We used diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to quantify tissue absorption and scattering-based parameters in similarly sized tumors derived from a panel of four isogenic murine breast cancer cell lines (4T1, 4T07, 168FARN, 67NR) that are each capable of accomplishing different steps of the invasion-metastasis cascade. We found lower tissue scattering, increased hemoglobin concentration, and lower vascular oxygenation in indolent 67NR tumors incapable of metastasis compared with aggressive 4T1 tumors capable of metastasis. Supervised learning statistical approaches were able to accurately differentiate between tumor groups and classify tumors according to their ability to accomplish each step of the invasion-metastasis cascade. We investigated …

Debilitating abdominal pain is a common symptom affecting most patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). There are multiple underlying mechanisms that contribute to CP-related pain, which makes successful treatment difficult. The identification of biomarkers for subtypes of pain could provide viable targets for nonopioid interventions and the development of mechanistic approaches to pain management in CP. Nineteen inflammation- and nociception-associated proteins were measured in serum collected from 358 subjects with definite CP enrolled in PROspective Evaluation of Chronic Pancreatitis for EpidEmiologic and Translational StuDies, a prospective observational study of pancreatitis in US adult subjects. First, serum levels of putative biomarkers were …

When can scientific findings from experimental psychology be confidently applied to legal issues? And when applications have clear limits, do legal commentators readily acknowledge them? To address these questions, we survey recent findings from an emerging field of research on research (i.e., metaresearch). We find that many aspects of experimental psychology’s research and reporting practices threaten the validity and generalizability of legally relevant research findings, including those relied on by courts and policy-setting bodies. As a case study, we appraise the empirical claims relied on by commentators claiming that implicit bias deeply affects legal proceedings and practices, and that training …

Understanding the drivers of speciation is fundamental in evolutionary biology, and recent studies highlight hybridization as an important evolutionary force. Using whole-genome sequencing data from 22 species of guenons (tribe Cercopithecini), one of the world's largest primate radiations, we show that rampant gene flow characterizes their evolutionary history and identify ancient hybridization across deeply divergent lineages that differ in ecology, morphology, and karyotypes. Some hybridization events resulted in mitochondrial introgression between distant lineages, likely facilitated by cointrogression of coadapted nuclear variants. Although the genomic landscapes of introgression were largely lineage specific, we found that genes with immune functions were overrepresented …

Assessing The Effects Of Non-Native Flowering Plants And Anti-Herbivory Plastic (Vexar®) Tubes On Insect Visitation To Native Plants, Emily R. Sun
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) are among the most prominent pollinators of the flowering plants and play an essential role in maintaining ecosystem function. Disruption of plant-pollinator interactions is a growing global concern because of the implications for biodiversity, ecosystem health, and agriculture. The incursion of non-native plants globally is seen to adversely affect native plants and alter plant-pollinator communities. In chapter one, I examined the effects of a non-native weed, Sisymbrium altissimum (tall tumblemustard), on bee visitation to nearby native Sphaeralcea munroana (Munro’s globemallow), including genera-specific differences among bees. The most common bee genera were Andrena, Colletes, Diadasia, Halictus, and …

The endometrium is a unique and highly regenerative tissue with crucial roles during the reproductive lifespan of a woman. As the first site of contact between mother and embryo, the endometrium, and its critical processes of decidualization and immune cell recruitment, play a leading role in the establishment of pregnancy, embryonic development, and reproductive capacity. These integral processes are achieved by the concerted actions of steroid hormones and a myriad of growth factor signaling pathways. This review focuses on the roles of the transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) pathway in the endometrium during the earliest stages of pregnancy through the …

Analyses Of Mybl1 In Triple Negative Breast Cells And Validation Of Genes Colocalized To Chromosome 8q Loci, La Tajia D. Thirston
Theses (2016-Present)
Fifteen percent of breast cancer are characterized as the triple negative breast cancer subtype. The cancers are recognized as negative for estrogen, progesterone and ErRB2 receptors, genes that function as transcription and growth factor functions, respectively. Previous data show the MYBL1 transcription factor is over-expressed in some triple negative breast cancers-suggesting dysregulation of the gene in the cancers. MYBL1 gene is a strong transcriptional regulator associated with regulation of cell cycle proliferation which is a key event in cancer progression. To determine genes either directly or indirectly associating with MYBL1 in these cancers we knocked the gene down, performed microarray …

Introduction: Disaster Medicine (DM) is the clinical specialty whose expertise includes the care and management of patients and populations outside conventional care protocols. While traditional standards of care assume the availability of adequate resources, DM practitioners operate in situations where resources are not adequate, necessitating a modification in practice. While prior academic efforts have succeeded in developing a list of core disaster competencies for emergency medicine residency programs, international fellowships, and affiliated health care providers, no official standardized curriculum or consensus has yet been published to date for DM fellowship programs based in the United States.

