“Just Hold On, You Can Do This”: Conceptualizing Familial Support For First-Generation Undergraduate Students Of Color, Stephany Cuevas

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This study illustrates how parents, siblings, and extended family provide emotional, informative, instrumental, and appraisal supports to first-generation undergraduate students of color. Findings also suggest that families’ support is shaped by families’ understanding of the challenges first-generation college students face, their access to information about college and college life, and their consideration of students’ emerging adult developmental needs. Based on the experiences and perspectives of 12 family members, this study shows that families continue to be engaged in first-generation undergraduate students’ college education in essential ways, countering deficit perceptions of these populations, and providing new understandings of what family engagement …

On Willing Surrender As Virtuous Self-Constitution, Bennett B. Gilbert Jan 2024

On Willing Surrender As Virtuous Self-Constitution, Bennett B. Gilbert

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Our cultural situation is to seek a moral form of self-constitution, rather than an ontological or epistemological foundation. Such a moral ground lies in the paradox of willing surrender of the will to do wrong or dysfunctional acts in order to enter temporally-extended processes of moral change. But the paradox of willing surrender of the will requires analysis. The propositional form of it cannot be sustained and must instead give way to willingness as an ongoing choice. The self-reflexivity of the will with which we accomplish this turns out to be a core activity of human activity that seeks openness …

The Effects Of The Clinically Relevant Synthetic Progestin, 17-Α-Hydroxyprogesterone Caproate, On Neural Development And Behavior., Paige L. Graney

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The synthetic progestin, 17-α -hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17-OHPC) has beencommonly prescribed during gestation to reduce preterm delivery in individuals at risk (Meis et al., 2003). In singleton pregnancies, 17-OHPC treatment begins during the second trimester, around gestational weeks 16-20, and continues until the end of the third trimester, around week 37 (Berghella, 2012). Although the fetus is not directly administered 17-OHPC, previous research demonstrated that 17-OHPC was transferred from the maternal unit to the fetal unit of the placenta in situ, was detectable in maternal and fetal blood up to 44 days following the last injection (Caritis et al., 2012; Hemauer …

The Role Of Atmospheric And Oceanic Feedbacks In Orbital And Millennial Timescale Variability Of The Coupled Climate-Carbon System, Fangze Zhu Jan 2024

The Role Of Atmospheric And Oceanic Feedbacks In Orbital And Millennial Timescale Variability Of The Coupled Climate-Carbon System, Fangze Zhu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

An intriguing mechanism of the Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles is the phase locking of internal climate oscillations to external forcings, suggesting the leading role of the natural climate variability in the past climate changes on orbital timescales. Similarly, the millennial-scale variability over the last glacial period may be attributed to unforced climate dynamics. One of the central themes of the climate sciences is to acquire a fundamental understanding of climate feedbacks over a broad range of timescales. The main objective of this thesis is to identify the characteristic natural variability in a fully coupled climate-carbon model from orbital to millennial timescales, …

Intergenerational Ties, Sexual Orientation, And Health And Well-Being Of Sexual Minority Adult Children, Beenna Han

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The three studies in this doctoral dissertation explored overarching themes related to intergenerational relationships, health, and well-being of sexual minority adult children, using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). The studies have shared but distinctive focal points, including various dimensions of intergenerational relationships, specific subsets of data sources, and methodologies. The first study used two latent growth curve models to examine how intergenerational relationships between adult children and their older parents evolve over time, specifically focusing on the emotional closeness gap between sexual minority and heterosexual adult children. The results showed that sexual …

The Occult And Elizabeth I: How The Virgin Queen Used Magic As A Political Tool, Aiden Whitehead Jan 2024

The Occult And Elizabeth I: How The Virgin Queen Used Magic As A Political Tool, Aiden Whitehead

