The Dictator Novel In Ya Latinx Fantasy, Catherine Gallegos
The Dictator Novel In Ya Latinx Fantasy, Catherine Gallegos
English (MA) Theses
The Dictator Novel in YA Latinx Fantasy explores the power of the dictator novel in Latinx literature, specifically within the young adult fantasy genre. Drawing upon the work of Jennifer Harford-Vargas to examine the relationship between the forms of power and the power of the narrative form and how this creates ways to defy and rebel against repressive authoritarian figures. The young adult Latinx fantasy novel calls for a challenge to the authoritarian presence that occupies these imagined worlds that reach beyond the cycle of oppression and injustices that have silenced generation after generation. These YA Latinx fantasy novels use …
Design Of Human Serum Albumin And Adenovirus Conjugation Via Catcher/Tag Molecular Glue, Peijie Zhao
Design Of Human Serum Albumin And Adenovirus Conjugation Via Catcher/Tag Molecular Glue, Peijie Zhao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Adenovirus (Ad) has been the ideal cargo delivery mechanism, and its moderate immunological response makes it ideal for in vivo gene therapies since its discovery in 1953. However, the robust immunogenicity of the Ad capsid and low vaccine absorption via mucous membranes and epithelium put a limit on the process of developing intranasal vaccines. Efforts are being made to enhance the effectiveness of Ad vectors and numerous studies have demonstrated the remarkable capacity of human serum albumin (HSA) to extend plasma half-life and facilitate targeted intranasal delivery. In this study, we devised an innovative method for employing the Catcher/Tag molecular …
Inhibition Of Venom Gland V-Atpase Proton Pumps And Their Role In Snake Venom Acidification And Storage, Samuel Kerwin
Inhibition Of Venom Gland V-Atpase Proton Pumps And Their Role In Snake Venom Acidification And Storage, Samuel Kerwin
Master's Theses
Venomous snakes are capable of storing venom for years while maintaining functionality upon injection, with no known harmful impact to their own physiology; however, the mechanisms behind this are poorly understood. Several major components of venom, most notably SVMPs, are autolytic when active, suggesting the presence of an inhibitory environment during storage to preserve venom functionality. It is hypothesized that the venom gland is continuously acidified by vacuolar rotary proton pump mechanisms (V-ATPases) localized in mitochondria-rich cells found in small concentration within the venom gland secretory epithelium, keeping the venom inert at a pH of 5.4-5.6 during the production/storage period. …

The science of mountainous hydrology spans the atmosphere through the bedrock and inherently crosses physical and disciplinary boundaries: land–atmosphere interactions in complex terrain enhance clouds and precipitation, while watersheds retain and release water over a large range of spatial and temporal scales. Limited observations in complex terrain challenge efforts to improve predictive models of the hydrology in the face of rapid changes. The Upper Colorado River exemplifies these challenges, especially with ongoing mismatches between precipitation, snowpack, and discharge. Consequently, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility has deployed an observatory to the East River Watershed …

Many coastal forests stretching from central California to southwest Oregon are threatened or have been impacted by the invasive forest pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, the cause of sudden oak death. We analyzed a set of stand-level forest treatments aimed at preventing or mitigating disease impacts on stand composition, biomass, and fuels using a before–after-control-intervention experiment with a re-evaluation after 5 years. We compared the effects of restorative management for invaded stands and preventative treatments for uninvaded forests with two stand-level experiments. The restorative treatments contrasted two approaches to mastication, hand-crew thinning, and thinning with pile burning with untreated controls replicated …

Research Summary: Several upper echelons studies have found that firms led by female executives are less likely to engage in risky endeavors than those led by male top executives. We argue that conceptualizing female CEOs as universally conservative decision-makers may paint too simplistic a picture and that the impact of CEO gender on strategic decision-making may vary significantly depending on the given situation CEOs are experiencing. We integrate executive job demands and gender research to propose that scrutiny will exhibit differential effects on female and male CEOs' acquisition activity. We show that in high-scrutiny contexts, the difference between male and …
Identification And Characterization Of Geotrichum Candidum Isolates From Peach With Reduced Sensitivity To Propiconazole, Sara Price
All Theses
Geotrichum candidum Link (1809) is a yeast-like fungus that causes sour rot of stone fruits, including peach (Prunus persica). The disease caused damage between 2021 and 2023 to the peach crop kept in cold storage at a commercial farm in South Carolina despite preharvest and postharvest applications of fungicides. Isolates from 41 symptomatic fruit, from a South Carolina (SC) commercial packing house, as well as other isolates obtained from South Carolina were identified to be G. candidum based on species-specific PCR amplifications of the β tubulin gene. Commonly used postharvest fungicide fludioxonil had no effect on G. candidum mycelial growth …

On Inmates And Friendship, Jared Deeds
On Inmates And Friendship, Jared Deeds
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
That humanity both cherishes friendship and finds it to be fundamental for its own good should be reason enough to justify its legal protection. Yet, there is a serious deficiency of legal discourse on the rights and liberties of friends in America’s courts. In the absence of such discourse—perhaps partially because of it—friendship as a social institution experiences a lack of legal protection in the United States. Though all friends may be exposed to abuses as a result of deficient safeguards, inmates and their unincarcerated friends suffer with particular severity.

Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensors Based On Non-Covalent Crosslinked Molecular Imprinted Polymers, Yuan Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis describes a series of optical chemosensors based on FRET between fluorophores on the polymer and the substrate. It involved the preparation of the polymer and nanoparticles for the chemosensor, and the sensing behavior based on the preparation methods.A photophysically inert sensor matrix was prepared by a robust and simple emulsion method. Stannic oxide encapsulated silica nanoparticles with diameters between 25 and 70 nm have been prepared by one-pot reverse-phase emulsion methodology. The constituents and core/shell morphology of the nanoparticles were demonstrated by electron microscopic technology, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) was …
Assessing The Role Of Groundwater In Road Salt Pollution Of Urban Lakes, Jacquelyn Molloseau
Assessing The Role Of Groundwater In Road Salt Pollution Of Urban Lakes, Jacquelyn Molloseau
Honors Projects
Salinization of freshwater ecosystems through the use of road de-icing salts has altered both the chemical and biological structures of these systems. In addition to the contamination of surface waters, there are also increasing concerns about how groundwater is being affected by road salt pollution and its role as a potential pathway for salt to reach other freshwater systems. This study focused on an area in eastern Grand Rapids, MI where salt pollution from winter applications to the East Beltline Highway is affecting a string of three residential lakes. To assess the potential role of groundwater in the pollution of …

Background: Alterations in DNA methylation (DNAm) have been reported to be a mechanism by which bariatric surgeries resulted in considerable metabolic improvements. Previous studies have mostly focused on change in DNAm following weight-loss interventions, yet whether DNAm prior to intervention can explain the variability in glycemic outcomes has not been investigated. Here, we aim to examine whether baseline DNAm is differentially associated with glycemic outcomes induced by different types of weight-loss interventions. Methods: Participants were 75 adults with severe obesity who underwent non-surgical intensive medical intervention (IMI), adjustable gastric band (BAND) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) (n = 25 each). …

Temporal Dynamics Of Faculty Hiring In Mathematics, Cody Fitzgerald, Yitong Huang, Katelyn Plaisier Leisman, Chad M. Topaz
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
University faculty hiring networks are known to be hierarchical and to exacerbate various types of inequity. Still, a detailed, historical understanding of hiring dynamics lacks in many academic fields. We focus on the field of mathematics, analyzing over 120,000 records from 150 institutions over seven decades to elucidate the temporal dynamics of hiring doctoral-granting (DG) faculty at the individual and departmental levels. We demonstrate that the disparity between the number of mathematics Ph.D.s awarded and the number of DG faculty positions filled has grown over time. Even institutions with the best records of DG faculty placement have experienced a temporal …

Does Social Organization, Litter Size, Sexual Dimorphism, And Phylogeny Influence Multiple Paternity In Mammals?, Madison Roberts
Honors Theses
Animal social systems are complex and the dynamics of one component could influence the dynamics of another. The aim of this literature search research was to determine the interrelatedness between mammalian social organization and mating system, two components of social systems. The mating system was represented by multiple paternity, the number of litters with more than one father, as genetic analysis tells which individuals reproduced with who. Variables that might influence multiple paternity amongst extant mammalian species included in this study are variable social organization, male social organization, mean litter size, sexual dimorphism, and phylogenetics. Analysis was conducted using 56 …
Examining Task-Related Differences In The Error-Related Negativity (Ern) As A Function Of Cognitive Control Strategy And Trait Anxiety, Russell Mach
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety disorders pose a significant challenge to daily living, workplace productivity, and healthcare systems. Extant research supports empirical links between anxiety and brain-level error monitoring. The ERN – or error-related negativity – is one widely studied correlate of anxious symptomatology. Relatively stable individual differences in the ERN are inferred from electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings time-locked to the commission of mistakes. However, the assumed interchangeability of ERNs elicited under different experimental conditions has not been thoroughly evaluated. Canonical tasks for measuring the ERN may cue specific strategies for cognitive control, possibly producing divergent findings across studies. In a sample of 108 undergraduate …
Effect Of Onion Peel Bioactive Compounds On Gut Microbiome Of Obese Adults, Saad Al-Din Sifat
Effect Of Onion Peel Bioactive Compounds On Gut Microbiome Of Obese Adults, Saad Al-Din Sifat
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Obesity, a pervasive global health concern, involves a complex interplay between genetic factors, dietary patterns, and the gut microbiota. Onion peels are rich in polyphenols and known for their antioxidant properties. However, the effects of in-vitro digested onion peel extract has not been investigated thus far. This study therefore assesses the effects of digested bioactive compounds from onion peels, emphasizing gut microbiota shift and metabolites. Onion peel extract (OPE), digested onion peel extract (DOPE), and solid-phase-extracted digested onion peel extracts (SPE-DOPE) were analyzed for total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity. SPE-DOPE exhibited the highest TPC and antioxidant activity. Fecal …