Artificial Light At Night Alters Predation On Colour-Polymorphic Camouflaged Prey, Emma Moyse, Louise Firth, Tim Smyth, Thomas Davies, Svenja Tidau
Artificial Light At Night Alters Predation On Colour-Polymorphic Camouflaged Prey, Emma Moyse, Louise Firth, Tim Smyth, Thomas Davies, Svenja Tidau
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts biological processes across taxa and at all levels of organisation. Despite growing interest in this globally pervasive sensory pollutant, its impact on colour-guided processes remains largely unexplored. This is especially concerning given the rapid transition in recent years away from narrow-spectrum lighting and towards broad-spectrum options such as white LEDs, which are rich in the short wavelengths of light to which many taxa are particularly sensitive. Camouflage is particularly likely to be disrupted by broader spectra of ALAN due to changes in conspicuousness in background matching prey, which may alter prey recognition in visually …

Using Ecological Momentary Assessments To Understand How Drinking During Special Occasions Relates To Parenting Behaviors, Bridget Freisthler, Joselyn Sarabia, Jennifer Price Wolf
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background: Drinking on special occasions (e.g., Super Bowl, Christmas) often results in more alcohol consumed. Further, police often report higher levels of crime, such as assaults and domestic violence, on days of major sporting events (e.g., Super Bowl, World Cup). Yet, drinking behaviors of parents during special occasions or large sporting events have not been assessed for their effects on parenting behaviors. Here, we assess the relationship between drinking during the Super Bowl and on Valentine's Day to determine whether they differ. Methods: Participants, recruited from social media, completed a 40-min baseline survey and 14 days of three daily Ecological …

Fishes and other consumers excrete metabolic waste products, including dissolved nutrients rich in nitrogen, which is an essential nutrient for primary production. Relatively little is known about the magnitude and variability of nutrients excreted by fishes in kelp forest ecosystems and whether consumer-derived nutrients are important for supporting kelp productivity. In this study, the supply of ammonium (NH4+) excreted by the dominant fishes (30 species representing ∼85% of total fish biomass) was investigated on nearshore rocky reefs in California. Using rapid field incubations, the amount of excreted dissolved ammonium was measured as a function of body size (n = 460 …

Background: Up to 40% of the world population live in areas where mosquitoes capable of transmitting the dengue virus, including Aedes aegypti, coexist with humans. Understanding how mosquito egg development and oviposition are regulated at the molecular level may provide new insights into novel mosquito control strategies. Previously, we identified a protein named eggshell organizing factor 1 (EOF1) that when knocked down with RNA interference (RNAi) resulted in non-melanized and fragile eggs that did not contain viable embryos. Results: In this current study, we performed a comprehensive RNAi screen of putative A. aegypti eggshell proteins to identify additional proteins that …

Regional carbon budget assessments attribute and track changes in carbon sources and sinks and support the development and monitoring the efficacy of climate policies. We present a comprehensive assessment of the natural and anthropogenic carbon (C-CO2) fluxes for Australasia as a whole, as well as for Australia and New Zealand individually, for the period from 2010 to 2019, using two approaches: bottom-up methods that integrate flux estimates from land-surface models, data-driven models, and inventory estimates; and top-down atmospheric inversions based on satellite and in situ measurements. Our bottom-up decadal assessment suggests that Australasia's net carbon balance was close to carbon …

Flow Electrode Capacitive Deionization Using Mxene Suspension Electrodes For Energy Efficient Water Remediation, Naqsh E. Mansoor
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The growing global demand for clean water, coupled with increasing concerns around aquatic pollution, necessitate the development of high performing and energy-efficient technologies for wastewater remediation. Capacitive Deionization (CDI) has emerged as a promising electrochemical method for desalination and removal of contaminants from various water sources. Despite its potential, CDI faces a significant bottleneck concerning the selection and optimization of suitable electrode materials. The choice of electrode materials critically influences the performance and efficiency of the CDI system, with the quest for an ideal material remaining a challenging and ongoing research endeavor. This dissertation explores potential of using MXene materials …

Global temperature is increasing due to anthropogenic activities and the effects of elevated temperature on DNA lesions are not well documented in marine organisms. The American oyster (Crassostrea virginica, an edible and commercially important marine mollusk) is an ideal shellfish species to study oxidative DNA lesions during heat stress. In this study, we examined the effects of elevated temperatures (24, 28, and 32 °C for one-week exposure) on heat shock protein-70 (HSP70, a biomarker of heat stress), 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG, a biomarker of pro-mutagenic DNA lesion), double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), γ-histone family member X (γH2AX, a molecular biomarker of DNA damage), …

Oxalic acid (OA) is a unique organic acid that commonly occurs in plants with distinct functions in modulating metabolic processes. To date, the role of OA has primarily been studied in the deactivation of copper-containing preservatives, detoxification of aluminium toxicity and remediation of organic pollutants. During the last two decades, OA has been considered as an antioxidant compound with focus on its potential to enhance crop yield, improve fruit quality, boost nutritional profile, and delay postharvest senescence in fruit and vegetables. It has been established that pre- and postharvest OA application delays ripening and senescence by down-regulating physiological processes such …