History Honors Program

On May 28, 1555, Dr. John Dee was arrested and taken to one of the most infamous prisons in British history: The Tower of London. He was arrested under suspicion of violating the Treasons Act of 1534, which outlawed predicting the death of the monarch, the consort, and any heirs. Why would an Oxford-educated, catholic man of the gentry possibly risk death in predicting the outcome of Queen Mary I’s pregnancy? Because Lady Elizabeth, the heir presumptive, hired him to do so.. This fourth month-long incident was Elizabeth I’s first forte into the realm of political magic, and it almost …

The Politics Of Naming A Field: Evolution, Controversies, And Strategies Around What We Call “Women’S Studies”, Sydney Lemire Jan 2024

The Politics Of Naming A Field: Evolution, Controversies, And Strategies Around What We Call “Women’S Studies”, Sydney Lemire

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies M.A. Final Projects

The name “Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies,” WGSS, is a name rooted in politics and the academy, evidenced by the evolution of the phrasing even in the field’s relatively short history. In an environment where WGSS is under attack from both neo-fascist policies and neo-liberal budget cuts, we must be certain to put our best, most representative foot forward. This project explores (1) the state of the field’s name today and how it has evolved, (2) why this nomenclature is unstable and contradictory, and (3) what the politics of naming reveal about the changes in the field, the challenges it …

We report year-round avian diversity and abundance at Cave Buttes, a site in the Sonoran Desert on the northern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. We conducted surveys on foot and by slowly driving a vehicle along little-used roads; we detected 109 species and a total of 10,078 individuals. Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), Gambel’s Quail (Callipepla gambelli), House Finch (Haemorphous mexicana), White- crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys), and White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatic) accounted for 55% of all individuals observed, and 10 species accounted for 67% of all individuals observed. Gambel’s Quail were significantly more abundant following 2 successive wet winters. Of …

Development Of Small Ligands Targeting Pathogenic Rna Repeats In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Zhihua Chang Jan 2024

Development Of Small Ligands Targeting Pathogenic Rna Repeats In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Zhihua Chang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Pathogenic microsatellite RNA expansions are toxic and can cause neuronal degeneration and dysfunction. Therapeutics that eliminate or neutralize these RNA repeats hold great promise for the treatment of many neurodegenerative diseases because they are uniformly fatal but there is no effective treatment available today. New compounds targeting these pathogenic RNA repeat sequences represent new hope to treat these diseases. The overall goal of my dissertation is to develop a high-throughput screening assay to identify small ligands as potential drug candidates against disease-associated RNA repeats and probe binding mechanisms to guide the design of optimized drug candidates, and eventually validate therapeutic …

Chemical Biology Approach To Study Rna Modifications, Ya Ying Zheng Jan 2024

Chemical Biology Approach To Study Rna Modifications, Ya Ying Zheng

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Nucleic acid modifications have gained compelling interest for their pivotal roles in cellular and biological processes. These modifications introduced a new layer of regulation without altering the original genetic sequence. In this burgeoning field of epitranscriptomics, many of the chemical modifications have emerged as potential biomarkers in therapeutic applications. Inosine is an essential post-transcriptional RNA modification that has functional roles in modulating the fate of all RNAs. The enzyme ADAR catalyzes the deamination of adenosine to inosine. This can also lead to change in the eukaryotic transcriptome due to A-G miscoding since inosine preferentially base pairs with cytosine. Moreover, hyper-editing …

Loss Of Courtship Suppression Memory In A Drosophila Melanogaster Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Eric Robles, Johannes Berlandi, Chris Ellis, Tianyi Wu, Astrid Jeibmann, Fang-Ju Lin

Biology

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent and lethal neurodegenerative disease. Memory loss and motor dysfunction are accompanied by pathological hallmarks like neurofibrillary tangles or amyloid plaques. In this study, courtship suppression assay was used to assess learning and memory of a transgenic Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly) line expressing human Amyloid beta 42 (Aβ42). At young age (4–6 days old), both parental control and AD flies displayed lower courtship indices during training after being rejected by previously mated females. However, in the subsequent testing phase, young AD flies showed compromised recall memory, unlike that of parental controls. Neither control …

