Biomolecule Screen Identifies Several Inhibitors Of Salmonella Enterica Surface Colonization, Joseph Headrick, Amital Ohayon, Shannon Elliott, Jacob Schultz, Erez Mills, Erik Petersen

Faculty Open Access Works

Salmonella enterica is a foodborne pathogen commonly found in agricultural facilities; its prevalence, as well as increasing levels of disinfectant- and antibiotic-resistance, has significant costs for agriculture as well as human health. In an effort to identify potential new inhibitors of S. enterica on abiotic surfaces, we developed a biomolecule screen of nutrient-type compounds because nutrients would have lower toxicity in animal facilities and bacterial nutrient utilization pathways might prove less susceptible to the development of bacterial resistance. After screening 285 nutrient-type compounds, we identified ten that significantly inhibited the ability of S. enterica to colonize a plastic surface. After …

Zebrafish Electroretinogram Responses, Brooke Campbell Jan 2024

Zebrafish Electroretinogram Responses, Brooke Campbell

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of this project is to be able to streamline a protocol for conducting ERGs on zebrafish from mice ERG protocol already present in Dr. Renna’s lab. The objective is to create a protocol specifically for zebrafish and to eliminate any issues that occur when transiting from a mice ERG protocol to a zebrafish ERG protocol and to obtain a light response from zebrafish retinae in differing light intensities. Dr. Renna’s lab has designed an Ex Vivo ERG system with less electrical interference creating defined electrical responses from mouse retina. The setup allows for continual perfusion of the retinal …

Compliance And Roughness In Relation To Gecko Locomotion, Brooklynn Campbell Jan 2024

Compliance And Roughness In Relation To Gecko Locomotion, Brooklynn Campbell

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Geckos move efficiently through a variety of substrates, from swaying branches to wooden fences to the sides of structures. Previous studies have studied locomotion and adhesion on manmade and rough substrates; however, the work is limited when discussing locomotion and adhesion as a relationship of compliance and roughness. Ease of movement was quantified by speed, under the assumption that the faster a gecko moves, the easier it is for the gecko to cross the substrate. Gehyra oceanica geckos from Moorea, French Polynesia were tested on substrates varying in compliance and roughness with four different treatments in total. Compliance, roughness, and …

The Effect Of Early Intervention On Reducing Recidivism, Claire Meyer Jan 2024

The Effect Of Early Intervention On Reducing Recidivism, Claire Meyer

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The current punishment-based system has not led to promising recidivism rates showing the lack of effect it has on changing behavior. By working to understand the effect interventions can have on reducing recidivism, society can improve the criminal justice system. The intention of this paper is to show the benefits of moving to a system focused on rehabilitation instead of punishment, specifically for juvenile offenders. By conducting a literature review of available research, it can be seen that an incarceration-based system is not as effective as the implementation of intervention and prevention methods can be. Cognitive behavioral therapy and community-based …

Microglia Regulate Light Evoked Retinal Responses In The Zebrafish Retina., Brittney Moore Jan 2024

Microglia Regulate Light Evoked Retinal Responses In The Zebrafish Retina., Brittney Moore

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The primary goal of the project is to investigate the role of the interferon regulatory factor 9 (irf8) gene in the retinal function of zebrafish. My research aims to examine and compare the retinal responses of two subject groups: wildtype zebrafish and zebrafish with the irf8 gene knocked out. This project seeks to determine if irf8 knockout zebrafish lose visual system functionality before experiencing changes in retinal morphology. The primary technique to answer this research question is the electroretinogram, a commonly used method to examine retinal function. The final outcome of this project will be a scientific paper describing the …

The Effects Of Ethanol Exposure On Glucose And Lactate Levels In Crayfish, Mackenzie Kirwan Jan 2024

The Effects Of Ethanol Exposure On Glucose And Lactate Levels In Crayfish, Mackenzie Kirwan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of the project is to investigate and determine the effects of sunlight exposure and hormone levels. The circadian rhyth, which is heavily influenced by sunlight, not only affects the amount of sleep someone achieves, but is also related to behavior and mood, and heavily relies on the body’s hormones for proper regulation. The hormones that are prevelant to the circadian rhythm, and which will be studied in this experiment are cortisol, serotonin and melatonin. In this experiment, these three hormones will be extracted prior to alterations of light exposure. Animal test subjects will then undergo treatment of light …

Climate Change's Effect On Flow Regime, Alexander Ialenti Jan 2024

Climate Change's Effect On Flow Regime, Alexander Ialenti

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project will test to see if there is a percent increase in non-perennial streams sampled from 2003-2021. Using data provided by The Cleveland Metroparks, sampling events will be separated by date, flow regime classification, and rain data. Current literature supports the claim that many perennial streams, streams that flow year-round, will become non-perennial streams over time. This shift is predicted to be caused by a change in rain patterns. Both the interval between rain events and the intensity of rainfall per event are predicted to increase. My hypothesis is that there will be an increase in the percentage of …