Hybridisation and introgression of eukaryotic genomes can generate new species or subsume existing ones, with direct and indirect consequences for biodiversity. An understudied component of these evolutionary forces is their potentially rapid effect on host gut microbiomes, and whether these pliable microcosms may serve as early biological indicators of speciation. We address this hypothesis in a field study of angelfishes (genus Centropyge), which have one of the highest prevalence of hybridisation within coral reef fish. In our study region of the Eastern Indian Ocean, the parent fish species and their hybrids cohabit and display no differences in their diet, behaviour, …

Core facility laboratories are an essential part of the successful research enterprise of many universities around the world. Core facilities provide state-of-the-art instrumentation and technologies to support research of all faculty, postdocs, and students on a fee-for-service basis. Academic next-generation sequencing cores are typically "full service" facilities, and access to and training on their instrumentation is limited to core staff. To address these limitations, we provided graduate students with technical training at our core facility. Extremum Seeking Control Algorithms For Extremely High Frequency Antenna System Pointing, Scott Shore
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The research examines the application of extremum seeking control (ESC) algorithms to ground station antenna pointing for extremely high frequency (EHF) communication systems. ESC algorithms search for local maxima or minima by locating where an objective function gradient goes to zero. With wireless communication expanding into higher frequencies, the ground station pointing requirement is increasing. ESC presents a method which utilizes available equipment and information to perform ground station pointing. Additionally, ESC algorithms do not rely on assumptions or approximations needed for other techniques. The dissertation demonstrates ESC algorithm feasibility for the ground station pointing problem, benchmarks the ESC algorithms …

IMPORTANCE: Representative surgical case sampling, rather than universal review, is used by US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and private-sector national surgical quality improvement (QI) programs to assess program performance and to inform local QI and performance improvement efforts. However, it is unclear whether case sampling is robust for identifying hospitals with safety or quality concerns.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the sampling strategy used by several national surgical QI programs provides hospitals with data that are representative of their overall quality and safety, as measured by 30-day mortality.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This comparative effectiveness study was a national, hospital-level …

Desquamating skin lesions are a non-specific finding that requires urgent evaluation given the life-threatening severity of one of the potential causes, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). Methotrexate toxicity, also known in its cutaneous form as methotrexate epidermal necrosis (MEN), is another entity that presents similarly to SJS and is described here in a patient with increased risk due to his age, chronic kidney disease, and increased dose of methotrexate. His diagnosis was complicated by other historical risk factors, including antibiotic use, but was eventually elucidated when he was noted to have bone marrow suppression. Given the pathophysiology of SJS, a T-cell mediated …

Background:
Outcomes for children with relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) are poor and new therapies are needed. Pevonedistat is an inhibitor of the NEDD-8 activating enzyme, a key regulator of the ubiquitin proteasome system that is responsible for protein turnover, with protein degradation regulating cell growth and survival.
Procedure:
We evaluated the feasibility, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of pevonedistat (20 mg/m2 days 1, 3, 5) in combination with azacitidine, fludarabine, cytarabine (aza-FLA) in children with R/R AML and MDS (NCT03813147). Twelve patients were enrolled, median age was 13 years (range 1-21). Median …

In a mass casualty medical evacuation after a bioaerosol (BA) dispersal event, a decontamination (DC) method is needed that can both decontaminate and prevent biological particle (BP) re-aerosolization (RA) of contaminated clothes. However, neither the efficacy of current DC methods nor the risk of BP RA is greatly explored in the existing literature. The goals of this study were to develop a repeatable method to quantify the RA of a biological contaminant off military uniform fabric swatches and to test the efficacy of one DC protocol (high-volume, low-pressure water) using 1 µm polystyrene latex (PSL) spheres as a surrogate. A …

Background: von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a multimeric glycoprotein critically involved in hemostasis, thrombosis, and inflammation. VWF function is regulated by its antigen levels, multimeric structures, and the state of enzymatic cleavage. Population studies in the past have focused almost exclusively on VWF antigen levels in cross-sectional study designs.
Objective: To identify subjects in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Community study who had persistently low and high VWF antigen over 10 years and to quantify longitudinal changes in the biological activities and cleavage of VWF in these subjects.
Methods: We measured VWF antigen, propeptide, adhesive activities, and cleavage by ADAMTS-13 quantified …

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) recommends carrier screening for all pregnant women regardless of race or ethnicity. In recent years, the ACMG broadened the guidelines to include expanded carrier screening (ECS) which can screen for 112 conditions. This study seeks to explore the perceptions of pregnant Latina women about the benefits and concerns related to ECS use. Partnering with prenatal clinics in Texas, we conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 32 pregnant Latina women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy. NVivo 8 was used to conduct content analysis and emergent coding of the data. Participants …