Elucidation Of Mismatch Repair Regulation By Abl1: Advantages/Disadvantages Of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment, Hannah Daniels Jan 2024

Elucidation Of Mismatch Repair Regulation By Abl1: Advantages/Disadvantages Of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment, Hannah Daniels

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

DNA mismatch repair (MMR) is a critical repair process necessary for not only repairing mispairs incorporated into the DNA during replication, but also for inducing apoptosis in response to certain types of DNA damage. MMR is required for maintaining genomic integrity and due to the importance of this pathway, any impairment of its function can lead to increased mutation frequency, which is well known to be a driving force of cancer development, progression, and resistance. Despite extensive studies involving the proteins involved in the MMR pathway, the regulation of those proteins remains relatively unknown. Regulation of MLH1, a protein necessary …

Acquired Treatment Resistance In Prostate Cancer Via The Production Of Radiation Derived Extracellular Vesicles Containing Mitochondrial Proteins, Caitlin Miller Jan 2024

Acquired Treatment Resistance In Prostate Cancer Via The Production Of Radiation Derived Extracellular Vesicles Containing Mitochondrial Proteins, Caitlin Miller

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Radiation treatment (RT) is one of the most commonly administered treatments for prostate cancer (PCa) patients, yet the recurrence of tumors after RT remains one of the significant challenges in the eradication of PCa. In addition to induction of DNA damage, ROS production, and cell death, we found that RT promotes Extracellular vesicle (EV) production in PCa cells, at least in part, through H2O2 production (Miller CE et al., Antioxidants 2022, PMID 36358489). Since we observed EV production upon RT, EVs and their contents could play a role(s) in cancer survival after RT. By using flow cytometry …

Understanding The Mechanism Of Ferroptosis Susceptibility Variation In Colorectal Cancer, Aziza Alshahrani Jan 2024

Understanding The Mechanism Of Ferroptosis Susceptibility Variation In Colorectal Cancer, Aziza Alshahrani

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Despite the use of chemotherapeutic agents, CRCs remains to be difficult to cure at least partially due to their intrinsic and/or acquired resistance to cell death inducers. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death that caused by the accumulation of lipid peroxides. Studies have shown that dysregulation of ferroptotic pathways is associated with the development of resistance to various cancer treatment. Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is a known target for inducing ferroptosis due to its critical role in detoxifying lipid hydroperoxides, and ferroptosis suppressor protein (FSP1) also …

Porcupine’S Role In The Enhancement Of Enzalutamide Efficacy In Drug Resistant Prostate Cancer, Katelyn Jones Jan 2024

Porcupine’S Role In The Enhancement Of Enzalutamide Efficacy In Drug Resistant Prostate Cancer, Katelyn Jones

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Androgen receptor (AR) signaling continues to participate as a vital component of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Subsequently, this has led to the development of Androgen Signaling Inhibitors (ASI), specifically Enzalutamide (ENZ), which is a direct inhibitor of AR, to clinically manage CRPC. Inevitably, ENZ treatment only provides improvement for approximately two months before advancing to an incurable form, ENZ-resistant CRPC. With PCa ranking as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in USA males, there is an urgency and necessity for the discovery and development of novel therapeutic approaches for CRPC. Wnt signaling has been extensively documented in its involvement …

Therapeutic Approaches And Novel Mechansims In Cancer Progression, Kendall Simpson

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Prostate cancer (PCa) remains the most diagnosed cancer among men in the United States. There are various therapeutic routes that are implored to combat this fatal disease, and our work aims to increase the options made available to PCa patients. A combination treatment of Enzalutamide (Enz), an FDA approved drug for castration-resistant PCa patients, and Metformin, an FDA approved drug for type 2 diabetes, was utilized to enhance the efficacy of Enz in Enz-resistant PCa, both in vitro and in vivo. Thymic Lymphoma is one of the most common malignancies that can occur in various tissues and organs. Genomic stability …

Delineating Contributions Of Genotype And Lineage To Lung Cancer Therapy Response, Kassandra Jo Naughton Jan 2024

