Persistent Net Release Of Carbon Dioxide And Methane From An Alaskan Lowland Boreal Peatland Complex, Eugénie S. Euskirchen, Colin W. Edgar, Evan Kane, Mark P. Waldrop, Rebecca B. Neumann, Kristen L. Manies, Thomas A. Douglas, Catherine Dieleman, Miriam C. Jones, Merritt R. Turetsky

Michigan Tech Publications

Permafrost degradation in peatlands is altering vegetation and soil properties and impacting net carbon storage. We studied four adjacent sites in Alaska with varied permafrost regimes, including a black spruce forest on a peat plateau with permafrost, two collapse scar bogs of different ages formed following thermokarst, and a rich fen without permafrost. Measurements included year-round eddy covariance estimates of net carbon dioxide (CO2), mid-April to October methane (CH4) emissions, and environmental variables. From 2011 to 2022, annual rainfall was above the historical average, snow water equivalent increased, and snow-season duration shortened due to later snow return. Seasonally thawed active …

Efficacy Of Vitamin D Versus Biological Agents In The Management Of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Kayli Day Jan 2024

Efficacy Of Vitamin D Versus Biological Agents In The Management Of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Kayli Day

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease leading to joint destruction. There are several treatment options available to patients, including conventional disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS) and biological agents, but their efficacies vary per patient and have significant adverse effects and costs associated. There is, however, encouraging evidence to suggest the incorporation of vitamin D in treatment regimens may be a promising option for patients. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed and CINHAL databases, employing keywords and MeSH terms related to RA treatment options, with the goal to compare efficacy of biological agents and vitamin D in …

Psychology And The Legislative Future Of In Vitro Fertilization, Kerry L. Macintosh Jan 2024

Psychology And The Legislative Future Of In Vitro Fertilization, Kerry L. Macintosh

Faculty Publications

In LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine, P.C.,1 three couples that had undergone in vitro fertilization (hereinafter IVF) sued a fertility clinic and hospital after their stored embryos were lost in an accident.2 The plaintiffs included claims under Alabama’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act (hereinafter Act), which imposes liability for a wrongful act, omission, or negligence that causes the death of a “minor child.”3 The trial court dismissed the wrongful death claims, holding that the embryos were not children.4 The Alabama Supreme Court, however, reversed the dismissal, reasoning that the lost embryos qualified as unborn …

Arianism Revised: The Re-Emergence Of An Infamous Heresy, Mia K. Hardy Jan 2024

Arianism Revised: The Re-Emergence Of An Infamous Heresy, Mia K. Hardy

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Arian heresy, a Trinitarian heresy that suggests the members of the Trinity differ in essence, function, and rank, has existed in Christianity for centuries but hasn't often recaptured the mainstream discussion of orthodoxy. That is, until the 1970s. Since then, the available literature surrounding the subjects of complementarianism, eternal subordination, the Holy Trinity, and Arian philosophy has grown, and the overlap between these factors cumulated into what was arguably one of the most divisive theological debates within modern Evangelicalism. What factors contributed to the reemergence of this centuries-long debate in modern times? The overarching goal of this work is to …

Integral Human Development: Hurling Into The Soul, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2024

Integral Human Development: Hurling Into The Soul, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article offers a reflection on the relation between integral human development and integral ecology to create a lens for an incarnational spirituality of the soul. Grounded in and through God’s word and questions “hurling” into the soul, we are invited into the “play” of the Spirit, offering opportunities for memory, grace and hope to resound through the “seasons” of life and death. Through boldness, endurance and devotion to “the gospel of Christ” (1 Cor 9: 12), the hurling depths of the soul arises to witness to “become all things to all people” (1 Cor 9: 22). The article concludes …

The Black Lives Matter Movement: A Systemic Crisis That Expands Crisis Response Theory, Pam Richardson-Greenfield, Alyssa Reynolds, Ryan Cruz, Monique Bell Jan 2024

The Black Lives Matter Movement: A Systemic Crisis That Expands Crisis Response Theory, Pam Richardson-Greenfield, Alyssa Reynolds, Ryan Cruz, Monique Bell

