Exploring The Mind Of The Domestic Feline, Felice A. Murden Nov 2023

Exploring The Mind Of The Domestic Feline, Felice A. Murden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The domestic feline has lived among humans for thousands of years, dispersing across the world as they provided companionship along trade routes. But, as this relationship has persisted, the cognition of these pets is seldom studied compared to other companion animals. Cats have become the second largest population of companion animals following dogs. Much of what is perceived about the cognition of these animals is anecdotal; empirical evidence is needed. These studies examine three aims to enrich the growing literature on feline cognition in the areas of quantity discrimination, episodic memory, and individual recognition. A total of 130 domestic cats, …

Integrating A Virtual Science Outreach Into The Science Classroom Through Participatory Action Research, Shelby Anne Montague Nov 2023

Integrating A Virtual Science Outreach Into The Science Classroom Through Participatory Action Research, Shelby Anne Montague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Calls for increased involvement in science outreach have come from scientists (Alberts, 2018; Friedman, 2008), from professional organizations (Jayaratne et al., 2003; Lee, 2018; Toolin, 2004) and from funding agencies (Broadening Participation, 2008; Catsambis, 1995) to increase students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and STEM careers. One model of science outreach is the scientist in the classroom model, where a STEM professional visits a school classroom either in-person (Peker et al., 2012; Pratt and Yezierski, 2018) or virtually (Barry et al., 2022; McCombs et al., 2007). The St. Jude Virtual Journal Club is a scientist in the …

Manipulating And Assaying Chromatin Architecture Around Enhancer Elements In Vivo, John Lawrence Carter Nov 2023

Manipulating And Assaying Chromatin Architecture Around Enhancer Elements In Vivo, John Lawrence Carter

Theses and Dissertations

There are about 20,000 genes in the human genome. The lowly nematode worm, C. elegans, has about the same number of genes. How could two organisms that are so different arise from a similar number of genes? The answer is epigenetics, or the factors that help control when and where genes are expressed. There are many layers that comprise the epigenetic control of genes. One of which is the structure or architecture of chromatin. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and proteins. Histone proteins with DNA wrapped around them form the fundamental component of chromatin, the nucleosome. Chromatin exists in …

Optimizing Virulence And Understanding The Endophytic Colonization Of Metarhizium Spp. In Sweetpotato For The Control Of Cylas Formicarius Elegantulus (Summers), Santosh Bhandari Nov 2023

Optimizing Virulence And Understanding The Endophytic Colonization Of Metarhizium Spp. In Sweetpotato For The Control Of Cylas Formicarius Elegantulus (Summers), Santosh Bhandari

LSU Master's Theses

In the United States, control of the sweetpotato weevil [SPW, Cylas formicarius elegantulus (Summers)] occurs through quarantine and regular use of chemical insecticides. However, an overreliance on chemical control may lead to resistance. Entomopathogenic fungi have potential to act as an alternative to chemical control. In this study, we assessed four different strains of Metarhizium isolated from soil collected in Louisiana (Mp-K048, Ma-K056, Mr-K082, and Mr-K101) and compared them to a well-known licensed strain (Mb-ARSEF 1095) for virulence against C. formicarius elegantulus. Results suggested that Mp-K048, Ma-K056, and Mr-K082 …

A Study Of Tissue-Specific Rho Signaling Activation During Tubular Organ Formation In Drosophila, Charlotte Jean-Louise Adams Nov 2023

A Study Of Tissue-Specific Rho Signaling Activation During Tubular Organ Formation In Drosophila, Charlotte Jean-Louise Adams

LSU Master's Theses

Several organs within the human body are tubular in structure. In the event of a malfunction in the development of these tubular structures, maladies like spina bifida, anencephaly, and several other defects can arise. To understand the mechanisms of tubular organ formation, we use the Drosophila embryonic salivary gland (SG) as a model. During embryogenesis, SG cells undergo a series of cell shape changes, like apical constriction, to accommodate the developing gland. Apical constriction is regulated in part by the signal of the secreted ligand Folded gastrulation (Fog) and its G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) at the cell membrane, which leads …

Determining The Effects Of Propionate On Listeria Monocytogenes Lysozyme Susceptibility, Jeanne Paula E. Sering Nov 2023

Determining The Effects Of Propionate On Listeria Monocytogenes Lysozyme Susceptibility, Jeanne Paula E. Sering

