Understanding The Role Of Early-Stage Seed Development On Final Seed Weight By Linking Seed Physiology, Transcriptomics, And Environments In Soybean (Glycine Max (L.) Merr.), Ashwini Shivakumar

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Soybeans, which are widely grown in the United States, are used as food, animal feed, and industrial oil. The rise in plant-based diets highlights the high protein content and versatility of soybean. Understanding seed development is crucial for increasing yield. Soybean seed development includes three phases: lag, seed-filling, and maturation. Post-fertilization, the seed undergoes cell division in the lag phase, forming the embryo, endosperm, and seed coat. The embryo absorbs the endosperm and develops into two cotyledons. During the seed-filling phase, cotyledon cells accumulate starch, proteins, and lipids. During maturation, seeds dry out and become quiescent. Studies indicate that the …

Articles

The presence of sub-micron-sized plastics in the environment has been increasing, with the possible risks of these particles remaining relatively unknown. In order to assess the toxicity of these particles, 100 nm diameter green fluorescent nano-polystyrene spheres (NPS) (20–60 mg/L) were exposed to zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) to investigate the mortality, clearance rate and stress-related biomarker responses. D. polymorpha were collected and analysed with standard OECD toxicological tests and biomarker analysis to detect both physical and biochemical responses after exposure to NPS. The toxicity of the NPS to D. polymorpha was low, with 60 mg/L NPS causing a mortality rate …

Bioelectrics Publications

We previously reported that nano-pulse treatment (NPT), a pulsed power technology, resulted in 4T1-luc mammary tumor elimination and a strong in situ vaccination, thereby completely protecting tumor-free animals against a second live tumor challenge. The mechanism whereby NPT mounts effective antitumor immune responses in the 4T1 breast cancer predominantly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unanswered. In this study, orthotopic 4T1 mouse breast tumors were treated with NPT (100 ns, 50 kV/cm, 1000 pulses, 3 Hz). Blood, spleen, draining lymph nodes, and tumors were harvested at 4-h, 8-h, 1-day, 3-day, 7-day, and 3-month post-treatment intervals for the analysis of frequencies, death, …

Formation Rates Of Silver Metal Danoprisms As A Function Of Halide Concentration, Steven Akins Jan 2024

Formation Rates Of Silver Metal Danoprisms As A Function Of Halide Concentration, Steven Akins

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

anosystem morphology control is proving to be vital for developing nano technologies. This control allows for the optimization of a nanoparticle’s optical and electrical properties. One form of control is the addition of defects during nanocrystal formation. Nanoprisms are highly responsive to this form of control through halide concentration. However, the rate at which this control occurs has remained relatively unexplored. The formation kinetics of silver nanoprisms were monitored before, during, and after crystal formation as a function of halide concentration. The standard deviations between multiple replicates were found to be too large for this method to reach conclusions about …

Atg11 And Atg9 Interaction In Selective Autophagy, Chimi Dolker Sherpa Jan 2024

Atg11 And Atg9 Interaction In Selective Autophagy, Chimi Dolker Sherpa

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Selective autophagy, induced by cellular stresses, degrades/recycles a specific cargo. Ithelps prevent diseases like Parkinson’s, Huntington's, cancer, and bacterial infections. It involves the formation of an autophagosome, a double-membrane vesicle that takes the cargo to the vacuole/lysosome for degradation. Atg11, the central organizer of selective autophagy, acts as a scaffold protein, interacting with Atg9, Atg1 and other Atg proteins. Our research focuses on finding mutations in Atg11 that specifically disrupt its interaction with Atg9 without affecting its dimerization or interaction with Atg1. We targeted residues 455-535 of Atg11 as a putative Atg9 interaction site, performing mutagenesis on four key residues …

Family Context And Executive Functioning In Preschool-Age Children, Kristin Aho

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Executive functioning is predictive of school readiness, successful life endeavors, and other positive outcomes. The literature frequently explores how child executive functions are associated with characteristics of mother-child interactions as well as adverse environmental conditions such as poverty and chronic stress. Fewer studies, however, have taken a more nuanced approach to understanding how features of the immediate environment, such as family context, help or hinder the development of executive functions in young children. To address this gap, the current study explored how aspects of family context are associated with executive performance in a sample of preschool-age children. Specifically, the study …

A New Frontier Of Responsibility: Children's Attributions Of Moral Responsibility To Autonomous And Controlled Robots, Thomas M. Macko

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A prevailing theory in moral psychology, known as the Theory of Dyadic Morality, proposes that we evaluate moral transgressions primarily through weighing the mental states and intentions of both the perpetrator and the victim of a given transgression. Previous research has found adults and children similarly refer to mental states and intentions when making moral evaluations as third-party observers of a moral transgression. How might this framework apply to social robots, who arguably lack the mental states and intentions we can effortlessly identify in humans? The present study sought to examine how children view a social robot as culpable for …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV) is a negative-sense, tick-borne bunyavirus endemic to Europe, Asia, and Africa. CCHFV may cause a severe hemorrhagic disease with a case fatality rate of 5-70% and, to date, there are no widely available or highly efficacious vaccines or therapeutics. Because of its widespread distribution and lack of countermeasures, the WHO has listed CCHFV as a high priority pathogen.

Here, we report a self-replicating, alphavirus-based RNA vaccine that expresses the CCHFV nucleoprotein (repNP) and glycoprotein precursor (repGPC). Initial studies showed that repNP induces high titers of non-neutralizing anti-NP antibodies while repGPC stimulates a robust T-cell response. …