Delineating Contributions Of Genotype And Lineage To Lung Cancer Therapy Response, Kassandra Jo Naughton

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) heterogeneity is a major challenge for determining effective treatment strategies. Adenocarcinomas (ADCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are histologically and epigenetically distinct subtypes of NSCLC. Patients with ADC tumors harboring mutations in both KRAS and LKB1 (aka STK11) have lower survival rates than those with KRAS-only tumors. KRAS/LKB1 tumors are not only aggressive, but also respond poorly to immunotherapy. However, these data are limited to ADCs, and it is unclear if SCCs with this genotype are also resistant to immunotherapy. We developed a mouse model of Krasmut/Lkb1mut capable of producing …

Rps6kb1 Is A Critical Target For Overcoming Tumor Lineage Plasticity And Therapy Resistance, Saptadwipa Ganguly Jan 2024

Rps6kb1 Is A Critical Target For Overcoming Tumor Lineage Plasticity And Therapy Resistance, Saptadwipa Ganguly

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Most tumors initially respond to treatment, yet refractory clones subsequently develop owing to resistance mechanisms which can be classified as intrinsic or extrinsic resistance. The intrinsic resistance is usually present prior to any treatment whereas the extrinsic resistance develops as a result of exposure to some kind of therapy. In order to target these “therapy resistant” tumor cells an unbiased screen of an FDA-approved drug library against cancer cells was performed. This was followed by synthesis of chemical analogs of the most effective drug.

The studies led to the identification of a derivative of the antihistamine drug ebastine, designated Super-ebastine …

Digital (Re)Production: Spatial Mediations Through Augmented Reality Landscapes In ‘Pokemon Go’, Brigitte Pulminar Perkins

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

Since 2016, the mobile augmented reality game Pokémon GO has renewed interest within communities by mediating spatial engagement using in-game markers that must be engaged with throughout physical urban landscapes. This thesis identifies factors that influence the spatial distribution of digital markers used by this game to help inform analyses of urban gamification, urban spatial distribution, and cultural knowledge production processes. Drawing specifically on theories of urban spatialization and digital media studies, I highlight features of physical and digital legacies of redlining within Lexington, KY that are reproduced via Pokémon GO. I argue that the urban racialized landscape of Lexington …

Exploring Out-Of-Distribution Behaviors In Machine Learning Systems, Yutaro Yamada Jan 2024

Exploring Out-Of-Distribution Behaviors In Machine Learning Systems, Yutaro Yamada

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the evolving nature of model generalization in machine learning, with a particular focus on out-of-distribution behavior. It begins by examining how feature selection identifies and discards non-generalizable features, then explores the robustness of ImageNet-based models under shifted data distributions and their transfer to downstream tasks. The discussion moves to Vision-Language Models, exposing a "concept association bias'' that stems from contrastive training and exploring why autoregressive methods can offer stronger relational understanding. It then discuss how 3D-based pre-training mitigates spurious background-object correlations, improving generalization. Finally, it examines Large Language Models' spatial reasoning abilities, both in 2D and 3D, …

Neurobiological Markers Of Risk For Psychopathology In Healthy Youth At Familial Risk For Depression, Bailey Holt-Gosselin Jan 2024

Neurobiological Markers Of Risk For Psychopathology In Healthy Youth At Familial Risk For Depression, Bailey Holt-Gosselin

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Family history of depression is a robust predictor of early-onset depression (Elsayed, Fields et al. 2019, Ho, Shah et al. 2022) as well as other types of psychopathology (van Santvoort, Hosman et al. 2015, van Dijk, Murphy et al. 2021) among youth. Youth are at especially high risk when the family members with depression are their parents; youth whose parents have depression are at a 3- to 5-fold increased risk for developing depression themselves (Lieb, Isensee et al. 2002, Williamson, Birmaher et al. 2004). Prior work has indicated that risk may be conferred through alterations in neurodevelopment that precede the …