Determining The Effects Of Glycocalyx Modifications On The Electrophysical Properties Of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Rominna E. Valentine Ico
Determining The Effects Of Glycocalyx Modifications On The Electrophysical Properties Of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Rominna E. Valentine Ico
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have gained popularity in clinical trials due to their multipotent differentiation characteristics, ability to secrete bioactive molecules, migrate into diseased or damaged tissues, and their immunosuppressive properties. HMSC cultures are heterogeneous, containing stem cells, partially differentiated progenitor cells, and fully differentiated cells. One of the major challenges with hMSCs therapeutic potential is the inability to select specific cell subpopulations due to an insufficient number of biomarkers. Often the biomarkers used, like those for fluorescence-activated cell sorting, are not sufficient to define hMSCs because they overlap with other cell types. Consequently, there is a need to …
Transitioning Into Kindergarten, Faith C. Dysard
Transitioning Into Kindergarten, Faith C. Dysard
Masters Projects
Historically, kindergarten is the place where many children receive their educational foundation. The current demand on children and educators has changed from play-based education to more of an academic focus, for which some children are not ready. At University Prep Art and Design Elementary School, incoming kindergartners are assessed when they are admitted and then invited to participate in a weeklong summer bridge program. This project will explain different factors that provide reasoning as to why children are not ready for kindergarten and give a layout of a transitional program that children, teachers, and families can participate in to better …
The "Messy Middle": A Framework For Analyzing Raciolinguistic Inequity, Casey Erin Anthony
The "Messy Middle": A Framework For Analyzing Raciolinguistic Inequity, Casey Erin Anthony
Graduate Masters Theses
Existing research has demonstrated that bilingual education in the United States is highly inequitable, providing greater benefits to white English speakers than to students from minoritized backgrounds (e.g., Babino & Stewart, 2017; Palmer, 2009). Additional research has suggested that bilingual spaces also uphold whiteness and English hegemony outside of classrooms, in spaces like parent groups to administrative decisions (e.g., Gallo, 2017; Jacobsen et al., 2019). This ethnographic case study of a Spanish-English Two-Way Dual Language (TWDL) elementary school examines raciolinguistic positioning and interactions among students, teachers, and parents. Drawing on dysconscious racism (King, 1991), LangCrit (Crump, 2014), and critical consciousness …

Unmanned Aircraft systems (UAS) can offer a valuable perspective for detecting and monitoring for eutrophication in bodies of water by providing high-resolution images and data assignments for algal blooms and nutrient levels. Eutrophication, the process by which water bodies become enriched with nutrients, has emerged as a critical factor in evaluating and maintaining water quality. In this study, we use DJI Inspire Pro 1 equipped with a Zenmuse X3 camera, attached with a Parrot Sequoia multispectral sensor was used to in conjunction with algorithms to retrieve Chlorophyll parameters for monitoring eutrophication. Although water quality parameters such as pH, nitrate, phosphate, …
The Mindful Way: An Explorative Case Study Of The Transformative Effects Of Afro Flow Yoga A Culturally Adapted Mindfulness Intervention On The Health And Well-Being Of Black Women, Danielle A. Jones
Education Doctoral
This qualitative phenomenological exploratory case study explored Afro Flow Yoga to evaluate its potential as a culturally adaptable mindfulness-based intervention for enhancing the health and well-being of Black women while addressing the historical ills and adverse effects of intersectionality. From its beginning, the United States has discriminated against and defeminized Black women while profiting from all aspects of their lives. To be Black and female in America is to experience perpetual racism, sexism, and other "isms" as forms of harm and oppression. Therefore, culturally adapted mindfulness interventions are essential to cater to the unique needs of Black women. The mindfulness …
Analysis Of Online Platforms’ Free Trial Strategies For Digital Content Subscription, Li Chen
Analysis Of Online Platforms’ Free Trial Strategies For Digital Content Subscription, Li Chen
College of Business and Economics
Adopting subscription models has become a popular trend in e-commerce. Digital content platforms often use free trials to attract potential subscribers. However, rigorous research on platforms’ free trial strategies is lacking. Our paper aims to fill this gap using a horizontal duopoly framework. We investigate both the scenario of market symmetry and of market asymmetry. We study the benchmark case with no free trial for each scenario and derive equilibrium results with free trial promotion. We find that the platform will not benefit from free trials unless consumers’ learning rate exceeds a threshold. When a free trial is introduced in …
