Weedy rice, or red rice, is an agricultural weed that has evolved independently in different parts of the world from cultivated rice. Significant crop damage has resulted from weed infestations, leading to a loss of income for farmers and a severe reduction in crop yield. Seed shattering is one of the most distinctive and problematic characteristics of weedy rice, as it allows seeds to disperse and persist in soil for long periods and limit the effectiveness of current weed control efforts. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are waves that remain in the continuous spectrum of radiating waves that carry energy, however, still localized within the spectrum. BICs, also embedded eigenmodes, exhibit high quality factors that have been observed in optical and acoustic waveguides, photonic structures, and other material systems. Presently, there are limited means to select these BICs in terms of the quality factor and their excitation. In this work, we show that a different type of BIC, Quasi-BICs (Q-BICs), in open resonators can have their quality attuned by introducing embedded scatters. Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models of breast cancer are an effective discovery platform and tool for preclinical pharmacologic testing and biomarker identification. We established orthotopic PDX models of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) from the primary breast tumors of patients prior to and following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) while they were enrolled in the ARTEMIS trial (NCT02276443). Serial biopsies were obtained from patients prior to treatment (pre-NACT), from poorly responsive disease after four cycles of Adriamycin and cyclophosphamide (AC, mid-NACT), and in cases of AC-resistance, after a 3-month course of different experimental therapies and/or additional chemotherapy (post-NACT). New therapeutics that combine efficacy with limited side effects and can be delivered noninvasively are needed to adequately treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune diseases. Kv1.3 channel-expressing CCR7− effector memory T (TEM) lymphocytes are significant players in the pathogenesis of multiple autoimmune diseases, and blocking Kv1.3 reduces disease severity in rat models of RA and patients with plaque psoriasis. However, peptide therapeutics require repeated injections, reducing patient compliance. We used a bioengineered Lactobacillus reuteri as an oral delivery method of a Kv1.3 blocker for immunomodulation in rat models of atopic dermatitis and RA. This study demonstrates a …

Many epithelial compartments undergo constitutive renewal in homeostasis but activate unique regenerative responses following injury. The clear corneal epithelium is crucial for vision and is renewed from limbal stem cells (LSCs). Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we profiled the mouse corneal epithelium in homeostasis, aging, diabetes, and dry eye disease (DED), where tear deficiency predisposes the cornea to recurrent injury. In homeostasis, we capture the transcriptional states that accomplish continuous tissue turnover. We leverage our dataset to identify candidate genes and gene networks that characterize key stages across homeostatic renewal, including markers for LSCs. In aging and diabetes, there were only …

The Indispensability Of Back Translation: Mediating Faithfulness And Naturalness In The Translation Of The Bible Into An Unfamiliar Tongue, Rhoneil M. Arevalo

This paper examines the tension between faithfulness and naturalness in translating the Bible into the mother tongues of diverse peoples. While both are essential, they often conflict in practice. Faithfulness requires accurately conveying the original author’s intent, whereas naturalness demands that the message be expressed clearly and idiomatically in the receptor language. This tension is reflected in the differing roles of translation officers and local translators: officers prioritize fidelity to the source text, while translators ensure linguistic and cultural appropriateness. The present disclosure provides a method and container management system for building container cluster. The container management system based on user requirement may automate hardening of operating system and configure network and storage for adding new container. The container management system obtains and configures load balancer VIP without any manual intervention. Thereafter, the container management system performs end-to-end validation by deploying test application and validating the test application. Thus, the present disclosure reduces time consumption for building container clusters based on the user requirement.

"Either On Account Of Sex Or Color": Policing The Boundaries Of The Medical Profession During Reconstruction, Adam Lloyd-Jones

In 1868, the American Medical Association (AMA) was asked to permit consultation with female physicians and admit them as delegates. In 1870, a delegation of Black doctors sought entrance to an Annual AMA meeting. The AMA refused entrance to both female and Black physicians. This paper argues that these meetings, and the question of inclusion for Black and female practitioners, arose out of the political climate that Reconstruction created. Expanding from previous scholarship, this paper further analyzes the role of Chicago doctor Nathan Smith Davis in the perpetuation of a white medical profession.

Evo Morales, an Aymara man, was the first Indigenous President of Bolivia, a majority-Indigenous country, from 2005-2019. He and his political party, Movimento al Socialismo (MAS), promised to center Indigenous concerns in Bolivia’s foreign policy by championing pro-environmental policies, nationalizing natural resources, and breaking ties with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank. This essay examines the role of socialism and indigeneity in Morales’ foreign policy using his speeches at international venues such as the United Nations, tweets (@evoespueblo), op-eds in American news outlets, and interviews. The decline of the Liberal Party following their 1906 triumph has prompted countless historical analyses. Despite their significant majorities, popular agenda, and divided opposition, the Liberal Party was unable to convert its support into political success. This paper suggests, through an analysis of the papers and writings of Lord Northcliffe, that the rise of New Journalism and, in particular, Lord Northcliffe’s dominance of the press, laid the foundation for the Liberal Party’s demise. “Alexa, Am I A Murderer?”: An Analysis Of Whether The First Amendment Protects Smart Speaker Communications, Josie A. Bates

State v. Bates poses interesting First Amendment questions that go far beyond the case itself, such as whether communications to and from smart speakers are protected under the First Amendment and, if so, whether the government must therefore meet a heightened standard before obtaining information from these devices. But currently, there are no definite answers. Thus, this analysis will attempt to answer these questions as well as offer general guidance for the future of First and Fourth Amendment law in the age of ever-changing technological advancements and never-ending criminal accusations.

Part II of this Comment explores the current state of mental health in the legal profession and the shortcomings of state bar associations, lawyer assistance programs “LAPs”), and courts applying the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) in combating the profession’s mental health problem. Part III then examines practical steps the profession can take at the law school level that will aid in eliminating the stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment in the legal profession, thus addressing the problem at its source.

The COVID-19 pandemic, killings of George Floyd and others, and civil unrest created dislocation, hardship, and uncertainty. For millions of people, it included deaths in family, unemployment, and serious mental and physical illness. Graduates of professional schools preparing to take licensing examinations faced unexpected obstacles in meeting licensing standards for their chosen professions. It quickly became apparent, for example, that the usual licensing examination arrangements were problematic. The question for licensing authorities in 2020 was what accommodations would be appropriate to take account of the disruptions applicants faced while fully protecting the public’s interest in careful licensing.

Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (“SPACs”) have been called “Wall Street’s biggest gold rush of recent years.” In reality, they are just another version of an old strategy to exploit a loophole in the federal securities laws that issuers of stock have used to avoid full registration with the SEC, the federal agency set up to administer and enforce the securities laws. The SPAC process circumvents that important protection for investors by taking private firms public through the back door—merging them into shell corporations. Those are companies whose shares are widely held but have no operations or assets.

The dedicated stream of learning from others’ failure has gained increasing attention in entrepreneurship education research and—because of the COVID-19 crisis—among practitioners. The emerging literature on entrepreneurship education addresses this important phenomenon but lacks specific theoretical underpinnings; its new approaches to and empirical inquiry are one-sided.