Critical Race Theory Model Measure And Implementation In Curriculum, Taifha Natalee Alexander, Ahilan Arulanantham Jan 2024

Critical Race Theory Model Measure And Implementation In Curriculum, Taifha Natalee Alexander, Ahilan Arulanantham

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

This memorandum aims to explain the purpose of the following model measure. The proposed legislation would preserve the freedom of teachers to teach—and students to learn—about racism, including its history and on-going effects in this country. It does this by providing a framework through which state governments can encourage the teaching and learning of Critical Race Theory ("CRT") principles as a lens through which to teach and learn about racial inequality in America, its history, and its current manifestations, to enhance K-12 public school curricula.

We believe the model measure should be of interest to a broad range of …

Impacts To Anxiety, Depression, And Psycho-Spiritual Metrics After Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy In Palliative Care Patients At The Aims Institute, Thomas Luedeke

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

There is considerable evidence that palliative care patients disproportionately experience anxiety, depression, and existential distress related to their chronic illnesses. Additionally, conventional therapies tend to be less effective in the treatment of this patient population. As such, research is being conducted into novel therapies. One of the promising therapies currently under active investigation is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) which involves a combination of the administration of the dissociative anesthetic ketamine combined with psychotherapy.

Two clinical trials are being conducted at the Advanced Integrative Medical Sciences (AIMS) Institute in Seattle, WA, the purposes of which are to evaluate integrative care for patients …

Nursing Staff Training On Compounded Intranasal Ketamine For Treatment-Resistant Depression, Rimisha Lal, Gabrielle Son

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

A large proportion of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) do not receive adequate therapy benefits from conventional monoaminergic antidepressant drugs, leading to treatment-resistant depression (TRD) (Di Vincenzo et al., 2021). Treating MDD with two failed antidepressant trials can lead to TRD, a condition wherein patients are twice as likely to be hospitalized in comparison to depressed patients who are not treatment-resistant (Gaynes et al., 2020). MDD and dysthymia are jointly responsible for 46.9 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally, with each DALY equivalent to a healthy year of life lost to the disability caused by depressive disorders (Vos et …

Comprehensive Pavement Patching Tools And Web-Based Software For Pavement Condition Assessment And Visualization, Sneha Jha, Yaguang Zhang, Tandra Bagchi, Andrew Balmos, Bongsuk Park, John E. Haddock, Seonghwan Cho, James V. Krogmeier

JTRP Technical Reports

It is a common practice among state agencies to manually inspect road segments and decide maintenance requirements based on the pavement condition index (PCI). However, standalone PCI only evaluates the pavement surface condition. When coupled with the variability in human perception of pavement distress, this limits the accuracy of current pavement maintenance practices and undermines the automated pavement maintenance suggestions systems, especially for actionable recommendations related to accurate patching location, depth, and priority. This project explores integrating pavement structural and surface condition assessment with pavement ratings of distress to estimate the appropriate pavement patching strategy for accurate location, depth, and …

A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of Critical Race Theory Bans, Caroline Mala Corbin Jan 2024

A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of Critical Race Theory Bans, Caroline Mala Corbin

Articles

A majority of state legislatures have introduced bills prohibiting public schools from teaching certain "divisive concepts" attributed to critical race theory (CRT), with at least fifteen states successfully enacting them. This Article applies a critical race theory analysis to these critical race theory bans, finding that the bans embody white privilege and especially its companion, white fragility.

After providing a primer on critical race theory, Part I explains how the state bans profoundly misunderstand critical race theory, which focuses on how systems and institutions reproduce racial inequality. These bans, however, assume that racism is individual, intentional, and rare, and that …

Gender Regrets: Banning Abortion And Gender-Affirming Care, Noa Ben-Asher, Margot J. Pollans

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

In the spring of 2023, the New York Times published a piece entitled “How a Few Stories of Regret Fuel the Push to Restrict Gender Transition Care.” It features Chloe Cole, who lived as a transgender boy for several years but now identifies as a cisgender woman. Cole has become a poster child for the idea that gender-affirming care (“GAC”) for minors may lead to later regret and should therefore be restricted by the state. Cole, who has been travelling the country as part of a conservative lawmaking effort to ban GAC, received a standing ovation after Florida Governor …

In the summer of 2020, spurred by George Floyd’s murder and amid a worldwide pandemic, Black Lives Matter demonstrations peaked in the United States. The viral nature of the police violence that caused Floyd’s death was a triggering event for transnational Black Lives Matter protests. Around the world, millions took to the streets to demand justice. In Italy, a resounding demand that “Black Lives Matter” filled the streets during solidarity protests that occurred in Milan, Naples, and Rome. Less than six months later, in September 2020, the fatal civilian beating of Willy Monteiro Duarte, a Black Italian, revealed the necessity …

Transforming Legal Sex, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2024

Transforming Legal Sex, Noa Ben-Asher

Faculty Publications

Legal sex in the United States is undergoing a dramatic transformation. By "legal sex" this Article refers to various instances in which legal authorities engage in defining an individual's sex, either directly or indirectly. This Article begins by charting this transformation and then draws on this history to rethink the current political moment.