Honors Theses

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive facultative anaerobe and harmful pathogen transmitted through contaminated food. Listeriosis, the infection associated with L. monocytogenes, is rare but potentially fatal, with a twenty to thirty percent mortality rate. For that reason, the lack of safe strategies to prevent infections can be detrimental to public health. Current infection preventative strategies rely on stringent food surveillance and recalls, but we want to determine alternative tactics to further protect the public from L. monocytogenes. More specifically, we want to identify environmental factors that can compromise the ability of L. monocytogenes to cause infections before the pathogen reaches …

Micro-Fibrillated Cellulose In Lignin–Phenol–Formaldehyde Adhesives For Plywood Production, Sheikh Ali Ahmed, Reza Hosseinpourpia, Stergios Adamopoulos Nov 2023

Micro-Fibrillated Cellulose In Lignin–Phenol–Formaldehyde Adhesives For Plywood Production, Sheikh Ali Ahmed, Reza Hosseinpourpia, Stergios Adamopoulos

Michigan Tech Publications

Petrochemical-based phenol–formaldehyde (PF) adhesives are widely used in plywood production. To substitute phenol in the synthesis of PF adhesives, lignin can be added due to its structural similarity to phenol. Moreover, micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) can further enhance the bond performance, mechanical properties, and toughness of adhesive systems. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesion performance of lignin–PF (LPF) adhesives reinforced with MFC. In LPF formulations, three levels of MFC (0, 15, and 30 wt% based on the total solid content of adhesives) were added to the homogenous adhesive mixture. Three-layer plywood panels from birch (Betula pendula …

An Exploration Of Tissue Specific Impedance Using Microneedle Based Wearable Sensors, Kaitlyn J.H. Read Nov 2023

An Exploration Of Tissue Specific Impedance Using Microneedle Based Wearable Sensors, Kaitlyn J.H. Read

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Within this research, I have developed a microneedle-based wearable sensor for plants and fungi, to measure the electrical impedance of different tissues. Electrical impedance measures the physical properties of a material while allowing complex biological systems to be modeled onto a simplified electrical circuit. Microneedles allow for electrical impedance to measure specific tissues without the insulative properties of the cuticle and can be applied to delicate tissues. I have demonstrated the tissue specificity, novel attachment methods, as well as use on both plants and fungi. In chapter 1, I applied microneedle-based impedance to the leaf midrib of a sorghum and …

The northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica barberi Smith & Lawrence (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a major pest of maize in the United States Corn Belt. Recently, resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize was reported in North Dakota and increased use of Bt maize hybrids could facilitate resistance evolution in other maizeproducing states. In this study, susceptibility to Bt proteins was evaluated in wild D. barberi populations from 8 fields collected in 5 different states (Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, and North Dakota). Field populations were compared to a susceptible D. barberi colony in seedling and diet toxicity assays conducted with 3 …

Monitoring Brain Region-Specific Control Of Protein Turnover And Concentration Using Proteomics, Rebecca Suzanne Burlett Nov 2023

Monitoring Brain Region-Specific Control Of Protein Turnover And Concentration Using Proteomics, Rebecca Suzanne Burlett

Theses and Dissertations

Regulation of metabolism is vital to health and lies at the core of many different diseases. The breakdown of metabolisms' regulation within the brain can lead to neurological disease like Alzheimer's Disease (AD). AD is known to affect brain regions responsible for memory and memory processing like the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. The regulation of these regions' protein quality, synthesis, and degradation deviate from 'normal' or 'healthy' levels when AD is happening. It is known there is a breakdown of regulation in those regions; however, little is known about the specifics of regulation in healthy brains regions or how it …

Identification Of Biomarkers Of Sub-Lethal Algal Toxin Exposure In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) And Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Using Differential Gene Expression Analysis, Brandon Ellingson Nov 2023

Identification Of Biomarkers Of Sub-Lethal Algal Toxin Exposure In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) And Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Using Differential Gene Expression Analysis, Brandon Ellingson

Biology Theses

Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) and Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are important culturally, recreationally, economically, and are a common aquaculture species in Canada and the United States. In the Pacific Northwest, blooms of toxic algae result in millions of dollars annually in losses for salmonid aquaculture producers. Blooms of harmful cyanobacteria produce microcystins which have been linked to net-pen liver disease which has large financial impacts on net pen salmon operations. Microcystin-LR, the most toxic variant, bioaccumulates in the liver and disrupts normal cellular activity by inhibiting protein phosphatases leading to deleterious effects on growth, immune status, and liver function. To …

Political Feasibility And A Global Climate Treaty, David Lefkowitz Nov 2023

Political Feasibility And A Global Climate Treaty, David Lefkowitz

Philosophy Faculty Publications

I contend that to be politically feasible a global climate treaty must satisfy the International Paretian principle (IP). I begin by defending IP as a principle of instrumental rationality that reflects the fact of extremely limited altruism vis-à-vis foreigners. I then address two objections to my thesis. One holds that an IP treaty is either economically infeasible or, contrary to its proponents’ claim, does not require side payments from poor states to rich ones. The other holds poor states will reject any climate treaty that requires such side payments because it ignores or exacerbates their unjust treatment by rich states.