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Relevance to Marketing Educators, Researchers, and/or Practitioners – In response to George Floyd’s death, a variety of organizations posted messages against racism and some began to openly support Black Lives Matter, often by name, in their corporate communication initiatives. With promises of financial commitments to uplift Black communities, calls for action, and initiatives to support internal change—large and small companies, non-profits and universities—could be perceived as courageous for establishing new protocols to support such a warranted change. However, in the era of “woke washing,” or inauthentic social justice messaging, the need to assess the authenticity of corporate statements of support …

The PR/HPA Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) site is located in Eastern Nebraska with the goal of improving resilience, sustainability, and profitability of agroecosystems through enhancing ecosystem services and environmental quality, developing strategies for efficient agricultural production, and mitigating and adapting to climate change. To meet this goal, a common experiment and five ancillary experiments have been developed to evaluate prevailing regional practices in grain crop production systems compared to alternative practices in rain-fed and irrigated systems. …

Design And Development Of A Robotic Articulating Laparoscopic Instrument, Francisco Emmanuel T. Munsayac Jr Iii Jan 2024

Design And Development Of A Robotic Articulating Laparoscopic Instrument, Francisco Emmanuel T. Munsayac Jr Iii

Biomedical, Manufacturing and Robotics Engineering Dissertations

Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, has revolutionized the field of surgery by replacing traditional open procedures with smaller incisions and reduced patient trauma. However, the current design of manual laparoscopic devices limits the range of motion for surgeons, restricting their maneuverability to only two degrees of freedom (DOF). This dissertation is a study aimed at addressing this limitation by designing and developing a robotic articulating laparoscopic instrument capable of providing 7-DOF movement.

The research aims to enhance surgical precision and dexterity by creating a tool that offers improved freedom of movement, allowing surgeons to navigate complex anatomical structures more …

Strategic Nutritional Interventions With Probiotics And Their Relationship To Performance, Feeding Behavior, And Reticulorumen Environment In Cows And Calves Under Subacute Ruminal Acidosis Risk, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves Jan 2024

Strategic Nutritional Interventions With Probiotics And Their Relationship To Performance, Feeding Behavior, And Reticulorumen Environment In Cows And Calves Under Subacute Ruminal Acidosis Risk, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a digestive disorder in ruminants characterized by extended periods of low reticulorumen pH. This digestive disorder is commonly observed in ruminants fed diets with elevated proportions of non-fibrous carbohydrates. This disorder has been vastly studied in adult dairy cattle and has been associated with losses in milk production, changes in feeding behavior, damage to the gastrointestinal tract, and premature culling. Although vastly studied in adult cattle, there is limited research on the effects of SARA in calves. SARA might be prevented by modifying the reticulorumen environment with probiotic supplements containing lactateutilizing bacteria such as Megasphaera …

Identifying Public Perceptions Towards Precision Dairy Technology Use, Brad Kelly Jan 2024

Identifying Public Perceptions Towards Precision Dairy Technology Use, Brad Kelly

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

To remain sustainable, the dairy industry must demonstrate commitment to addressing concerns from the public, such as sustainability and animal welfare. Precision dairy technologies (PDT) are a potential solution to ameliorate this issue, but public perceptions towards PDT are currently underinvestigated. This thesis aims to describe public perceptions towards PDT. Specifically, the objectives are to 1) describe baseline perceptions of the U.S. public towards PDT, 2) determine the effects of framing information about human-animal bond, data transparency, and animal welfare on PDT perceptions, and 3) evaluate how demographic characteristics mediate these perceptions. An online survey was used to measure baseline …

An Artificially Intelligent Approach To Medical Device Monitoring, Cristian A. Rodriguez Jan 2024

An Artificially Intelligent Approach To Medical Device Monitoring, Cristian A. Rodriguez

St. Thomas Law Review

The integration of artificial intelligence (Al) in medical devices, particularly the subset of Al technologies known as machine learning, has sparked a new era of precision and efficiency in healthcare. AI/ML-enabled medical devices are proving to be invaluable as they have already improved patient diagnosis, treatment, and disease prediction. As machine learning continues to be adopted in medical devices, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to receive more marketing submissions and pre-submissions for AI/ML-enabled medical devices, a trend that is expected to increase over time. While the FDA has made significant progress in proposing regulatory frameworks that will …

The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey Jan 2024

The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey

St. Thomas Law Review

For several years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have carried tension over which agency should regulate genetically modified livestock. Recently, this tension has boiled over with the release of many articles and statements from each organization as they battle over regulatory authority, most notably the USDA's claim that they are ready to take the bull by the horns and control the regulation of genetically engineered livestock. This note examines history and present-day practices to predict which agency will succeed in this battle of regulations, the USDA or the FDA.