Until around the mid-twentieth century, legal sex was mostly understood as immutable sexual difference between males and females that is biologically determined prior to birth. Groundbreaking scientific and medical theories in the 1950s introduced gender identity as a new way to describe an internal sense of being …

Evaluation Of The Management Of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium Perenne Ssp. Multiflorum) Using Harvest Weed Seed Control At Winter Wheat Harvest In Kentucky, Hayden Love

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

With increasing herbicide resistant weed populations in Kentucky winter wheat, producers are looking for new weed control options for Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. ssp. multiflorum Lam.). A field study was conducted to better understand Italian ryegrass seed dispersal and the effectiveness of the Redekop seed control unit at winter wheat harvest in Kentucky. During harvest, the number of Italian ryegrass seeds shattering at the combine header, in the chaff, and contained in the grain tank was not significantly different. When the grain and chaff samples were combined, significantly more Italian ryegrass seed entered the combine. The integrated …

Understanding The Role Of Early-Stage Seed Development On Final Seed Weight By Linking Seed Physiology, Transcriptomics, And Environments In Soybean (Glycine Max (L.) Merr.), Ashwini Shivakumar

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Soybeans, which are widely grown in the United States, are used as food, animal feed, and industrial oil. The rise in plant-based diets highlights the high protein content and versatility of soybean. Understanding seed development is crucial for increasing yield. Soybean seed development includes three phases: lag, seed-filling, and maturation. Post-fertilization, the seed undergoes cell division in the lag phase, forming the embryo, endosperm, and seed coat. The embryo absorbs the endosperm and develops into two cotyledons. During the seed-filling phase, cotyledon cells accumulate starch, proteins, and lipids. During maturation, seeds dry out and become quiescent. Studies indicate that the …

Toxicological And Biomarker Assessment Of Freshwater Zebra Mussels (Dreissena Polymorpha) Exposed To Nano-Polystyrene, Andrew Reynolds, Enya Cody, Michelle Giltrap, Gordon Chambers

Articles

The presence of sub-micron-sized plastics in the environment has been increasing, with the possible risks of these particles remaining relatively unknown. In order to assess the toxicity of these particles, 100 nm diameter green fluorescent nano-polystyrene spheres (NPS) (20–60 mg/L) were exposed to zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) to investigate the mortality, clearance rate and stress-related biomarker responses. D. polymorpha were collected and analysed with standard OECD toxicological tests and biomarker analysis to detect both physical and biochemical responses after exposure to NPS. The toxicity of the NPS to D. polymorpha was low, with 60 mg/L NPS causing a mortality rate …

Nano-Pulse Treatment Overcomes The Immunosuppressive Tumor Microenvironment To Elicit In Situ Vaccination Protection Against Breast Cancer, Anthony Nanajian, Megan Scott, Niculina I. Burcus, Brittney L. Ruedlinger, Edwin A. Oshin, Stephen J. Beebe, Siqi Guo

Bioelectrics Publications

We previously reported that nano-pulse treatment (NPT), a pulsed power technology, resulted in 4T1-luc mammary tumor elimination and a strong in situ vaccination, thereby completely protecting tumor-free animals against a second live tumor challenge. The mechanism whereby NPT mounts effective antitumor immune responses in the 4T1 breast cancer predominantly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unanswered. In this study, orthotopic 4T1 mouse breast tumors were treated with NPT (100 ns, 50 kV/cm, 1000 pulses, 3 Hz). Blood, spleen, draining lymph nodes, and tumors were harvested at 4-h, 8-h, 1-day, 3-day, 7-day, and 3-month post-treatment intervals for the analysis of frequencies, death, …

Formation Rates Of Silver Metal Danoprisms As A Function Of Halide Concentration, Steven Akins Jan 2024

Formation Rates Of Silver Metal Danoprisms As A Function Of Halide Concentration, Steven Akins

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

anosystem morphology control is proving to be vital for developing nano technologies. This control allows for the optimization of a nanoparticle’s optical and electrical properties. One form of control is the addition of defects during nanocrystal formation. Nanoprisms are highly responsive to this form of control through halide concentration. However, the rate at which this control occurs has remained relatively unexplored. The formation kinetics of silver nanoprisms were monitored before, during, and after crystal formation as a function of halide concentration. The standard deviations between multiple replicates were found to be too large for this method to reach conclusions about …