Exploring The Impact Of A Student-Faculty Partnership Program At A Hispanic Serving Institution, Alyssa G. Cavazos, Lesley Chapa, Javier Cavazos Vela

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Guided by a strength-based framework and counter-storying lens, we use a qualitative case study approach (Cook-Sather, 2020; Cook-Sather & Motz-Storey, 2016) to explore students’ experiences with a teaching partnership program. A Students as Learners and Teachers (SaLT) model to student-instructor partnership positions students as consultants in a faculty member’s course in which they are not currently enrolled (Cook-Sather, 2020). Following a case study analysis with student and faculty partners in a SaLT program at a HSI, several themes were identified. Themes emerging from student participants included: empathy, personal growth, solidarity, and feedback awareness. Faculty partners’ themes included: receptivity, resistance, and …

Employing The Use Of Molecular Dynamics To Explore Protein Stability And Optimize Free Energy Protocols, Taylor A. Rodman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Molecular dynamics (MD) is a powerful technique that can be used to provide informationabout a system over time. MD simulations can be used to explore behaviors of many systems such as protein-ligand interactions protein-protein interactions. Additionally, these simulations can be used to generate trajectories of a system to further be used for free energy simulations. The work discussed in Chapter 2 involves the use MD simulations to identify potential drug candidates capable of binding to and stabilizing the nuclear binding domain of the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator protein. Using ProBiS, we were able to find a potential binding site …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Antimicrobial resistance increases infection morbidity in both adults and children, necessitating the development of new therapeutic options. Telavancin, an antibiotic approved in the United States for certain bacterial infections in adults, has not been examined in pediatric patients. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the short-term safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) of a single intravenous infusion of telavancin in pediatric patients. Single-dose safety and PK of 10 mg/kg telavancin was investigated in pediatric subjects >12 months to ≤17 years of age with known or suspected bacterial infection. Plasma was collected up to 24-h post-infusion and analyzed for concentrations of …

Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) is the mainstay of treatment for patients diagnosed with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). One significant challenge in the effectiveness of this therapy is the potential development of resistance mechanisms, where autophagy up-regulation has been proposed as a key contributing factor. However, there is a lack of reliable biomarkers to predict outcomes on these patients. Interestingly, for addressing this gap, extracellular vesicles (EVs) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have emerged as potential sources of such biomarkers. In this study, we investigated EV-associated miRNAs and presence of autophagic CTCs in prospectively collected serial samples from 38 …

SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines are administered as effective prophylactic measures for reducing virus transmission rates and disease severity. To enhance the durability of post-vaccination immunity and combat SARS-CoV-2 variants, boosters have been administered to two-dose vaccinees. However, long-term humoral responses following booster vaccination are not well characterized. A 16-member cohort of healthy SARS-CoV-2 naïve participants were enrolled in this study during a three-dose BNT162b2 vaccine series. Serum samples were collected from vaccinees over 420 days and screened for antigen (Ag)-specific antibody titers, IgG subclass distribution, and neutralizing antibody (nAb) responses. Vaccine boosting restored peak Ag-specific titers with sustained α-RBD IgG and …

Urinary Tract Infections: A Review Of The Current Diagnostics Landscape, Braith Grey, Mathew Upton, Lovleen Tina Joshi Nov 2023

Urinary Tract Infections: A Review Of The Current Diagnostics Landscape, Braith Grey, Mathew Upton, Lovleen Tina Joshi

School of Biomedical Sciences

Urinary tract infections are the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Infections can range from mild, recurrent (rUTI) to complicated (cUTIs), and are predominantly caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Antibiotic therapy is important to tackle infection; however, with the continued emergence of antibiotic resistance there is an urgent need to monitor the use of effective antibiotics through better stewardship measures. Currently, clinical diagnosis of UTIs relies on empiric methods supported by laboratory testing including cellular analysis (of both human and bacterial cells), dipstick analysis and phenotypic culture. Therefore, development of novel, sensitive and specific diagnostics is an important means to …