Lessons From Rwanda: Why The U.K. Should Promote Reconciliation Through Localized Strategies In Place Of Prosecutorial Amnesty, Jeremy J. Perillo Jan 2024

Lessons From Rwanda: Why The U.K. Should Promote Reconciliation Through Localized Strategies In Place Of Prosecutorial Amnesty, Jeremy J. Perillo

St. Thomas Law Review

The United Kingdom ("U.K.") has a long, rich, and complicated history, but is likely better known contemporarily through its icons, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Big Ben, for example. Beyond that surface, formulated through its time as an expansive empire, is the complexity and controversy that comes with being the U.K., a prominent global hegemonic power throughout generations. One such complexity that has spanned centuries is the demarcation between Northern Ireland ("N.I.") and the Republic of Ireland. In early September 2023, the U.K.'s House of Commons ("Parliament") passed the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act ("the Act"), intending …

Meaningful Consumption, Aditya Gupta, Meike Eilert, James W. Gentry Jan 2024

Meaningful Consumption, Aditya Gupta, Meike Eilert, James W. Gentry

Faculty Publications – Marketing

While consumers frequently seek meaning through their marketplace interactions, a comprehensive understanding of meaningful consumption is conspicuously absent from marketing literature. Such insight would notably benefit macromarketing scholars who aim to evaluate the implications of consumer purchasing decisions on quality of life. Addressing this gap, our study employs 40 in-depth interviews to arrive at the phenomenological essence of meaningful consumption. We discover that meaningful consumption comprises three key themes—rejuvenation, expansion, and consolidation—accompanied by seven related sub-themes: repair and reconnection; intellectual, pragmatic, and relational expansion; and crystallization and contextualization. Our overarching framework enriches macromarketing theory by virtue of its ability to …

Banned Books & Banned Identities: Maintaining Secularism And The Ability To Read In Public Education For The Well-Being Of America's Youth, Megan M. Tylenda Jan 2024

Banned Books & Banned Identities: Maintaining Secularism And The Ability To Read In Public Education For The Well-Being Of America's Youth, Megan M. Tylenda

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

Books containing LGBTQ+ themes and characters are being removed from public school libraries at a rapid rate across the United States. While a book challenge has made it to the Supreme Court once before, the resulting singular plurality opinion left courts without a clear test to apply, ultimately leaving students’ First Amendment rights in the air. Additionally, the increasingly relaxed view of courts towards religious influence in public schools indicates that if a modern case were to reach the Supreme Court, religious challenges may be accepted, which would leave LGBTQ+ students who seek to see themselves represented in literature without …

Actin Depolymerization Of Tenocytes Promotes A Tendinosis-Like Gene Expression, Kameron Inguito, Ba, Valerie West, Karl Matthew Ebron, Justin Parreno, Phd Jan 2024

Actin Depolymerization Of Tenocytes Promotes A Tendinosis-Like Gene Expression, Kameron Inguito, Ba, Valerie West, Karl Matthew Ebron, Justin Parreno, Phd

Alpha Omega Alpha Research Symposium Posters

Optimal cellular mechanotransduction is essential for tendon matrix homeostasis. We recently developed an in vivo rat model of tendinosis, where the plantaris tendon are overloaded through ablation of the synergistic Achilles tendon. Using this model we determined that tissue overload disrupts matrix-cell interactions, which results in under-stimulation of tendon cells (tenocytes) (Fig.1)

Using an ex vivo model of tendon stress deprivation by maintaining tail tendon fascicles in floating culture we showed that tenocyte under-stimulation results in destabilization of filamentous (F-)actin (Fig.2). F-actin destabilization coincides with tendinosis-like gene expression: downregulation of tenogenic genes (Col1, Tnc, asma, Scx), upregulation of chondrogenic (Acan, …
