes (N = 14; M_age = 25.3 years) took part in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Data were interpreted using a constructivist grounded theory approach.
